Peter Bourjos vs. Bengie Molina

by Sam Miller

What follows is last night's Peter Bourjos inside-the-park home run, which is one of America's great inventions. And also a Bengie Molina triple, from 2010. Same sport!

"I could watch Peter Bourjos run all day!"—You

(14.26 seconds for Bourjos. And 14.67 seconds for Molina.)

My god is Bourjos fast. I wonder how his speed compares to Reyes from 2006 and to Carlos Gomez now?

Gomez had an IPHR last year. He had a tiny hesitation rounding first, but nowhere near as pronounced as Bourjos' slowdown. They ran the bases in essentially the same time, though, with Gomez getting 14.29 sec to Bourjos' 14.26 sec. (And, honestly, my stopwatch skills aren't exactly precise enough to give us two-decimals of precision)

Here's the Gomez trot: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=14069

Yes, Bourjos is fast. But Bengie got a cycle that night. :-) Plus, if Craig Gentry had hit the Bengie ball, he would have made another lap....

It's probably something to do with the lossiness of the GIF, but it quite literally looks like Bourjos' feet aren't touching the ground.

I've never seen anyone run like Gomez. I remember when he was a rookie with the Mets, he got a single. Then he advanced first to third on a one hopper hit directly to the rightfielder. It was ridiculous.
