Collateral Damage Daily Details

by Corey Dawkins

There have been many requests for an in-depth explanation of the new Collateral Damage Daily format. Most of the fields in the table are self-explanatory, but there are a few that are not as clear-cut.

  • Date stands for the first day that the player missed time as a result of his injury. Most of the time, players on the disabled list were are placed on the DL retroactive to this date, which makes it easy to tell when their injury occurred, but for day-to-day injuries (coming to CDD soon) the injury date has often been harder to find.
  • AGL stands for average games lost and is automatically calculated from the database. Some of the numbers may seem out of whack, but these are almost always the result of small sample sizes, as in the case of rare facial surgeries.
  • Return is the expected date back; it is calculated from AGL and Date.
  • TAD is the average TAv lost due to the injuries and is a calculated field.
  • Risk is the the risk of injury recurrence.
  • Advice is a buy/sell/hold recommendation going forward. Several things factor into this, including risk of re-injury, expected production, and role on the team.

BP Comment Quick Links

Have the inquiries included a request to be able to leave comments? Because I'd like to have that, and the new format doesn't make it obvious (or, as far as I can tell, possible) how to do it. That would be appreciated.

We're working on adding comments to CDD and to the Daily Hit List.

As an example, if the new format permitted comments, I could leave a snarky remark asking when you expected BJ Upton to be activated so you could remove him from the list. With no comment opportunity, your life has one more void.

May I gently suggest that injuries be organized, perhaps by severity or expected length of time missed, so that the players who might be coming back sooner are near the top? Even alphabetically would help, as right now it seems to be just a long list of names, some of whom aren't going to play this season. More updates would be helpful too, please--Quentin hasn't been updated since April 7th, for example.
Thank you for your efforts.

I agree- some sort of organization would make it much more readable: perhaps keep separate the players whose statuses were updated in the last week or so?

We are working on some additions that should make it easier to read/use. The columns are all sortable (with the exception of player name but we are working to address that too with the additions) by clicking on the column heading.

In terms of updates, I give updates whenever I hear about them but sometimes there are just not too many updates.

Just know that I am, and all of us at BP, are working towards making this the best product possible.

Can there be a field for the date information was updated, to sort by that? If I'm coming every day, what I want to know is what you've added/changed since the last time I was there.

We also need to see some maintenance done on the AGL / return data itself. Sorry to be blunt, but listing a Bobby Jenks return data of March 08 and a Stephen Drew return date of April 02 is just sloppy, not to mention the players off the DL like Burnett and Upton who are still listed here.

Those values are calculated based off of historical data but it one of the things we are working to address.

Hoopefully you can revise the table to allow an override of these dates when prudent, or at least have a separate column / comment with your best-guess outlook.

That is one of the top priorities.

Not sure why you leave the basic line of info there when it is often contradicted by updated notes. Thus, Devine has shoulder inflammation, 15 day DL, back May 11. Why are you taking up space with that line of detail when you then note he's gone for the season? What is the purpose of the outdated and useless info?

That one is on me. I categorized the Tommy John info separately (and thus didn't get reflected in the list) because he was officially placed on the DL for the shoulder inflammation. That should be all set now.

The comment however did reflect that he underwent TJS.

The additions we are working on should help with this by grouping the injuries so you don't have to see every single season ending injury every time you start reading.

On a positive note I do want to say that once the kinks are worked out this format should be a plus.
