Today we reveal the Baseball Prospectus staff predictions for the division standings and the major player awards  (MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year) in the American and National Leagues. Each staff member's division standings predictions may be found later in the article. Here, we present a wisdom-of-the-crowds summary of the results. In each table you'll find the average rank of each team in their division with first-place votes in parentheses, plus the results of our pre-season MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year voting.

For the MVP voting, we've slightly amended the traditional points system in place that has been used elsewhere, dropping fourth- and fifth-place votes to make it 10-7-5 for the MVP Award, and the regular 5-3-1 for the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year Awards (that's 5 points for a first-place vote, 3 points for a second-place vote, etc.). Next to each of these selections we've listed the total number of ballots, followed by the total number of points, and then the number of first-place votes in parentheses, if any were received.

One serious note before we get down to the fun, though. Kevin Goldstein and Jason Parks are still running their contest for the Up and In podcast. There are loads of awesome prizes, and it's for a good cause (Doctors Without Borders). Please consider entering and join in the fun!

Michael Street has the Yankees in third place behind the Red Sox and Rays but also has them winning the wild card?
Bodhizefa
3/31
The Yankees' mystical powers know no boundaries!

Seriously, though, I suppose it's possible. The Rays and Yankees could have an overall tie record-wise, but the Rays could finish above them in the division if they had a better head-to-head record against the Yanks. The Wild Card tiebreaker game could then be won by the Yankees (although I'm not 100% sure if that game counts on the regular season standings).

michaelstreet
3/31
That wasn't on my original ballot--I picked the Yanks to finish third and the Rays to win the Wild Card.

Looks like it's been fixed.

That would be the fault of a tired editor/compiler--me. Sorry 'bout that, but fixed it up again.

Would be curious, does the surprising announcement of Belt making the starting line-up out of the gate change anyone's vote for NL RoY?

Not a single BP staffer sees Francisco Liriano finishing in the top 3 in the Cy Young balloting. Just noting that.

I kept switching between putting Francisco Liriano and Jered Weaver actually and ended up picking Weaver.

John Perrotto, at season's end you either will hang your head low in shame for being the only one not to pick the Red Sox, or you will look like the (evil) genius you are!

A lot of people are picking Mark Trumbo as AL ROY (specially over at SI)...I'm surprised to not even see his name here, even as a token mention.

Salt Lake skeptics.

Makes sense. But not all players coming out of Salt Lake are zeroes. He certainly has a shot at the most PA's for AL rookies, and don't forget who gets to vote for this thing.

So, PECOTA sees Evan Longoria having the worst year of his career, but the BP staff sees him in the hunt for the AL MVP. Can someone please reconcile these two positions ? What is it that is throwing PECOTA off ? I don't think this is an unreasonable question to ask, is it ?
kenfunck
3/31
Certainly not an unreasonable question, but I'm not sure if my answers will be satisfying.

1) I can only speak for myself, but I think most of us use PECOTA the same way: we look at it, give it some weight, then apply our own beliefs, analyses and prejudices. The less I know or have actually watched a player, the more weight I give to the projection. Sometimes this turns out well (see: drafting Colby Lewis and Dustin Pedroia); sometimes it doesn't (see: drafting Chad Orvella and Justin Huber). I'm more optimistic about Longoria than PECOTA is.

2) I'll leave it to someone that tinkers with the machine to give explanations for why Longoria's projection is lower than many indidivual expectations, but it's certainly possible that PECOTA is dead on and the collective "we" have been thrown off by our own opinions, desires, expectations and eyes.
michaelstreet
3/31
I also pick MVPs based on who I think will win the award, not necessarily who's the most deserving. That means I favor playoff teams (as most voters do), and I've got Tampa Bay winning the Wild Card.

As for our picks relative to PECOTA, players can (and do) beat PECOTA projections--and players who exceed expectations are often chosen as MVPs.
cwyers
3/31
I don't see that those positions need to be reconciled - if you look at my ballot, all the MVP/Cy/RoY portions were filled out based on the PECOTA-projected WARP leaderboards, if by "based on" you mean "copy and pasted from." Longoria is second on my ballot.

Hmmmmm ... looks awfully similar to the 2010 final standings. Conventional wisdom remains stronger than analysis.

Professor Parks. Going a little Homerish with the Kinsler and C.J. Wilson picks. I like it.
crperry13
3/31
I think he's making an obscure philosophical point that at this point in the season, the awards are more random than anything else. Only two things are certain in this world: Death, and the fact that Albert Pujols is older than he says he is.
kenfunck

I love it when the Perfesser goes a little Homerish:

"Tell me, O muse, of those ingenious heroes Kinsler and Wilson who travelled far and wide after they had sacked the famous town of Arlington ... "
owgreen
3/31
I was expecting a majority to favour the Sox over the Yanks but was surprised by the overwhelming majority. I guess I expected a distribution along the lines of 65/35, similar to the playoff odds report. For sake of comparison I looked at the AL West where there's a comparable difference in win expectancy and sure enough the vote is 20:10. Thoughts?

I didn't suggest that. I think it is genuinely interesting. Could be that nobody cares enough about the west to try to rationalize away the 2 games.

I would venture to guess that the writer's are generally more pessimistic about the Yankees' starting pitching and Jeter's ability to field better than a traffic cone.
marcello
3/31
Well, if every writer thought the Sox were just a slight favorite over the Yankees, you'd have 100% of the writers saying the Sox would win the division. So, even though they all only thought the Sox had a 52% chance of winning the division to the Yankees 48% chance (intentionally oversimplified example), you get a result that doesn't convey that.
bertflex
3/31
Parks not only takes C.J. and R.A. but also leaves Pujols and Halladay off? I'm shocked he doesn't have KC and Pit winning their divisions.

Wow ... 29 out of 30 BP writers pick the Red Sox. This is over the top even for BP.

How many times has BP picked the Red Sox the past decade? I think about 7. How many times have they been right? Exactly once. (One other year the Red Sox did win the division, BP picked the Yankees).

The Yankees have a lot more flexibilty for mid season additions to correct their starter problems.

The Red Sox have exactly none. Locked in with all those contracts. If Beckett and Matzo have the same season as last, the Yankees will have the better 4th and 5th starters by the end of the year.
SkyKing162
4/01
I don't think you can read this as "BPro thinks the Red Sox will win the division 29/30 times." It's more that the Red Sox are the solid favorite. I think the Yankees are generally getting short shrift for the division chances, but if I had to bet money at even odds, I'd pick the Red Sox.
Gabed22
4/01
I think the red sox might win the east too, but wow, 29/30, and on top of that everyone on espn.com too. it isnt like the yankees overachieved based on their run differential last year, or sufferred enormous losses this off-season. It's hard for me to beliueve that detroit or the Dodgers have a better chance to win their division than the Yankees (or even the Rays).
lmarighi
4/01
I don't say this as prediction, but I imagine more people than just me think that the step down from Pettite to Garcia/Colon/Millwood is not good, and worry that Burnett will be even worse, as well as Jeter not bouncing back. Maybe all of those things will turn out to be non-factors, but that's certainly why I would have put the Yankees behind the Red Sox.
