Cleveland Guardians exile SP Cal Quantrill to the Colorado Rockies for C Kody Huff.

 

As Jeffrey Paternostro noted on the latest episode of Five & Dive, it feels almost vindictive to banish a starter to a place where he’ll get hit so hard they’ll have to put him in a full-body suit made out of Alex Torres’ hat. Huff’s profile trends heavily toward “future scout,” which can’t be worth more than Quantrill’s well-being.

 

No one ever uses the “he can’t keep getting away with it” meme with a second panel that’s just “okay, yeah, he didn’t,” but that was Quantrill’s 2023 season. After his rWAR outpaced his WARP significantly in two years of starting for the Guardians, 5.7 to 1.5, reality came as a sledgehammer, with hitters slugging .456 against both his fastballs and his offspeed, rendering him below replacement level.
