The Stash List

Fifth Edition

by Bret Sayre

No time to waste this week—instead we jump right into the list with the fervor and excitement of a Yasiel Puig bat flip. Yes, we’re going full Puig.

So without any further ado, here is The Stash List 5.0:

The Graduates: None

1) Gregory Polanco, OF, Pittsburgh Pirates (Previous Rank: 1)
At this point, Polanco’s Triple-A season is turning into Everybody Loves Raymond. It’s the same joke again and again and again, but instead of it being funny, it’s just sad and you wish it were over. This past week, Jaff Decker was promoted over Polanco. Yes, it was just to have a warm body for a few days, but that is a thing that happened.

2) Jurickson Profar, 2B, Texas Rangers (Previous Rank: 2)
Get back on the bandwagon now. It’s going to be full again before you know it.

3) Oscar Taveras, OF, St Louis Cardinals (Previous Rank: 3)
At this point, it doesn’t seem like there’s much that Jon Jay and Peter Bourjos can do to prevent Taveras from taking this job in another month or so. This is for the best.

I am in a keeper league with Stroman, Bauer, R. Montero, Heaney, Bryant, and Baez currently on my roster. I need have recently had a rash of injuries (LaRoche, Fernandez, Harper, Grilli, and J. Hamilton). With your stash list, do you rank them in order of impact for 2014 or "going forward value"? I am trying to determine who to cut to clear room for pick-ups. I'd also like to grab Thor at some point here soon. I am leaning towards cutting ties with Stroman.

Also, I am a little surprised Kris Bryant doesn't make your stash list. I understand that the plan is for him to be in the minors this season, but I could see him forcing his way into Iowa here soon, and a September call-up could be in order. Mike Olt's recent power surge aside, there isn't much blocking his way.

Thanks paulfrancke.

For others curious, here is what Sayre said about Bryant in the Stash List 4.0:

"Maybe August if you are super optimistic, but I'd be very surprised if he makes any sort of fantasy impact in 2014. The Cubs are still in the evaluation stage with some of their major league roster, including Olt--plus he's behind Baez and Alcantara for a promotion. On top of that, he needs more reps at 3B to see whether he can play the position at the major league level. The guy hasn't even played 100 pro games yet (including the AFL), let's all just take a breath."

Correct. This still holds true for me. Love him long-term though.

Why did Casey Kelley drop off the Honorable Mentions? Did he have a bad rehab start or other guys have better weeks/ look more promising?

It's tough when there are no graduations in a given week. A few names made jumps, Kelly did not. He'll be back as soon as this coming week (especially with Gausman and Montero looking like graduates).

No Alex Cobb yet?

I don't know what it is off the top of my head, but I believe there is a % ownership threshold for the list. Cobb falls above that threshold. Likewise, Bryce Harper won't be on this list when he (hopefully) returns in July as he is most likely still owned in just about all leagues.

The threshold is 25%.

Yes, listen to Mike. He's a smart dude. Cobb is owned in more than 85 percent of leagues out there, so putting him on a list like this provides no added value. He's great, we love him, he'll be back soon.

I don't think Cobb would qualify as a prospect.

I retract my statement. Looking at some of the names like Jamie Garcia, Jesse Crain, and Derek Holland -- this isn't just for prospects. Sorry.

Also, friends, #9 Kevin Gausman has graduated. He was just called up to start against the Tigers on Wednesday.

Does Trevor Bauer's recent blow-up push back his call-up? Does it change your opinion on him at all? I am having a tough time justifying keeping him owned. If he is called up mid-June, I think I'd rather just swap him out with Syndergaard. Thoughts?

Not at all (either way), and I would drop Bauer for Syndergaard in any format.

I have to drop one of the following before the end of the week, any suggestions? Gausman, Heaney, Stroman, Syndergaard, Pomeranz. I'm in a 15 team keeper points league, and I'm leaning towards Stroman.

I had a similar dilemma. I ended up dropping Stroman, for what it's worth. Miami's acquisition of Wolf could throw a slight wrench into Heaney's arrival time, I'd think.
