Tater Trot Tracker

Trot Times for June 29

by Larry Granillo

The home run world settled a bit down on Wednesday, with only 22 balls clearing the fence. That's half the number from Tuesday, when every park in baseball decided to play like the new launching pad in Arizona. The Tater Trot Tracker works a bit better when there aren't 500 trots to time.

Let's get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Jorge Posada, New York Yankees - N/A seconds [video]
The ball went over the fence (well, it bounced off the top of the fence at least) but, for some reason, the umpire didn't see it. Posada did, slowing down considerably. He was tagged out halfway to second when the Brewers realized that the home run hadn't been called. The Yanks came out to complain, the umpires conferred, and someone called it a home run. Posada came around to score. But the play wasn't over yet. The umpires decided to review the home run and, at some point, called Posada back onto the field. The home run was finally official and Posada came around to score again. You know, just you're ordinary home run.

And that's how you get tagged out and run out two home run trots at the same time, with neither trot counting.

Slowest Trot: Carlos Lee, Houston Astros - 25.9 seconds [video]
It feels like it's been a while since we've seen Carlos Lee on these lists. His last home run was on June 7, so I suppose that makes sense. Somehow, though, Lee's presence as the slowest trot of the day doesn't seem all that odd at all. Hanley Ramirez wasn't too far behind, trotting in at 25.27 seconds.

Quickest Trot: Eric Thames, Toronto Blue Jays - 16.78 seconds [video]
I got pretty excited when I saw that the two Upton brothers - Justin and B.J. - were going to be the two quickest trotters of the day. Their times were nearly identical - 18.63 seconds for Justin and 18.68 seconds for B.J. - and it seemed like a fun story. But then I saw Eric Thames' trot. In the 24-year-old's first career home run, he rounded the bases in a lightning-fast 16.78 seconds. I love to see that. For an added measure, Thames knocked something off his hand/wrist while celebrating the home run near the on-deck circle, and had to go and find it before receiving his congratulations from his teammates. Now that's a fun tater trot.
