Another fine Meche

by Neil deMause

And we have our first data point against the hypothesis that big-time free-agent spending is more than ever the exclusive domain of the major media markets: Gil Meche, signing with the Royals for either four years and $45 million, or five years and $55-60 million, depending on the report. Of course, Gil Meche normally isn’t anybody’s idea of an impact free agent - one co-worker of a BPer quipped, “This is like a family on welfare buying a plasma TV that doesn’t work” - but given that this deal is likely for more than the entire Kansas City payroll last season, it’s at least a sign that K.C. is willing to spend big, if not necessarily wisely. Two or three more of these, and we’re going to need a new term: “uncompetitive balance,” anyone?
