Baseball Prospectus SABR Day Summit

by Joe Hamrahi

On Saturday, January 29th, Baseball Prospectus and the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) will join together to present an unforgettable day of baseball at legendary Foley’s Pub and Restaurant in New York City.

The event will last four hours and feature spirited discussions from your favorite Baseball Prospectus personalities including Kevin Goldstein, Steven Goldman, Jay Jaffe and more as we celebrate SABR Day with our brethren Marc Appleman, Vince Gennaro, and some of the most recognized baseball writers, historians, and analysts from the Society of American Baseball Research. The summit is one of more than 30 SABR Day events being held across the country as a means of celebrating SABR and all things baseball. A complete list of all SABR Day events is online at the SABR website.

Also joining us on January 29th will be Gary Cohen of SNY (New York Mets broadcaster), Newsday baseball writer Ken Davidoff, Cory Schwartz from MLB.com and other surprise guests you’ll just have to see for yourself!

We’re still fine tuning all the details, but the program will run from 1:00 – 5:00 PM and will focus on the history of the game, scouting and player development, statistics, technology, media and current events. There will also be plenty of question and answer sessions with our panelists.

Admission is just $20 per person, and the price includes a buffet of hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, fries and unlimited soda. There will also be plenty of free giveaways and prizes!

So if you’re looking to warm your heart with baseball on a cold winter day, be sure to reserve your spot now. Just click the link below. Tickets must be purchased in advance and only 75 will be sold.

Any talk of a Chicago event coming up?

I know there was discussion of Kevin and BA's Jim Callis doing an event here in Chicago; Stu Shea and I pulled together a Chicago observation of SABR Day last year. As is, I'm still on the fence between going to NYC for this (Joe, you'll have an answer soon, I promise), but would strongly encourage folks to go, because of the great lineup, but also because Foley's is just a great place to hang out and talk baseball, with friends or with the folks you find there.

Can I bring a non-BP/SABR friend if they buy a ticket?

Of course, the event is open to everyone. I'll make that note above as well. Thanks for actually bringing that up.

Hey all - there have been some queries about admission, and names will be checked at the door. If you are using someone else's entry, contact Joe Hamrahi (email above) and work out details in advance if possible.

I'd like to add that we're already down to a limited supply of tickets, so if you're thinking about it, putting things off would be bad.

I'll be there - thank you for putting it on non-football weekend.

There's baseball, then there's the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 29th will be the week between them playing in the AFC Championship and the Super Bowl.

Limited space this time around. Given the response, we're certainly going to have more of these events over the course of the year...hopefully in different locations.

I'm going to look into a few options, but can't guarantee anything at the moment. As soon as I have more information, I'll let everyone know. But for now, assume the event is closed. Thanks

We've been asked to hold a Toronto event for years, maybe 2011 is the year we finally make it happen. I know I'd go. ;)

Jason Parks and I considering a casual, non-official gathering that evening after dinner at a bar to be determined . . . we'll let you know.

There is a bar called Stout on 33rd street that is big enough to accomodate a large crowd and has a great beer selection. Food isn't bad either.

My fantasy league gets together at Stout for the All*Star game each year. Great bar, kinda loud, but that's what you'd expect, right? May not be so bad on a Sunday afternoon, unless there's a Rangers game...

Good luck, everybody. Sounds like fun, and sorry I missed out on the signups...
