Five and Dive

Welcome to Five and Dive, a new, twice-weekly podcast from Baseball Prospectus. We’re named Five and Dive in honor of all the pitchers out there who can’t or won’t go beyond five innings. We respect their laziness or lack of ability. Each episode we will cover five topics of interest that come from either recent events, articles we’ve written, articles we’ve thought about writing but thought “too much research,” and whatever else is on our minds. Craig Goldstein, Editor-in-Chief of Baseball Prospectus, is your host, and he will be joined once each week by Emma Baccellieri of Sports Illustrated and Bradford William Davis of the New York Daily News.

Episode 68: Coffee Talk

August 8th, 2020

In Episode 68, Emma and Jeffrey tackle five mostly baseball topics while Craig gets new windows installed.

1. Protocols Me Maybe: Baseball has new (old) actual (actual this time) protocols. Also a lot of doubleheaders

2. This segment does not get a punny title: Ryan Christenson made a gesture that looked an awful lot like a nazi salute in an MLB dugout.

3. Weights and Measures: The ball is no longer juiced

4. Thanks, I hate it: Blue Emu ads and Blue Jays roster weirdness

5. A Look Forward: Jeffrey and Emma both pick series with division title implications as we approach the quarter point (not pole) of the season. Also, a drone interlude.

Episode 66: No more seltzer, no more baseball?

August 1st, 2020

In Episode 66 Emma and Craig chat about watching baseball in the park in 2020, and then tackle five mostly baseball topics.

1. Protocols Me Maybe: Things aren’t getting any better for the Marlins or the Phillies or the Cardinals or…well, baseball.

2. Then I saw an ace, I’m a belieber: Shane Bieber might win the AL Cy Young. He’ll definitely win it if baseball gets canceled Monday.

3. Craig’s Favorite Topic: Some chat about the Astros/Dodgers kerfuffle, and what exactly did Dusty Baker say to Joe Kelly?

4. Thanks, I hate it: A Teddy Bear Jamboree in the stands and a new hard seltzer

5. A Look Forward: Craig wants an Ace-Off. Emma goes prospect watching.

Episode 65: Just Press Pause

July 28th, 2020

In Episode 65 Jeffrey and Craig tackle five mostly baseball topics, are definitely not epidemiologists.

1. Protocols Me Maybe: The Marlins have an outbreak, and MLB doesn’t seem to have a plan.

2. The Bard returns to the stage: Daniel Bard made it all the way back and is throwing 99

3. Also, he’s a pitcher: Verlander and Kluber go down with major arm injuries, is this just correlation, or is the quick ramp up to blame?

4. Small sample size, small sample sample size (TM Ted Berg): We look at the first 3-4 games of baseball and pick out some standout performances. Are they for real?

5. A Look Forward: Our upcoming games to watch.

July 24th, 2020

In Episode 64 Emma and Craig tackle the five mostly baseball topics as there is now actual baseball.

1. Bet on Betts: Mookie signs a big extension

2. Protocols Me Maybe: Juan Soto tests positive right before Opening Day and baseball doesn’t really seem to have a great plan for this.

3. Supersize Me: The MLB playoffs have expanded

4. Opening Day: There is actual baseball to talk about

5. Buffalo Bichette: We celebrate Craig’s favorite twitter meme and the Jays having a place to play.

July 23rd, 2020

In Episode 63 Bradford and Craig tackle the five teams in the AL East, again, as we wrap up our 2020 MLB preview.

1. The Yankees are both really good and really fun, truly America will embrace them now, right?

2. The Rays roster is confounding, and Bradford sneaks in some Willy Adames hype while Jeffrey is briefly away from his headphones.

3. The Red Sox man, the Red Sox.

4. The Blue Jays still do not have a place to play as of recording or publishing, or probably Opening Day,

5. We did the Orioles preview again too, because we are professionals.

1. Well the Gavin Lux chat in the Dodgers segment didn’t age well.

2. Everyone on the Diamondbacks is 30.

3. The Padres continue to be more fun than good, and that might not be good enough for AJ
Preller’s continued job prospects.

4. The Rockies continue to confound both of the hosts.

5. Well the Wilmer Flores chat in the Giants segment aged well.

In Episode 61 Emma and Craig tackle the five teams in the NL Central as we continue our 2020 MLB preview.

1. PECOTA likes the Reds a little bit more than our hosts.

2. PECOTA has a completely reasonable Cubs projection this year. Cubs Twitter might disagree mind you.

July 20th, 2020

In Episode 60 Emma and Craig tackle the five teams in the AL Central as we continue our 2020 MLB preview.

1. The Twins are more good than fun, but they are pretty good. And pretty fun assuming you like dingers.

2. Cleveland hasn’t changed the team name to the Lindors yet, but maybe they should.

3. The White Sox are more fun than good. They are plenty fun though.

4. The Tigers have exciting young pitchers like Casey Manning, Matt Mize, and Spencer Turnbrurl (sp?)

5. The Royals aren’t particularly fun or good.

Episode 59: AL West Preview

July 17th, 2020

In Episode 59 (don’t listen to Craig), Jeffrey and Craig tackle the five teams in the AL West as we resume our 2020 MLB preview.

1. What a weird year this is going to be for the Astros. They are probably still very good, but maybe not third-best-team-in-baseball good

2. The Athletics have very good uniforms, but the rest of the aesthetics aren’t so good.

3. The Los Angeles Adells of Anaheim, IMO

4. As usual we like the Rangers more than we should, and Craig definitely thinks Mike Minor is
for real.

5. The Mariners: Sorry, Meg

Episode 58: NL East Preview

July 16th, 2020

In Episode 58 (don’t listen to Craig), Jeffrey and Craig tackle the five teams in the NL East as we resume our 2020 MLB preview.

1. The Washington Nationals are kind of boring as World Series champs go

2. The Mets are never boring, but might have a dearth of starting pitching for a change (this was even before Jacob deGrom tweaked his back).

3. The Braves are probably better than this (this was even before they signed Yasiel Puig).

4. The Phillies bullpen doesn’t look so hot, but Spencer Howard is one to watch,

5. The Marlins are projected to win 27 games. This is apparently the worst thing to ever happen.

1. So we beat on, boys against the current, borne ceaselessly back into the town: Baseball is officially back, although it’s probably a bad idea and they made the process as messy as possible.

2. Bad Medicine: About it being a bad idea…

3. Let’s play, too: The Grand Ole Opry will have a Grand Ole Taxi Squad.

4. Haha, This Sucks, Man: Should baseball be coming back at all?

2. An Offer You Literally Can’t Refuse: This is the stupidest day in MLB history, a record that will be broken by every subsequent day in MLB history. Also, Craig should check Twitter less.

4. How Much Can One Playoff Round Cost, Michael? $10?: It’s actually, uh, about forty million times that,
