2014-09-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Derek Holland has been pretty awesome since returning. Is this just SSS or will he be a nice value in 2015?
(Leo from NYC)
This is real. I really like him as an undervalued asset in 2015. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat)Is Justin Upton, Lance Lynn, and Derek Holland a reasonable price for Chris Sale, Joey Gallo, Kenley Jansen, and a top 5-10 prospect pick (assume 2014 draftees)?
(AJ from Phoenix)
I value Sale over Upton by enough to want more in this deal if I'm the Sale side. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Derek Holland? Chance to contribute this year and down the line?
(Max from NYC)
I like that it's not an arm injury. I could definitely see him contributing. I'd scoop him in just about any format where I had a DL spot available (Paul Sporer)
2014-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Paul, I would think Derek Holland would be a fantastic add considering he will be fresh. What say you?
(Rup from Lorton, VA)
Really depends on league. You can flip it and say he'll be rusty, too. Definitely a viable add in a lot of formats because there is some nice potential, but he's far from a sure thing to be a big second half contributor (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Gentlemen, if my team is short on relievers, but probably has enough innings in total - thanks to drafting enough starters, even if two of them are Doug Fister and Derek Holland, would you prioritize drafting relievers in the first supplemental over more starters?
(R.A. Wagman from GTA)
Having elite relievers is great for a contending team at the front of their bullpen, so if you can afford using your picks and there are strong relievers available, we feel good about that strategy. (Scoresheet Chat with Ben, Jared, and Ian)
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Henry Ownens' volatility -- sounds a lot like Derek Holland.
(natedogg34 from Fort Worth)
For different reasons - Owens is tied to his height which makes it hard to repeat his delivery while Holland struggles because...actually I don't know why Holland struggles sometimes. He should be better than he is. Anyway, the frustration level among fans could be similar. I see where you're going with this NateDogg. Way to regulate. (Jeff Moore)
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Bret, are you still optimistic about Ike Davis? I may have the chance to get him and Derek Holland for Marlon Byrd and Alex Guerrero. Not sure how much hope to have for Ike. Thoughts?
(Chris from Dallas)
Yes I am. And that's definitely a deal I would make. (Bret Sayre)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Would you stash Holland in a dynasty league or cut bait as he might not be useful at all in 2014
(Shawnykid23 from Snowy CT)
He is most certainly rosterable. It's not an injury that should have a long term impact and Derek Holland could put up 60-80 really useful innings in 2014. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is it worth stashing Derek Holland for what he may provide when he returns?
(ChoppertoChipper from St. Albert)
Yeah. He's looking at half a season and a lower-body injury, so I could definitely see him doing some good things in the summer and down the stretch. Don't overpay for injured guys, though. (Paul Sporer)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)I was needling a friend of mine about Matt Moore that at this point he is essentially Derek Holland only a little younger. I am sure most everyone will say that Moore is better now and long term but can you see any basis in truth to my comparison?
(chris from Phoenix)
Holland has actually shown considerably more control over the last few years. I'm not sure the comparison works, but that doesn't mean Holland isn't better. It's all about whether you believe that Moore can put it together, because the pure stuff is better. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Which lefty would you rather have for this year, and the future: Derek Holland or Matt Moore?
(kevin from oakland)
Hi Kevin:

Definitely Matt Moore. He has some control issues, but if he can harness those to even some degree he is an ace starter in the making. Derek Holland is very good, but I see him more as a solid #2 going forward, not an ace. If you're talking fantasy, Moore is an even better option because all of those strikeouts can win you a category. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)In my AL-only Dynasty Lg, I acquired Mike Moustakas, Addison Reed, Byron Buxton and the 6th overall pick for Justin Verlander & my 10th, 11th and 12th round picks. Was this a good pick-up, considering that I have Matt Moore, Yu Darvish, Derek Holland and Tommy Milone as my top starters
(jlarsen from Chicago)
Hard to say considering I don't know what those picks would typically fetch in your league. That seems like a lot to give up since it's an AL-only. Your staff looks deep, but this isn't a mixed. I do like Buxton a lot, but I don't like the idea of giving up Verlander without getting a top hitter back. I have been burned in the past dealing an ace pitcher for a package of players rather than one big hitter in return. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Give us a little preview of the SP Guide...How about 1 breakout SP in each league??
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Some might see Samardzija's 2012 as a breakout, but I think that was merely a taster. I've been on the Derek Holland train for a while, but I still believe. Lefties take a bit longer and the talent remains plentiful. (Paul Sporer)
2012-01-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Did Derek Holland finally figure it all out? Does he have any room to improve from last year's performance? If he does, along what kind of stats he would offer in his prime?
(Jay from Vancouver)
Obviously, Holland figured out a few things in 2011. The good news is that he still has more to figure out, as the changeup can certainly improve. I don't like projecting stats because I'm not very good at it, but I think Holland can be the type of #3 starter that can throw one-hitters when he is on and give up five runs in five innings when he is not. Consistency could make him a #2. (Jason Parks)
2012-01-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who grades out better for the combined hair & mustache package: Tim Lincecum or Derek Holland?
(Bryant from San Diego)
Lincecum grades out higher. Holland looks like a NAMBLA alert come to life. (Jason Parks)
2011-10-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Going forward, pick one: Matt Harrison or Derek Holland?
(Or from DENTON!!)
Tough call. I'll go with Harrison. He's reading books now. The future is his. (Jason Parks)
2011-06-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have a very strong pitching staff in a long term keeper Strat-O-Matic 16 team league and I only need five starters. Which five of these would you keep? Josh Beckett, Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Zack Greinke, CJ Wilson, Jordan Zimmermann, Clayton Kershaw, Derek Holland, Alexi Ogando, and Chris Narveson. Keep in mind I can keep them forever.
(jhardman from Apex, NC)
Lincecum, Kershaw, Greinke, and Cain seem like obvious choices. I'd probably go with Beckett for the last spot, though Wilson might be safer, given Beckett's age and injury history. (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-03-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who closes if Feliz starts?
(johnklein from northeast)
I'm convinced they'd make a trade of some sort to add a right-handed veteran, because I guess I'm more than a little doubtful they'd go old (Arthur Rhodes or Darren Oliver) or young (Derek Holland) from what's effectively a list made up of lefties, at least as far as their best internal options. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Derek Holland looked great in the LCS. Has he secured a starting spot in 2011, and if so, does he have David Price upside?
(maxfawcett from Edmonton, AB)
You'd think so, and while that's a very high standard to set, Holland has tremendous upside. And if they ever tire of using Feliz as a reliever, you could see a Ranger rotation every bit as easily associated with youth and greatness as Price and his compadres. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-06-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)12 team 5x5 single season, I have two DL slots, currently occupied by Derek Holland and Michael Gonzalez. Should I replace either with Orlando Hudson, cut Hudson, or cut Nate McLouth or Chipper Jones from my bench. Also, have you played God of War III, and if so were you put off at all by how violent some of the game was?
(Bill N from Buffalo)
God of War's combat bores me. I don't mind the violence, but that's really the selling point for it IMO. I'm also someone whose favorite part of Gears of War is sneaking up on a baddie with a chainsaw bayonet, so I might not be the best person to ask about that.

It might be time to cut Nate McLouth--it's not like anyone is going to snag him off of waivers if he starts to hit, because his current line is so awful that he won't show up on anyone's radar unless they are beyond desperate. (Marc Normandin)
2010-04-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)When will the Rangers begin to admit their mistake and promote Derek Holland to replace Rich Harden in the rotation? Harden is a bullpen killer with his 4.1 inning outings.
(Kevin from Dallas)
Both Holland and Brandon McCarthy are carving up the PCL, giving Texas some options to change up the rotation. Harden (17 ip in 4 starts) and Feldman (7.50ish r/g) are the subpar candidates to date. Harden's history and stuff make him a strong candidate for the Kerry Wood treatment and a permanent shift to the bullpen. I doubt they would make such a move without a DL trip for Harden, , which would be the excuse for the transition. Shouldn't have to wait too long for that. (Clay Davenport)
2010-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Follow up, Wilson - "he's a lefty who can miss bats." Sounds a lot like Derek Holland, another rotation candidate they passed on...
(Jake from Chicago)
Yes, but Wilson's 29 and has had success at the major league level. Holland is 23 and was beaten like a rented mule last year (6.12 ERA). The Rangers are contenders, and it may make more sense for Holland to hone his skills at Triple-A (where he has just four innings of experience) or in the bullpen. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Which young dynamic duo would you choose for your team long term? Neftali Feliz and Derek Holland or Chris Tillman and Brian Matusz?
(Chad from Arlington)
Feliz/Holland, I think. The combined upside is higher. (Tommy Bennett)
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)What were your impressions of Derek Holland's rookie year?
(Trevor from Fort Worth, TX)
Uneven and very promising, but I guess I'm the sort of optimist who believes that if you hand Mike Maddux great raw material, you're going to get results. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-10-05 16:00:00 (link to chat)Eric, where do you see Derek Holland in six months - bullpen or back of the rotation?
(CJ from SF)
Rotation. The Rangers wanted to bring their young guns like Holland and Feliz up and start them out in the bullpen. Make no mistake, both are going to be starting pitchers. (Eric Seidman)
2009-09-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)If the Rangers bring back their current team, with minimal to no free agent additions, do you see them likely performing worse, the same or better next season?
(ScotMartin from TX)
Well, I certainly think Derek Holland will improve given the tantalizing glimpses we've seen of him, and the addition of Neftali Feliz to the rotation will be a big deal, too. I'm less optimistic about the low strikeout rate guys repeating their success - Millwood, Hunter and Feldman - because if anything should go wrong (such as losing a tick of velocity to fatigue) they won't be nearly so effective.

I also think that the limitations of their low-OBP offense are glaringly apparent. They desperately need to find guys who can get on base to take advantage of the power bats they have in that lineup. They've got one regular above .340. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-09-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)How has Derek Holland's MLB debut changed your opinion on him? What should Rangers fans expect from him next season?
(ScotMartin from TX)
I don't think my opinion on him has changed very much. I don't think he was completely ready, but the Rangers certainly needed him. I've certainly seen him dominate at times, and that's the thing -- he at least shows you he CAN do it, which puts him way ahead of most -- he just needs to do it consistently. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-09-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Where would you rank Derek Holland, in terms of breakout potential, heading into next year?
(Kevin from Fort Worth, TX)
He needs to keep the ball in the park more, which will be tough in Texas, but that's his main flaw. He's a sleeper pick I think, because if he does rein it in, he's going to put up good numbers. (Marc Normandin)
2009-08-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Standard keeper league, who do you like better long-term, Derek Holland or Joba Chamberlain? Congrats on the new gig!
(Paul from Fort Worth, TX)
Me personally, I'd go with Joba. But full disclosure: I have a much, much better track record picking hitters than pitchers. (Ken Funck)
2009-08-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jay, assuming you think that the AL East crown is probably settled, how do you see the wild card battle playing out? Will it be just between Boston and Texas? What are the keys to watch for, outside of Wakefield's return?
(Nick Stone from New York City)
Hello, Nick! At this point in the season I'm having a hard time taking the Rays seriously as Wild Card contenders given their inconsistency on both sides of the ball, so I do think it will come down to the Rangers and Red Sox. Earlier this year I'd have said it would be difficult to imagine the Sox struggling this much for this long given their roster, and that it would be even tougher to envision the Rangers maintaining their hot start given their pitch-to-contact ways. The Sox have had a lot of injuries, not only among the players they knew were health risks to begin but also to the players representing the first line of defense against them, and while I like the deadline moves they've made, particularly Victor Martinez, right now they're a mess. The Rangers have had injury problems as well, and done a very nice job augmenting their team in-season by calling up Derek Holland and Neftali Feliz, and as minor as it is, I like their acquisition of Pudge for the stretch.

I can envision this race coming down to whose young pitching holds up best under pressure -- Buccholz or Holland/Feliz. It's bigger than that, of course, but that's what I'll be watching most closely. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-07-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)I know this is premature...but who cares? Derek Holland or Jon lester longterm because Holland looked downright nasty last night. If that is a sign of things to come, watch out.
(Jack from LA)
Holland, but it's close. And boy, was that a good start. The Mariners, yeah, but still. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-08-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)But Cardinals fans are stupid. Why else would they live in that boring sweatbox they call St. Louis? Derek Holland seems to have the stuff to be a solid starter in 2010...just typical rookie struggles?
(Gray from Chicago)
Oh man St. Louis, are you going to take that from Chicago? Homers are his problem. His walk rates aren't very high, but they are too high for those homer rates and maybe that park. It's a shame he doesn't keep it in the park more, because the Rangers can actually catch it this year. (Marc Normandin)
2009-06-05 15:30:00 (link to chat)Areyou concerned with the performance of Derek Holland?
(Jay from Dallas)
He's 22, has a K/BB of 2.40 and has been victimized by a .337 BABIP and 65% strand rate. So.. no, not concerned. Just because players are top prospects doesn't automatically mean they will come up and dominate right away. Give it some time. (Eric Seidman)
2009-05-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)I know he got knocked around a bit, but I really like what I saw out of Derek Holland. He thre strikes, missed some bats and never had one major implosion. Yankees kill lefties as it is. Your impressions?
(Ryan from NJ)
I share your impressions. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-05-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any word on when Derek Holland may be moving into the Rangers' rotation?
(goiter6 from MN)
No, but I wouldn't count on it being soon. I'm also not sure how you stretch him out -- longer relief stints? Send him back to Oklahoma? (Will Carroll)
2009-04-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)When do you foresee Derek Holland being put into the rotation?
(Gray from Chicago)
I would say after the All-Star break. The Rangers are taking the old-fashinoned approach to breaking Holland in to the major leagues, starting him off in low-leverage relief situations. It's a good idea that has worked well in the past. (John Perrotto)
2009-04-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)The A's have taken Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, highly regarded pitching prospects with little experience over A-ball, and put them in the Opening Day rotation. The Rangers have taken Neftali Feliz and Derek Holland, highly regarded pitching prospects with little experience over A-ball, and put them in AAA, with Nolan Ryan saying they will likely initially pitch out of the bullpen when they do get to the majors. Which path do you think is preferable?
(X from Y)
I lean towards the latter, although the pitchers in question are so different that the divergent approaches probably work best for each pairing. It's worth noting that breaking in pitchers in Oakland is much different than doing so in Arlington, so you can push the envelope more. (Joe Sheehan)
