Five and Dive

Welcome to Five and Dive, a new, twice-weekly podcast from Baseball Prospectus. We’re named Five and Dive in honor of all the pitchers out there who can’t or won’t go beyond five innings. We respect their laziness or lack of ability. Each episode we will cover five topics of interest that come from either recent events, articles we’ve written, articles we’ve thought about writing but thought “too much research,” and whatever else is on our minds. Craig Goldstein, Editor-in-Chief of Baseball Prospectus, is your host, and he will be joined once each week by Emma Baccellieri of Sports Illustrated and Bradford William Davis of the New York Daily News.

Episode 52: Bring back Better Off Ted

May 29th, 2020

In Episode 52, Craig, Bradford, and Emma tackle five more (mostly) baseball topics.

1. An offer you can refuse: “Max Scherzer throws some high heat to the League’s latest economic proposal.” – Craig Goldstein

2. Minor Threat: Some teams are furloughing minor leaguers, some teams are cutting them, and a scant few are going to keep paying them, imagine that.

3. What we need right now are athletes: Pro athletes have been deemed essential, what does that even mean?

4. Bad Max: Max Kepler’s excuse for his recent instagram posts doesn’t really seem all that plausible.

5. The Duality of Franchise History: You know we had to talk about it.

Episode 51: Student Activity Council

May 23rd, 2020

In Episode 51, Craig and Emma discuss all-nighters and then tackle five more (mostly) baseball topics.

1. Safety Dance: The Union and League continue to debate health and safety standards for a return to play, we assume they will get to the whole money stuff eventually.

2. The Rent is Too Damn High!: At least it is for the Athletics, who are paying about as much for the stadium as a three-bedroom in SoHo.

3. Furloughdown for the Letdown: Teams have begun to look at their June budget sheets, and it’s not what you want (if you work for a baseball team).

4. The Next Last Dance: The Last Dance is the only sports we have, so we consider some baseball options.

5. Thanks I O’hate it: If you are doing some last-minute shopping for Emma’s sister’s graduation present, might we suggest Dale Degroff’s The Craft of the Cocktail.

Episode 50: Porcelain Tower

May 14th, 2020

In Episode 50, Craig and Bradford tackle five more (mostly) baseball topics.

1. An offer you can refuse: Now MLB hasn’t actually officially sent their offer to the Player’s Association yet, but we do somehow seem to know a whole lot about it.

2. Our people will call your people: MLB hasn’t officially postponed the 2021 WBC to 2023, but everyone seemed to find about it on Twitter, including (checks notes) several participating countries.

3. Boros’s Law: It’s like Voros’s Law, but for campaigning powerful agents to Stalin. Or maybe it’s like Godwin’s law.

4. Craig decided that “From the horse’s mouth” wasn’t too mean: Mark Teixeira wants you to do as he says not as he did.

5. Chicago Fire: J.B. Pritzker has been a real Dick Wolf about the whole MLB restart.

Episode 49: Four and Dive

May 6th, 2020

In Episode 49, Jeffrey and Craig tackle four more (mostly) baseball topics. Sorry, there just isn’t that much news and we were already stretching with the murder hornets.

1. KBOh Yeah: There’s a nationally televised live baseball broadcast, as long as you have a lot of coffee or live on the West Coast.

2. Plouffe Scoop Riot: As for MLB, well it might start July 1st, or it might not. What is time anyway?

3. He’s not here to make friends: He should also not be here to try and fix baseball, the creator of The Bachelor, that is. I guess we are all struggling for content though. On that note…

4. Thanks, I hate it: Let’s check in with Tony Bees

Episode 48: Time to have exactly one boulevardier and dial 9-1-1

May 2nd, 2020

In Episode 48, Jeffrey and Craig discuss boulevardier proportions and then tackle five more (mostly) baseball topics.

1. Draft Resister: The MLB PA might actually stand up for the rights of non-members, or there might just be some anchoring going on.

2. Minor Threat: There probably isn’t going to be a minor league season, but we can’t say for sure yet.

3. Big Empty: MLB will play in empty stadiums if and when a season starts…for now.

4. Jeter Week No More: Jeter’s Hall of Fame induction gets postponed, during Jeter Week no less

5. Talkin’ Actual Baseball: The CPBL is fun, and now Craig and Jeffrey both want hot pots.

2. Three-Hub Plan: Baseball is 2020 might be spreading to more states where it’s 100 degrees in the shade.

3. In Rod We Trust: A-Rod and Steve Cohen are back in the Mets ownership mix, and Bradford rides the subway with Jeff Wilpon.

5. Employees of the Month (of May): Baseball ops and gamely employees remain in varying degrees of limbo.
