Wow, this is great work! This is an exciting time to be a Cubs fan.

I don't recall a comparable glut of almost-ready, high ceilinged infield talent --- ever.

Wouldn't it be easier for Bosio to help Straily in the majors? Just sour grapes on my part that he apparently won't be slipped immediately into the rotation as I assumed when I first heard the deal.

They had Jake Arrieta on the same plan. I don't think Straily is here for immediate impact to be honest and they might just be taking a flier on a guy with homer issues.

I think Bosio gets to him eventually, even if it happens in ST/2015 rather than right now.

Straily has more than homer issues to deal with. He's throwing 87-88 now: http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfxo.aspx?playerid=9460&position=P&pitch=FA
That's not the velocity trend of a healthy pitcher.

The Cubs certainly have a lot of high-quality prospects now.

How is this an up move for Russell?

He's double blocked at SS.

He's blocked at 3B.

And Bogaerts was ranked far ahead of any of these guys and isn't exactly tearing it up.

Remember Dempster was having an even better year when he went to Texas than either of these two and that didn't work out at all.

This smacks of the desperation the Red Sox showed in chasing Peavy.

If all five guys (Castro, Bryant, Russell, Baez, Alcantara) end up hitting their potentials, they move Bryant to OF, and have four players for three positions. Odds are at least one will get injured and/or be a bust. So chances are slim that a really good player will be "blocked" for any length of time. P.S. Bogaerts is only 21. A little too soon to pass judgment.

Did you forget about Almora and Soler along with Lake and the acquired McKinney in the OF? A little crowded for Bryant.

Moving Bryant to RF and Baez to 3B degrades both of their values.

Didn't forget about any of them. Your comment was about a crowded infield, not the outfield, which is rather uncrowded. Lake isn't going to block anyone, btw. They have essentially all three OF spots to fill long-term. If by some chance all three of Bryant, Almora and Soler pan out as outfielders, that's great for the Cubs. McKinney is not considered a top prospect at this point.

The "up arrow", btw, is for fantasy purposes. Russell will now play for a team with deeper pockets, in a potentially great lineup, in a much friendlier park. And his odds of playing SS have gone down a bit. Net, probably a wash or a slight uptick in long-term fantasy value.

Addison Russell had a much clearer path to the SS job in Oakland (Lowrie, Punto)on a team that will be better sooner than he does in Chicago (Castro, Baez, and indirectly Bryant).

So the net effect for him can hardly be an up arrow.

Down arrow all the way.

I don't see this as a problem to worry about at this point; these things tend to have a way of working themselves out. If nothing else, somewhere along the line the Cubs will need premium talent to trade for pitching, since there is basically none in their system.

am I the only one that thinks this trade makes the cubs look even dumber for taking schwarber over ajax?
