Episode 8: Kevin And Jason Learn Things

by Kevin Goldstein

This time around we leaned on our own for information.  Our feature interview is a fascinating talk with Colin Wyers about all of the new defensive statistics out there, and how the big problem with them just might be the data they are using more than anything else.  Plus, Marc Normandin explains the Padres to us, a long discussion on post-modern fiction, and we respond to an e-mailer looking to work in baseball . . . ok, we crush his dreams.  As always, we hope you enjoy listening as much as we like doing it.

Note: We do alert you to the presence of the occasional adult language. Don't say we didn't warn you.

  • If the data is bad, what are we getting out of it?
  • The data problem isn't one of error, it's a problem of bias, and a lesson on parallax

We promise to talk about it next week, and while we might due some mid-week stuff from time to time, schedules aren't going to work this time.

Suggestions: literature - read some Philip Roth. Keith Law isn't a fan, but Roth is an enriching writer. Try Portnoy's Complaint, The Great American Novel (baseball poetry), Operation Shylock, etc. Also, some post-colonial stuff is essential in "getting" the world. Early V.S. Naipaul is a great starting place.
Beer - there is a style of beer, mostly found in Canada, but pretty rare in the US, called Cream Ale. The generic version most popular in Canada comes from Sleeman's. As its name suggests, it is a creamier ale, a smoother drink than other ales. Well worth a sip on a warm night.

Not Jim is so good that I've started recording Rockies Weekly just to see how the real one measures up.
