  • Nationals SS Ian Desmond had a huge night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a homer, double and three RBI.
  • Nationals SP Ross Detwiler cruised to an easy victory, surrendering two runs on eight hits over his 6 2/3 innings of work.
  • Cubs SS Starlin Castro, hitting out of the leadoff spot in the lineup, went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles in a losing effort.
  • Cubs SP Jeff Samardzija struggled in a losing effort, allowing five runs on eight hits over his five frames.
(15-18) Brewers - 3 at 4 - Reds (20-16)
(19-16) Pirates - 7 at 3 - Mets (14-18)
  • Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez fired six innings of one-run ball.
  • Mets SP Shaun Marcum was smoked for six runs in 4 2/3 innings.
  • Pirates 1B Garrett Jones had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and two runs scored.
  • Mets OF Jordany Valdespin smacked a solo homer.
(19-16) Rockies - 0 at 3 - Cardinals (22-12)
  • Cardinals SP Shelby Miller struck out 13 batters in a one-hit shutout.
  • Rockies SP Jon Garland allowed three runs in five innings.
  • Cardinals OF Carlos Beltran went 2-for-4 with a solo homer.
  • Nolan Arenado went 0-for-3 and is now hitless in his last 14 at-bats.
(16-21) Phillies - 2 at 3 - Diamondbacks (21-15)
  • Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins went 2-for-5 and hit his second homer.
  • Batting eighth for the first time this year, Diamondbacks C Miguel Montero homered in the bottom of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie.
  • With Heath Bell having pitched three straight days, Diamondbacks RP David Hernandez got the call in the ninth and protected a one-run lead.
  • Phillies SP Tyler Cloyd, called up before the game, pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs in a no-decision.
(11-25) Marlins - 5 at 4 - Dodgers (13-21)
  • Marlins SP Jose Fernandez allowed three runs and eight hits over 6 innings for the win.
  • Dodgers SP Matt Magill allowed three runs and three hits over 5 innings in a no decision.
  • Marlins RP Steve Cishek picked up just his 5th save of the year.
  • Marlins SS Derek Dietrich launched his 1st homer of the year.
  • Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez hit his 4th homer of the year.
(21-14) Braves - 2 at 8 - Giants (21-15)
  • Giants SP Matt Cain won his second straight start by allowing two runs and three hits over eight innings.
  • Braves SP Tim Hudson struggled through 3 2/3 innings, giving up six runs in a loss.
  • Braves C Brian McCann homered in a second straight game.

American League:

(18-15) Indians - 4 at 10 - Tigers (20-13)
  • Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera blasted a three run homer.
  • Tigers SP Max Scherzer ran his record on the season to 5-0, allowing four runs on five hits over eight innings.
  • Indians 1B Nick Swisher had a very productive night, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Indians SP Corey Kluber had a very rough outing, surrendering eight runs on 11 hits in only 4 2/3 innings.
(18-19) Athletics - 3 at 6 - Mariners (17-19)
  • Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma allowed two runs over seven innings and struck out nine.
  • Athletics SP Dan Straily was tagged for six runs in five innings.
  • Mariners 3B Kyle Seager finished 2-for-2 with two walks, a steal and three runs scored.
  • Mariners OF Raul Ibanez hit a three-run homer off Dan Straily.
  • Athletics C Derek Norris hit his first homer of the year.
(22-14) Orioles - 9 at 6 - Twins (16-16)  (10 innings)
  • Orioles 3B Manny Machado went 3-for-6 with a go-ahead RBI single.
  • Orioles SP Jason Hammel gave up a season-high six runs in four innings in a no-decision.
  • Twins SP Mike Pelfrey yielded three runs in six innings as part of a no-decision.
  • Orioles OF Nate McLouth went 2-for-6 with two runs scored.
  • Twins C Joe Mauer went 3-for-5 with two RBI in an extra-inning loss.
(13-24) Blue Jays - 0 at 5 - Red Sox (22-14) 
  • Red Sox SP Jon Lester tossed a one-hit shutout.
  • Blue Jays RP Ramon Ortiz tossed five innings of one-run ball.
  • Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks went 2-for-4 with an RBI double.
  • Red Sox DH David Ortiz went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and an intentional walk.
(13-22) Angels - 7 at 5 - White Sox (14-19)
  • Angels SS Brendan Harris homered for the second consecutive game.
  • Angels RP Ernesto Frieri slammed the door in the ninth inning, locking up his sixth save of the season.
  • Angels RP Barry Enright, making a spot start in place of Tommy Hanson, was hit hard in a no-decision, allowing five runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings.
  • White Sox OF Alejandro De Aza continued his impressive power display, smashing his seventh home run of the season.
  • White Sox SP Dylan Axelrod had a rough go of it in a no-decision, giving up five runs on seven hits in his six innings of work.
(21-13) Yankees - 11 at 6 - Royals (18-14)
  • Yankees 1B Lyle Overbay had a monster night, as he finished 4-for-5 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored.
  • Yankees SP Phil Hughes allowed a season-high six runs in 5 2/3 innings, but still walked away with the victory.
  • Royals SP Wade Davis was knocked around for seven runs in five-plus innings.
  • Royals OF Jarrod Dyson connected for a three-run homer.
(22-13) Rangers - 4 at 2 - Astros (10-26)
Inter League:
 
(16-19) Padres - 3 at 6 - Rays (17-18)
  • Rays RP Fernando Rodney bounced back nicely from Monday's blown save attempt, slamming the door to earn his fifth save of the season.
  • Rays OF Ben Zobrist drove home a pair of runs.
  • Rays SP Alex Cobb delivered one of the most unusual performances of the young season, striking out a career-high 13 hitters, but failing to make it through five innings.
  • Padres OF Will Venable smashed his fifth home run of the season.
  • Padres SP Edinson Volquez turned in another strong outing in a no-decision, allowing two runs on three hits over six frames.

  • Reds designated C Corky Miller for assignment.
  • Reds activated C Ryan Hanigan from the 15-day disabled list.
  • Braves released LHP Dusty Hughes.
  • Braves released OF Jordan Parraz.
  • Cubs activated RHP Kyuji Fujikawa from the 15-day disabled list.
  • RHP Kameron Loe has elected free agency.
  • Cubs optioned RHP Rafael Dolis to Triple-A Iowa.
  • Phillies recalled RHP Tyler Cloyd from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
  • Phillies optioned LHP Joe Savery to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
  • Braves activated INF Paul Janish from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.
  • Dodgers transferred RHP Chad Billingsley from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
  • Dodgers optioned INF/OF Elian Herrera to Triple-A Albuquerque.
  • Dodgers purchased the contract of OF Scott Van Slyke from Triple-A Albuquerque.

  • Blue Jays activated RHP Michael Schwimer from the 15-day disabled list, optioned him to Triple-A Buffalo.
  • Tigers activated LHP Phil Coke from the 15-day disabled list.
  • Tigers optioned RHP Luke Putkonen from Triple-A Toledo.
  • Athletics optioned RHP Evan Scribner to Triple-A Sacramento.
  • Athletics recalled RHP Jesse Chavez from Triple-A Sacramento.

National League:

  • Reds SP Johnny Cueto (lat, oblique) will make his next rehab start on Tuesday, likely again at Low-A Dayton.
  • Diamondbacks SS Willie Bloomquist (oblique) has resumed taking batting practice.
  • Dodgers SP Zack Greinke (collarbone) tossed 80 pitches over 4 1/3 innings in his first rehab start with High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday.
  • Mets manager Terry Collins indicated Friday that X-rays came back negative on SP Shaun Marcum's thumb.
  • Cubs SP Matt Garza (lat) will make his second rehab start for Triple-A Iowa on Saturday.
  • Rockies SP Roy Oswalt threw three innings in an extended spring training game on Friday.
  • Marlins manager Mike Redmond indicated Friday that OF Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) "a ways off" and that there is currently no timetable for his return.
  • Dodgers 2B Mark Ellis (quad) is unlikely to come off the disabled list when he's first eligible on Sunday.
  • Marlins 1B Logan Morrison (knee) went 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk during an extended spring training game on Friday.
  • Braves RP Jonny Venters (elbow) threw a 15-pitch bullpen session on Friday and claimed that the ball came out of his hand great.
  • Marlins 2B Chris Valaika underwent successful surgery on Friday, having two pins inserted into his wrist.
  • Pirates 2B Neil Walker (hand) was scheduled to play in his second rehab game on Friday, but his game with Double-A Altoona was rained out.
  • Braves OF Jason Heyward (appendectomy) was held out of the lineup with Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday with what is be being referred to as "general soreness."
  • Reds OF Chris Heisey (hamstring) will begin his minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Pensacola on Monday.
  • Cardinals SP Chris Carpenter (shoulder) threw over 70 pitches during a bullpen session Friday at Busch Stadium.
American League:
  • An X-ray on Yankees 2B Robinson Cano's right foot came back negative.
  • Yankees manager Joe Girardi is hoping that RP Joba Chamberlain (oblique) will return from the disabled list on May 13.
  • Yankees OF Curtis Granderson (forearm) had a single in three at-bats in his first rehab game Thursday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
  • Angels RP Scott Downs is considered day-to-day with a right foot injury.
  • Angels SS Erick Aybar is considered day-to-day with right hamstring tightness.
  • Blue Jays OF Rajai Davis was removed from Friday's game against the Red Sox due to a strained oblique.
  • Athletics OF Chris Young (quad) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment within the next three days.
  • Twins SS Pedro Florimon (hamstring) made it through drills during batting practice without any issues on Friday, and will be available off the bench.
  • Athletics OF Coco Crisp (hamstring) is expected to test his injured hamstring when he begins running in the next few days.
  • Blue Jays SP Brandon Morrow (back, neck) is looking increasingly unlikely to make his next scheduled start against the Red Sox on Sunday.
  • Angels OF Peter Bourjos (hamstring) continues to receive treatment in Arizona, and will rejoin the team when they return to Anaheim on Monday.
  • Angels RP Kevin Jepsen (triceps) has been cleared to throw his first bullpen session on Saturday.
  • Angels SS Erick Aybar (hamstring) is unlikely to require a trip to the disabled list with his right hamstring tightness.
  • Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) took batting practice on Friday, and has been running and hitting for the past week.
  • Orioles RP Tsuyoshi Wada (elbow) struck out 10 over seven innings in an extended spring training game on Friday.
  • Red Sox RP Joel Hanrahan was diagnosed with damage to the flexor tendon in his right elbow.
Notes and Rumors:

National League:
  • Brewers SP Marco Estrada will have his next start pushed back from Saturday to Monday.
  • Giants manager Bruce Bochy indicated that SP Ryan Vogelsong's next turn in the rotation could be skipped.
  • Nationals OF Eury Perez is expected to be recalled by the Nationals when Jayson Werth is officially placed on the disabled list.
  • Nationals manager Davey Johnson indicated after Friday's game what OF Jayson Werth will indeed be heading to the disabled list with a strained right hamstring.
  • Marlins SP Tom Koehler has replaced Wade LeBlanc in the Marlins rotation and will make his first start of the season on Sunday against the Dodgers.
  • Giants manager Bruce Bochy stated Friday that SP Ryan Vogelsong will make his next scheduled turn in the rotation.
American League:
  • The Yankees are converting Dellin Betances to a full-time reliever at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
  • Indians SP Trevor Bauer is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Columbus to start the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Yankees.
  • Felix Doubront will start next Thursday against the Rays.
  • John Lackey will make his next start Tuesday against the Rays.
