Notable Performances from March 29-30

National League:

  • Carlos Marmol surrendered three runs in two-thirds of an inning and took a loss Saturday against the Astros.

  • Chris Johnson had a two-run homer and an RBI single as the Braves topped their Double-A Mississippi affiliate 10-0 on Saturday.

  • James McDonald gave up four runs in two innings as the Pirates lost to their Double-A Altoona affiliate 8-6 on Saturday.

  • Rickie Weeks hit his third home run of the spring Saturday in the Brewers' 4-3 defeat of the White Sox.

  • Placido Polanco homered twice and drove in five runs as the Marlins beat their Triple-A New Orleans affiliate 7-0 on Saturday.

  • A.J. Ellis smashed a grand slam home run off Jason Vargas on Friday, leading the Dodgers to a 9-8 victory over the Angels.

  • Josh Beckett’s spring finale didn’t go exactly as planned on Friday, as he surrendered seven runs on nine hits over his 4 innings of work.

  • Gregor Blanco had a nice night at the plate in Friday’s 3-1 victory over the Athletics, going 1-for-2 with an RBI triple and a walk.

  • Barry Zito turned in a solid performance in his spring finale on Friday, limiting the Athletics to one run on three hits over 5 1/3 innings of work.

  • Bronson Arroyo allowed only a Jason Kubel solo homer over six innings Friday against the Diamondbacks.

  • Patrick Corbin was impressive in his latest audition for a rotation spot, tossing six shutout innings against the Reds on Friday.

  • Jason Kubel slugged a solo home run in his return to Cactus League action Friday against the Reds.

American League:
  • Yoenis Cespedes launched another spring homer Saturday in the A's 4-3 win against the Giants.

  • Indians C/1B Carlos Santana slugged his second home run of the spring in Saturday's 9-1 victory over the Reds.

  • Brad Peacock threw three scoreless innings Saturday in the Astros' 6-3 defeat of the Cubs.

  • Felix Doubront struck out six in five scoreless innings in the Red Sox's 4-2 win over the Twins on Saturday.

  • Twins RHP Mike Pelfrey surrendered four runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings against the Red Sox on Saturday.

  • OF Jose Bautista went 2-for-3, homered and scored three times Saturday as the Blue Jays beat the Phillies 10-4.

  • 2012 first-round pick Marcus Stroman pitched two perfect innings Saturday to finish off the Blue Jays' defeat of the Phillies.

  • James Loney went 2-for-3 and hit his first spring homer Saturday as the Rays and Tigers played to a 3-3 tie.

  • Rays LHP Matt Moore was sharp Saturday, allowing one hit in four innings and striking out five against the Tigers.

  • Tigers RHP Doug Fister allowed two runs in six innings Saturday in a no-decision against the Rays.

  • Angels LHP Jason Vargas was lit up by the Dodgers in his final spring start Friday, allowing eight runs on seven hits in just 1 2/3 innings.
  • Tigers C Brayan Pena had a two-run homer and a triple Saturday against the Rays.

  • OF Nate McLouth hit a pair of homers Saturday to lead the Orioles to a 7-1 win over the Mets.

  • 1B Chris Davis went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run homer against the Mets on Saturday.

  • Angels OF Mike Trout stuffed the box score in Friday’s loss to the Dodgers, going 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored, three RBI and a stolen base.
  • Athletics OF Chris Young delivered a strong offensive performance on Friday, reaching base all four times in a losing effort against the Giants.

  • Athletics RHP A.J. Griffin looked sharp in his final test of the spring on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits over his five frames against the Giants.

Injury Updates

National League:
  • Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday that he's "pretty optimistic" third baseman Pablo Sandoval (elbow) will be ready for the start of the regular season.

  • Cubs 2B Darwin Barney has been ruled out for Opening Day because of a gash on his knee that required stitches.

  • Rockies 2B/SS Josh Rutledge left Saturday's game after being involved in a collision with Michael Cuddyer.

  • Mets LHP Johan Santana (shoulder) is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday.

  • The Mets will wait until Sunday to decide whether INF Justin Turner (calf) will open the season on the disabled list.
  • Giants placed LHP Eric Surkamp on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 22, with a strained left elbow tendon.

  • Giants placed INF Tony Abreu on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 22, with a strained quad.

  • Giants placed 1B Brett Pill on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 22, with a right knee injury.

American League:
  • Athletics placed SS Hiroyuki Nakajima on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27, with a strained left hamstring.

  • Astros placed RHP Alex White on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.

  • Rays manager Joe Maddon said Saturday that DH Luke Scott (calf) will miss the first 2-3 weeks of the season.

  • Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera (back) returned to the Indians' lineup Saturday.

  • Astros placed OF Fernando Martinez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27, with a strained oblique.

  • White Sox manager Robin Ventura confirmed that RHP Jesse Crain will be ready for Opening Day.

  • The Boston Globe reports SS Stephen Drew (concussion) is close to being cleared for minor league games.

  • Red Sox DH David Ortiz (heels) could be cleared to face live pitching in 1-2 weeks.

  • Red Sox LHP Franklin Morales (back) threw a bullpen session Saturday.

  • Kevin Gregg is unlikely to have a spot on the Dodgers' Opening Day roster 

  • Alfredo Marte will be the Diamondbacks' fourth outfielder.

  • Patrick Corbin has earned the final spot in the Diamondbacks' starting rotation.

  • Collin Cowgill will open 2013 as the Mets' everyday center fielder.

  • Kirk Nieuwenhuis has made the Mets' Opening Day roster.

  • Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Dodgers and LHP Clayton Kershaw have opened long-term extension talks.

  • The Brewers have informed OF Khris Davis that he's made the Opening Day roster.

  • Rule 5 pick OF Ender Inciarte has made the Phillies' Opening Day roster.

  • RHP Phillippe Aumont has won a spot in the Phillies' Opening Day bullpen. 

American League:

  • RHP Evan Scribner has earned a spot in the A's Opening Day bullpen.

  • 1B Nate Freiman has made the A's Opening Day roster.

  • Rangers manager Ron Washington said Saturday that CF Leonys Martin will have a green light on the basepaths this season.

  • The Yankees are not concerned about the general stiffness that prevented DH Travis Hafner from playing Saturday.

  • CF Julio Borbon has cracked the Rangers' 25-man roster.

  • OF Steve Pearce has made the Orioles' Opening Day roster.

  • RHP Clayton Mortensen has won an Opening Day bullpen spot.
