The Call-Up

Dilson Herrera

by Jeff Moore and Craig Goldstein

In the prospect world, we like to use the term helium for a player whose fictitious stock is rising fast, and perhaps no player in the minors had more helium this year than Dilson Herrera. His promotion to the majors serves as the culmination of an incredibly fast journey through three levels in the Mets system (and skipping over one).

Acquired last season from the Pirates in the Marlon Byrds/John Buck deal (along with Vic Black), Herrera was on the radar of the prospect landscape, but no one seemed to believe he’d be a guy the Pirates would miss too dearly. One year later, it looks like the Pirates will miss him more than we had thought, but it's still be too early to tell if he’s a guy the Mets can plan their future around.

Herrera’s call-up comes as a surprise, not only because he’s only 20, started the year in the Florida State League and is skipping Triple-A, but also because he is very much still an athlete learning how to play baseball. That was noticeable during spring training, when his bat speed was hindered by an inconsistent bat path and a loop in his swing that caused far too many weak pop-ups and fly balls.

"but there’s also a decent chance he starts next season back in Triple-A and continues the progress he made this year"

I'm relatively new to tracking player development through the minors, so this might be a novice question, but: How common is it for teams to bring a player up when the minor league season ends and rosters expand simply for player development, not because they "earned a trip to the show"?

And is this strategy less likely for top prospects like Jorge Soler because of the expectations surrounding them?

Did the Mets start his free agency clock by bringing him up before Sept 1? And if they did, why would you do that? I know they have more money that PGH but why bring him up 2 days early?

If the Mets are worried about his free agency clock, then they'll keep him down for an extra 2 days next year to make up for the 2 days this year. I doubt it will make that big a difference one way or another.

Thanks for the info. What do you think the impact is for Wilmer Flores? In spite of his underwhelming MLB performance to date, he's been needing playing time and this would theoretically cut into his. To me, it doesn't make sense have Flores and Herrera on the same roster, unless Flores gets time at 3B. But that's not going to happen since apparently Eric Campbell is the Mets' top priority.

Until Murphy got injured they were playing Flores at short six days out of seven with Tejada riding the bench. Bringing up Herrera I think would just mean a return to that plan. But they've been so wishy washy with Flores all season that there's a good chance this becomes another excuse to bench him. I hope not--I've seen all I need to of starting shortstop Ruben Tejada in this lifetime.

You're certainly right that they could also do an infield of Flores, Tejada and Herrera from left to right. despite what I said I wouldn't mind that, since I don't think Campbell is more than a bench player either. Of course, Wright started last night, so there's a good chance that's back on the table, sadly. I think he really needs to be shut down for the year--I'm convinced his shoulder is much worse than he's saying. He always tries to play through pain even when it's to his and the teams detriment.

This is where the Mets front office should earn their salary. In 1975 the Yankees sent Doc Medich to the Pirates for an untested prospect named Willie Randolph and helped turn the franchise, which had been moribund, think Horace Clarke, for over a decade, around. The Mets should fool some GM into thinking Daniel Murphy is a major league 2nd baseman and trade him and Montero, or another of their impressive stable of young pitchers, for a SS or a LF. Herrera is a gamble but this is a chance for the Mets to hit a HR, figuratively. I saw him play 5 times this summer and he has the hit tool.
