I remember August 2, 1979. I was eight years old, sitting on a stoop with my friend Arthur, when some older kids came by and told us that Thurman Munson had died. We didn’t believe them. Then another kid came by and said the exact same thing. And what were the chances of two kids…
Joe Sheehan shares a number of scattered thoughts on MLB, ranging from Ben Grieve’s surprising standing in the All-Star voting, to Edgardo Alfonso’s Mattinglian career path, and much more.
Before we get all excited about Coors Field looking like Coors Field! this week, let’s remember that the Yankees have been scoring like an NBA superstar in all parks this season. They can rake, and three games don’t tell us all that much. It wasn’t just that run scoring in Denver was down for two…
What in the world is Jerry Manuel doing?
From 1999 through 2001, Keith Foulke was the best reliever in baseball, with a 2.49 ERA in 274 1/3 innings. He led all relievers in Michael Wolverton’s Adjusted Runs Prevented in that time, and was an integral part of the White Sox’ AL Central title in 2000.

This morning, I read an interview with owners’ representative Bud Selig. The interview, conducted by The Sporting News’ Dave Kindred, was disappointing because it covered exactly zero new ground. Selig merely referenced all his standard talking points, and was at no time challenged on his positions about the economic and competitive state of the game.

It’s all about veteran leadership.
I thought I might be able to put a cap on the DiSar Awards for this year, but I can’t. Not yet. Not with one of the all-time great hackers finding his way into the lineupdespite a 390 OPSand keeping the heat on the leaders in the clubhouse.

The random thoughts going through Joe’s head over the course of this week
I tend to consider notes columns a lazy way to fill space. I really enjoy reading them, but I generally write them only when I can’t carry an idea through to column length. [Insert punch line here.] The weird thing is that each time I write one, as I did last Thursday, I get a…
How can the Diamondbacks content for another title if their bullpen continues to falter?
In the game I’m watching as I try and come up with a column, Shane Spencer just hit a three-run home run off of Mike Morgan to turn a 6-2 Diamondbacks lead into 6-5. Monday night, Spencer hit an eighth-inning grand slam off of Bret Prinz to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 7-4 lead…
I’m sick of the whole Roger Clemens thing. It’s a non-story, inflated beyond that by a local media corps with the judgment and control of a four-year-old on his second box of Froot Loops. Yes, Clemens bounced a fastball off of the shoulder pad Bonds wears on his right arm. Bonds crowds the plate, crushes pitches out over it and sticks said well-protected arm into the strike zone. Where exactly would you have Clemens pitch him?
Maybe I’m getting cranky in my old age, but I’m really starting to get sick of the way New York stories get blown way out of proportion and become national stories for no good reason. Remember, I’m from New York, and identify myself as a New Yorker. Love the town, love the people, hate the…
Despite the odd Jeremy Giambi for John Mabry spot, the A’s are on an offensive tear
