DateQuestionAnswer
2014-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)True of False: Marcus Stroman will have a better career than Kevin Gausman (was stronger in their first season statistically, without doubt).
(Ryan from Toronto)
Good one to start off with. Gausman has a bit more ceiling as his stuff is even louder, but given the big head start that Stroman has in the command department he's the safer bet. Stroman's stuff is plenty strong and he showed veteran command in his first go-round in the big leagues. As much as I like Gausman's potential, I can't pick against what Stroman already offers. (Todd Gold)
2014-11-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your expectations for Gausman this year?
(Gotribe31 from VA)
The Orioles have a good one in Kevin Gausman. The Orioles received a ton of flack for the yo-yoing of Gausman in 2014, but he responded well. He's evolved as a pitcher, and is learning to sequence better and not just be a flamethrower (which I watched him blow minor leaguers away with just his FB at Double-A). His split CH is a filthy offering and is difficult to pick up after seeing the mid to upper 80's FB off that big plane. The SL is still progressing, but it was a little more crisp at the end of the season. I expect big things from him moving forward, and he will be a big staple in their rotation for the future. (Tucker Blair)
2014-08-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)Roster advice: 10-team/12 keeper league, prepping for the playoffs, currently holding on to Michael Pineda (small sample, hope he's healthy), Taijuan Walker (fingers crossed for another Sunday start), Kevin Gausman (steady contribution), and Jake McGee (slew August) on the pitching staff....looking to add Dexter Fowler for depth at the plate (he'd be first off the bench)...Would you drop any of the pitchers for Fowler? PS: Staff FWIW: Greinke, Stras, Lester, Kluber, Archer, Rosenthal, Robertson, Jansen w/ Wacha on DL
(pmitchell60 from NOLA)
I would stock up on RB/WR first unless you can snag a top QB in rounds 2/3. Really depends on how teams and league scoring. Manning, Rodgers, Brees are head and shoulders above the pack while you can stock pile useful PPR WR/RB late. (CJ Wittmann)
2014-08-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Baltimore have an issue with developing good starting pitching? Brian Matusz, Zach Britton, and Tommy Hunter are all now in the bullpen. Jake Arrieta is excelling in Chicago. Should Kevin Gausman be hoping for a trade?
(Shawn from Cubicle)
Kevin Gausman will be just fine. I don't think their player development is the greatest but that also has to do with the players' makeup and willing to make adjustments and work. (CJ Wittmann)
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Kevin Gausman making the jump next year to at least being more reliable and getting more Ks?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Yes absolutely (Craig Goldstein)
2014-07-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the great work you do here, Doug. What are you seeing when you watch Chris Tillman and Kevin Gausman? What does each do well and what could improve?
(Matt from Austin)
Gausman has an insane change-up, and he can play off the change-fastball combination given his elite raw velocity, though his breaking stuff lags behind and will likely impede his chances of hitting K-related ceilings. There is great power in Gaus' delivery, and he has the upside for plus stability but is still a bit volatile as he continues to mature physically.

Tillman has an exceptionally tall arm slot, releasing the ball at heights of 6.75 feet or higher. His ultra-high release stems from a combination of physical height (he's 6'3"), a tendency to stay tall in the delivery (high center-of-gravity with minimal flex in the knees), and a spine-tilt that artificially raises his slot. The power grades out as average, and Tillman has room for improvement in the balance department, but downhill plane is not an issue.

On the jukebox: Pantera, "Cemetery Gates" (Doug Thorburn)
2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jake Odorizzi- is he primed for a big 2nd half? Would you rather have him over guys like Yordano Ventura, Marcus Stroman, Kevin Gausman, etc?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Not necessarily. He's already been on fire since May (3.14 ERA with 94 Ks in 77.3 IP). I think he will continue to be pretty solid (mid-to-high 3.00s) with an upside of just continuing what he's done the past two months (low-3.00s, major Ks) (Paul Sporer)
2014-07-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were the GM for a new team and had your pick of all Minor League pitchers for your Ace, who would it be?
(Robert Bob from Maine)
Have the Orioles sent Kevin Gausman back down to the minors for the 10th time this year yet? If so, I'll take him. Best combination of present talent, ceiling, health and major league readiness. (Jeff Moore)
2014-05-13 11:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin Gausman is being called up to start against the Tigers wed. Do you think he is here to stay?
(Rob from Baltimore)
I hope so. We are very high on Gausman. (Jason Parks)
2014-04-03 19:30:00 (link to chat)Martin Perez impressed me quite a bit with his last start, albeit against a less than impressive Phillies lineup. Do you think he can improve on his below average K-rate from last year?
(Stella from Kingham MS)
I do. His changeup is a true swing and miss pitch and sometimes breaking balls take time to develop - look at Julio Teheran and Kevin Gausman. He's still young, he was just good enough that he has to develop at the major league level. He's probably never an elite bat-misser but I love his fastball from the left side. I'm a fan. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Brett, First off, thanks for all the Fantasy stuff over the last 3 months - loved all of it, and the 'Resources' page is utter genius. It's turned BP into my 'go to' source in prepping for all my drafts. Anyway got a Prospect question for you - what impact, if any, do you expect Nick Kingham, Chi Chi Gonzalez and Kevin Gausman to have in the Majors this year? Cheers, Daff
(Daff38 from Sheffield, UK)
I'd be surprised if Kingham or Gonzalez see much more than emergency duty in the majors, but Gausman should hold down a role for the O's and if they're doing it right, it'll be one in the starting rotation. (Bret Sayre)
2014-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin Gausman, Carlos Martinez, Yardano Ventura . .. . . . any chance all 3 win a rotation spot in the spring? Who do you think is most to least likely?
(Saayyyy from Whaaaaatttt)
Very little chance all 3 do, IMO, especially C-Mart. Ventura has best bet, IMO. (Paul Sporer)
2014-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)I was surprised to see Kevin Gausman rated higher than Manny Machado on the O's list. Given Machado's defensive prowess, does this mean you don't see Machado's as a .300 hitter with 30+ bombs anymore? Thanks and great work!
(Frank from Williamsburg)
I love Machado. I didn't produce the individual U25 lists. I believe Chris Mellen ranked Gausman over Machado, a decision he said he wrestled with for a while. (Jason Parks on the Completed Prospect Rankings)
2014-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Looking at young prep and college prospects, how much can their mechanics change when experts state they have awful mechanics? Does this mean they will not develop into star players?
(Silverback38 from VA)
A ton of things can change, depending on the coachability of the player. Kevin Gausman has made huge changes from high school to college and now the pros, which speaks well to his ability to make adjustments. I was not the biggest fan of Big Fern's delivery in high school, but now it's one of the best in the game. But some players can never make the right adjustments, either because they lack the plasticity of muscle memory, they don't have proper coaching, they don't understand the instruction, they lack functional strength and/or flexibility, or they are just plain stubborn. (Doug Thorburn)
2014-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hype aside, is there really that much difference between Kevin Gausman and Tajuan Walker?
(Chad from Prospectville, USA)
Not a ton. Walker is an athletic freak and I love the way his arm works. Gausman has the better CH; Walker has the delicious CT; not sold on either of their breaking balls yet, but they will find a way to make them work. Both are frontline arms. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2014-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on MLB.com's ranking of Kevin Gausman at 31? Do you think it has to do with his struggles last year at the pro level?
(Rob from Baltimore)
I assume. He has work to do, and his exposure to the major league level showed that, especially when it comes to FB command and breaking ball utility. But the profile is still a frontline starter, and its not like he's a veteran carving up the upper minors; he's still very young and needs more refinement. He's going to be very good. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2014-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you expect to make more of an impact for their team this season; Taijuan Walker or Kevin Gausman?
(Lance Rinker from Dallas, TX)
Both pitchers are going to impact their team, but I'll pick Walker. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Despite the inherent costs of starting the arbitration clock earlier, shouldn't the immediate success of top NL fireballing pitching prospects last year like Gerrit Cole, Jose Fernandez, Shelby Miller, Michael Wacha and even lower ceiling guys like Tony Cingrani and Alex Wood made it more likely that Archie Bradley, Noah Syndergaard and maybe even guys like Matt Wisler and James Taillon come up to help their clubs as early as possible?
(Scott from LA)
Maybe, but remember everyone's developmental cycles are different. Kevin Gausman seemed like a good bet to succeed right out of the gates, instead he allowed more hits than innings pitched. So it's really a case-by-case thing.

Plus, with the exception of Jose Fernandez, all those pitchers were on quality teams. If I'm the Mets I'm not eager to cost myself more money later on for two months of a guy who, let's face it, isn't the difference between the postseason and the golf course. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-02-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Sam, I saw an interview Kevin Gausman gave before the draft and he sounded like a 5 year old and immediately downgraded him and took Kyle Zimmer in my draft. Do you have any thoughts on his maturity level ?
(AL from Amarillo, TX)
I don't, but I will say this, which is extremely, extremely important in assessing players: Makeup and character are not the same thing. They're not even necessarily correlated, though they might be. Makeup, as it is usually used, and as it might be useful to somebody assessing these guys, generally means: The mental drive to make himself better; the steadiness to perform well in any situation, not just comfortable ones; and whatever characteristics might make those around him better. Character is totally different. Lots of guys you'd hate IRL who would grade out as having good makeup, for baseball purposes.

The problem is, you have a decent insight into people's character by seeing how they act in public, the words they use when they speak, etc. The makeup stuff isn't generally readily apparent to us.

So, yeah, I wouldn't make any decisions about players based on their interviews. Notably, I didn't draft Miguel Cabrera anywhere before 2012 because of his DUI/rehab. See? (Sam Miller)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Welcome Ben, I'll start you off with a curveball: Let's say every draft eligible prospect from 2010 to 2014 was eligible for this year's draft. Just based on pre-draft scouting reports and without the benefit of hindsight, how would the first 10 picks of the draft unfold?
(baseballjunkie from cali, where it's already Spring)
This is an amazingly difficult question to answer, and also quite fun. Itís probably better suited for an article than for a fantasy chat answer, but since I was able to access this question ahead of time, hereís what I came up with after about 30 min of research. Iíll note that since Iím not familiar enough with 2014 prospects yet, Iíve restricted your search to 2010-2013 draftees. Iíll go with:

1. Bryce Harper 2. Manny Machado 3. Gerrit Cole 4. Dylan Bundy 5. Anthony Rendon 6. Jameson Taillon 7. Bubba Starling
8. Byron Buxton 9. Carlos Correa 10. Archie Bradley

Toughest omissions for me were Francisco Lindor, Trevor Bauer, Kevin Gausman, Kris Bryant and Mark Appel. If Luc Giolito had been healthy for his senior year, heíd probably have made it on this list. Obviously thatís not how weíd rank them now, and itís funny that guys like Chris Sale, Jose Fernandez, Matt Harvey and Javier Baez are left in the dust. Bubba Starling sticks out like a sore thumb, and Buxton was underrated. This exercise also reinforces how loaded the 2011 draft was. Last yearís pales in comparison. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mike, Ray here. AL-only keeper league. How many SP do you toss back out of these: Ubaldo ($5-assuming he stays in AL), Kluber ($5), Lackey ($10), Straily ($8) or Gausman ($10). League is high inflation on ace SPs and top hitters.
(sbnbaseball from NJ)
Hey Ray

Of those pitchers you'd ideally like to keep all of them at those prices but Cory Kluber and Kevin Gausman are the guys I'd throw back of that group if you HAVE to throw someone back. I think you hang onto Gausman if you're in a long-term keeper though. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-17 10:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think you are overrated Kevin Gausman? MLB.com don't think he is Top 10 RH pitchers in the minors.
(gotwins0912 from Taichung city)
He's clearly one of the top right-handers in the minors. I will assume they didn't rank him because of major league service time or something in that realm because you absolutely can't justify excluding him based on the scouting. (Jason Parks)
2014-01-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What does Kevin Gausman have to do this year to get back to the possible ace projection he once had?
(Rob from Baltimore)
I think most prospect mavens still see that kind of long-term projection. Those overreacting to his small sample last year will lose out. Keep the faith as a fan for sure, but don't go crazy as a fantasy owner because it might still be more 2015 than 2014 (Paul Sporer)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your expectations for Kevin Gausman this year?
(Ryan from Richmond)
I think he ends up a bit up and down - both in terms of performance and how the team treats him. I'm still buying long term though (Craig Goldstein)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Are you a fan of Kevin Gausman: for 2014? long-term?
(Sara from Tacoma)
Hi Sara:

I'm not particularly enamored with Gausman in 2014 but I do like him long term. He strikes me as a pitcher who will struggle this year but will eventually put it together and be a solid #2 or #3 down the road. I'm just not sure if that "down the road" will be in 2015, 2016, or later. (Mike Gianella)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Kevin Gausman? In the closing months it seemed like he started to get things figured out. Will he be the next breakout star as a starting pitcher?
(Eli from Maryland)
I think he could be a legit #2 starter, and some see a future #1. He often throws too many strikes--so the overall command needs to improve. With multiple changeup looks and a developmental slider, the secondary arsenal will stand out if the FB command improves. He could be very, very good and very, very soon. I would take him over Bundy and I really like Bundy. (Jason Parks)
2013-12-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)First three things that come to mind about Kevin Gausman?
(Ben from Baltimore)
1) Change-up is unfair.
2) Elite velocity, but batters can square
3) Excellent ability to make mechanical adjustments (Doug Thorburn)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Per the mid-season Top 50, the top 10 Starting Pitching propects in baseball (that are still prospect eligible) were: Archie Bradley, Kevin Gausman, Taijuan Walker, Jameson Taillon, Dylan Bundy, Mark Appel, Robert Stephenson, Carlos Martinez, Noah Syndergaard, and Aaron Sanchez. What would an updated list look like? I assume Jonathan Gray would be somewhere in the middle of the pack, no?
(Jonah from Redwood)
I think there are some slight differences that you'd see here. Globally speaking, I think everyone recognizes that Noah Syndergaard has vaulted himself higher up a list of this nature. Speaking personally, I have always been on the lower end with my Dylan Bundy projections and I would push him down the list some. Gray would be in the mix toward the back of this pack for me, and that's not a slight against him, I just don't believe he is quite on par with some of the other names in this group. (Mark Anderson)
2013-09-12 18:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Mike, I have a chance to take a flyer on Mas Tanaka now. Or would it be better to pick up Gausman?
(Cal Guy from Cali)
I'd probably take the shot with Masahiro Tanaka if you can acquire him now. Kevin Gausman's ceiling is great, but Tanaka is more polished and odds are good he winds up in a better ballpark than Gausman's Camden Yards. It's a risk to be sure, but so are most rookie/young pitchers. Sure, take the gamble on Tanaka, why not? (Mike Gianella)
2013-09-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)If I deal a pair of top prospects (e.g. Two from among Jameson Taillon, Carlos Martinez, and Kevin Gausman (let's say the first two)) what should my expected return be in dynasty (super deep rosters/size)?
(Donnie from Atlanta Renegadin')
If you find the right team who is in the building process, you should be able to a pretty nice bat for those two, right? Choo might be too high, but maybe Gordon or Dom Brown? (Paul Sporer)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are you higher, same, or lower on Kevin Gausman now, than at the start of the year?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
About the same (which is high). (Jason Cole)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Rank if you will according to ceiling (high to low): Kevin Gausman, Carlos Martinez, Jameson Taillon.
(Jonah from Redwood)
Hmm...Gausman, Martinez, Taillon. (Jason Cole)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Many talk about the Mariners lack of ability to develop their hitting prospects but couldn't you say the same about the Orioles on the pitching side? Jake Arrieta, Brian Matusz, Zach Britton along with the struggles of Kevin Gausman (SSS I know) and the injury to Dylan Bundy. Should the O's be mentioned in the same breath in regards to their lack of development skills on the mound?
(Roger Dorn from San Mateo)
I don't know if I'm ready to say that the O's do not know how to develop pitching just yet. However, I will admit a lot of their pitching prospects have had different prospect paths than I would have predicted. . (Zach Mortimer)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank in order of ceiling: Carlos Martinez, Kevin Gausman, Jameson Taillon, Robert Stephenson, Noah Syndergaard, Lucas Giolito.
(AJ from Phoenix)
On ceiling alone: Gausman, Giolito, Taillon, Syndergaard, Martinez, Stephenson. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin Gausman or Kyle Zimmer, who has the better carer?
(Jonah from Redwood,CA)
Gausman. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Rest of year: Edwin Jackson, David Phelps, Erasmo Ramirez, Kevin Gausman, Dan Haren.
(LoyalRoyal from KS)
EJax, Eraser, Phelps, Haren, and Gausman. So sad about Haren's demise. (Paul Sporer)
2013-05-29 18:30:00 (link to chat)In a FAAB league, how aggressive should I be for Wacha? Ceiling higher or lower than Gausman?
(Rick J from Boston)
Hey Rick:

In a mixed league, you probably don't want to be too aggressive with Michael Wacha. Pitchers pop up on the wire quite a bit as teams lose patience and give up on guys off to slow starts. If you're talking a $100 budget, I'd say $15-20, max. Kevin Gausman has a higher ceiling than Wacha. Wacha seems more like a potential #2-3 to me while Gausman is a potential ace.

Something else I'd point out about Wacha is that his K rate at AAA is below six per nine innings. This won't have an impact on his future performance but for me is a red flag in terms of his odds for short-term success. (Mike Gianella)
2013-05-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)A question that will probably be debated for years, but who do you prefer between Kevin Gausman and Kyle Zimmer? Why?
(D. Loria from Last Place)
A great question. I preferred Zimmer on draft day due to his superior delivery - excellent momentum combined with great balance and stability throughout the delivery, a combination that is rarely seen at the amateur level. I actually liked Gausman's delivery better in high school than with LSU, as he was stiff with his delivery in college and finished with vicious spine tilt. But I was stunned by Gausman's improvements this spring, as he had addressed all of the issues in minimal time. Gausman has the higher ceiling, and now that I have seen such rapid development patterns, he gets my vote for the superior prospect. Gausman could be special. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)With Bundy being injured, do you see the Orioles pulling Kevin Gausman up to put an end to the rotating 5th starter issue by end of May or June? Thanks...
(LoyalRoyal from Kansas)
I don't know if Baltimore will be that aggressive with Gausman but it wouldn't surprise me if he's up later in the year. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Zach Britton: temporary setback, or permanent bummer? Also, will the O's trade some of that pitching depth?
(Pluto from (WI))
I assume we're talking about the one bad start, so I'd certainly say temporary setback. But I'm not convinced there was all that much there to begin with, so it's not like it's a setback from All-Star.

Also, it's going to be tough to trade the pitching depth because so rarely have they all be at relative peaks at the same time. Maybe when Kevin Gausman and Dylan Bundy arrive then you start making trades by necessity because you start having guys out of options, but it's hard to trade a Tillman when he's peaking when you don't trust a lot of the other guys yet. (Zachary Levine)
2013-03-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty league trade, my lineup: Arencibia, Frazier(1b), Espinosa(2b), Miggy(3b), Rutledge(SS), Cuddyer(OF), Melky(OF), Marte(OF), De Aza(OF), Moustakas(DH), Samardzija(SP), Lester(SP), Morrow(SP), Volquez(SP), Bauer(SP). I am looking to acquire a #1SP and this trade has been proposed to me: Felix Hernandez, Wil Myers and Billy Hamilton. Should I stand pat??? I also have Profar, Olt, Taveras and Zunino along with Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman, Chris Archer and Kyle Zimmer waiting on the bench. Pull the trigger....I an torn.
(MerleDixon from Fantasy prison)
So you give those two for Felix? It's completely fair and fits your desires for a #1. Try to give one of the SP prospects instead of Hamilton, but if s/he says no, then I'd do the proposed deal. (Paul Sporer)
2013-03-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Enjoying SP Guide--great material. 5x5 ten team dynasty: 15 keeper and 10 minors. Spent couple years prospecting: who are the gold nuggets and who are the fool's gold? Jose Fernandez, Jameson Taillon, Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman, Kyle Zimmer, Max Fried, Lucas Giolito. Thank you
(nictaclacta from phoenix)
You've got lots of potential gold. If I **knew** who was fool's gold out of that, I'd have a much different job. I can tell you who I love from that group and it's Fernandez. I've always been a Taillon guy. Very excited to see full seasons out of Gausman and Zimmer. Btw, no mention of Bundy isn't because of any dislike, but rather bc he speaks for himself. He looks like a future star. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)You have Kevin Gausman ranked higher than any other list I've seen. What do you like so much about him?
(Joelskil from Haifa)
His smile and his calm approach to friendship. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)The Professor predicts a 2013 debut for Kevin Gausman. That would be a really fast trip through the minors. I have the #1,2 and 5 pick in our minor league 20 team dynasty draft. Is Gausman worthy of the #5 pick (or higher)?
(Grubby from Possumjaw, AR)
Who am I to question him? :) Gausman has the collegiate experience so the quick trip up isn't surprising and I'd definitely take him with one of those picks depending on who is out there. (Jason Collette)
2013-02-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kyle Zimmer or Kevin Gausman in a dynasty league?
(Jake from Chicago)
I prefer Kevin Gausman, echoing our prospect team's opinion from the top 101 list, where Gausman ranked 13th and Zimmer 41st. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)For you, who is the better prospect between Kyle Zimmer and Kevin Gausman and what for you separates them?
(Paul from Bored at Work)
Give me Gausman. I think the stuff is a little better. (Jason Parks)
2013-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mr.Levine,can you put thes guys in order??Jose Fernandez...Salvador Perez...Albert Almora..Jorge Solar...Kyle Zimmer...Noah Syndergaaud...Allen Webster...Alen Hanson...Gregory Palanco..Aaron Sanchez...Andrew Heaney...Kevin Gausman..Addison Russell....Kyle Crick...Sean Manaea...Clint Frazier...Ryne Stanek... Thanks John
(John from Boston)
I sort of feel like this is a riddle to see if I can figure out what this list even is. What is this list? I'll go with Salvador (Sal(vy)) Perez and then the rest just for the present. (Zachary Levine)
2013-01-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who's the better pitcher in 5 years: Max Fried or Kevin Gausman?
(Jon from Kentucky)
What's up, Jon?

Everything I've read about Fried is very impressive, but Gausman is probably the safer choice as a college draftee. Again, this is just going off of what I've read; that might be a fun debate for our prospect team. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey R.J.,can you put these guys in order,Jose Fernandez,Almora,Solar,Zimmer,Syndergaurd,Hedges,Allen Webster,Aaron Sanchez,Alen Hanson,Sean Manrea,Clint Frazier and Kevin Gausman...thanks for all the hard work!!!
(John from Boston)
John, I don't think I know enough about these players to give you a useful answer. I will say that I like Webster and Hanson quite a bit. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your assessment of Kevin Gausman, Max Fried, and Kyle Zimmer? Who has the most upside? Thanks.
(Jacob from San Diego)
Jacob, I haven't seen any of the pitchers in person so I'm going off second-hand info here. I've heard a ton of good things about Fried, but it wouldn't surprise me if, in five years, either Zimmer or Gausman is viewed as the best pitcher of the trio. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-12-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)What is your assessment of Kevin Gausman?
(Frank from Denver)
I covered Gausman as part of my draft coverage - He is awesome, but I am admittedly lower on him than most, due to some undesirable mechanical indicators which I think will be speed bumps in his development. He has a huge ceiling, with the raw tools to be elite, and the Orioles may want to exercise patience in his development despite the expectations that he will move quickly. Pitching mechanics are typically addressed in the minors, and Gausman could develop some bad habits if they bring him up too quickly.

2013-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Happy New Year! In trying to access Diamond Scape Scouting, I'm running into a lot of 404 error pages. FYI. Anyway can you give the OFP grades you gave to Stephen Strasburg, Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon, Kevin Gausman, Dylan Bundy, Taijuan Walker, and Jose Fernandez? Thanks!
(AJ from Phoenix)
Hi AJ! Yes, DSS was taken off line when I decided to take the scouting services to private clients. The plan is still to bring it back online with a portion of the draft stuff available to readers (though Baseball Prospectus will really be where the writing is done). Here are the OFP rankings assigned to these players by DSS -- as a word of warning, this will help you see how I comparatively viewed the players at draft time, but the scale shouldn't really be projected against what Jason and the prospect team has doing with the Prospect Lists:
Strasburg - 64/67
Cole - 62/63
Gausman - 59/62
Bundy - 58/62
Taillon - 57/61
Fernandez - 55/57
Walker - 52/56 (Nick Faleris)
2013-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Tell us why you love Kevin Gausman so much.
(Michael Williams from Harrisburg PA)
I could write a LOT about my love for Kevin Gausman. I saw him throw a very strong game against Arkansas last spring at Alex Box stadium (was is an incredible experience I strongly encourage every baseball fan to fit onto their bucket list. Well, the game part -- you can't see Gausman throw there anymore, obviously.

Gausman has size, showed a good amount of improvement in both his mechanics and stuff in just two years with Coach Mainieri and staff, a big arsenal, and has maintained his stuff deep in games and into the summer with Team USA. He creates tough angles, gets downhill, has an even demeanor on the mound and knows how to attack hitters. He has some kinks to work out, but is a potential beast in the making. Additionally, everyone from the Athletic Director down to the ushers in the lower box seats to a guy on the food service staff did nothing but sing Gausman's praises as a player and as a man. He's a guy to watch and a guy to root for. (Nick Faleris)
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm hearing a lot of good things about Kevin Gausman, What's his ceiling?
(Sara from Tacoma)
Hi Sara, good to hear from you. I'm afraid I don't know much about Gausman at this point. Doug Thorburn, BP's pitching mechanics expert, had nice things to say about him in June, concluding with "He has the potential for an incredible delivery, with a projectable frame and a mechanical history to fuel optimism that he can make the adjustments necessary to ascend to elite levels." I encourage you to read the entire article if you haven't already: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=17293 (Geoff Young)
2012-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which of the top arms in last year's draft do you feel will experience the most success at the big league level? Max Fried, Kevin Gausman, or Kyle Zimmer? Thanks for the chat!
(Bill from San Diego)
Bill, nobody can know! There is no value added in my opinion. I am sorry to give such a lousy answer to this question, but there is absolutely no information that is publicly available that could ever answer this question in a satisfactory way, and even the very smartest people can't predict much. Brandon Beachy wasn't drafted. (Sam Miller)
