November 29, 2012 In A PickleThe Men Who Stare at RelieversDo you know what bullpen coaches do? I will be honest with you: I was a baseball fan for a long time before I learned that bullpen coaches exist and are different from bullpen catchers. (They both start with "C"!) It was even later that I learned that bullpen coaches are not merely functionaries employed to answer the phone when the pitching coach gets lonely and/or bored. Here is what Wikipedia claims:
Here is what the Baseball-Reference Bullpen says:
(The shocking lack of serial comma threatens to undermine the Bullpen's entire argument, but I think we all just have to breathe and get over it.)

I think the Bullpen coach would be more valued, and be more likely to be a former reliever, if bullpens were run in a more situational way.
The Orioles don't need a coach to tell Jim Johnson how to get ready to come into the 9th every day, but we might need a coach to help him decide how to get ready if he could be needed in the highest leverage situation we see between the 7th-9th inning (or those days where we go to 18 innings and we need him to pitch just the last one)
That's a very interesting proposition.
