BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 You're probably as tired of reading about Tommy John surgery as we are writing about it, so let's just say Vargas came down with a complaint he called Night Hoss, underwent cupping and blistering last August to help balance his humors and should return to the mound in 2017. At that point Vargas will have one year left to fill out the back of the Royals' rotation and use his low-velocity lefty stylings to make good on his four-year, $32 million deal.
2015 Vargas is a slightly younger, slightly better, somewhat less durable lefty version of Jeremy Guthrie, and has thus far made good on his reasonable four-year deal. Like Guthrie, Vargas pitches to contact and avoids walks, throwing his standout changeup over a third of the time to keep hitters from gearing up for his delectable upper-80s fastball. He missed time last year with appendicitis and the year before with a blood clot in his shoulder, but his elbow, rotator cuff and labrum have yet to unravel. Vargas may not have the most eye-popping arsenal in the game, but there are far worse options cluttering up big-league rotations.
2014 Good golly, could it be? A decent idea gone right. Vargas was the third and most successful starter Angels GM Jerry Dipoto added to shore up his rotation. Although his game doesn't have centerfold appeal, Vargas is a steady arm who succeeds with deception. Be it the Felix Hernandez-like twist in his delivery or his willingness to throw his changeup whenever, the command-and-control southpaw gets the job done. He shouldn't be one of the three best starters on a team, but he deserves a rotation spot in the majors until he's too old to throw strikes.
2013 In last year’s annual, we suggested—hoped? noted whimsically?—that “a little extra torso twist on his leg kick” might turn Vargas into something better. Alas. Vargas’s small velocity bump didn’t make a difference and the pitcher was, but for a slight improvement in walk rate and a few extra long balls sailing away, a perfect match for Jason Vargas Now And Forever. There’s nothing wrong with that, and heaven help the teams that don’t have a couple Vargases around. But note that when pitching away from the pitcher-friendly expanse of Safeco, his career ERA is 1.74 runs higher.
2012 You don't hope for, or expect, any surprises from a guy like Vargas. But in September, Felix Hernandez suggested he tweak his motion, and wouldn't you know Vargas had the best month of his career. Before the change—a little extra torso twist on his leg kick—Vargas' fastball averaged 87.1 mph; after, it was 88.2. The effects cascaded. He began to throw his changeup half as often. Consequently, when he did throw the changeup, his whiff rate went way up, and his overall strike rate also improved. Yes, sample size issues. We want to be responsible here. But the numbers are just too pretty not to publish: 23 strikeouts, five walks, and a 2.03 ERA in 27 innings. Surprise!
2011 Mariners fans may not have felt Jarrod Washburn’s absence last season, since the “soft-tossing, fly-balling southpaw” position was filled capably by Vargas. In a smaller park or in front of a less sure-handed group of defenders, the lefty might not have killed opposing batters quite so softly, but there’s something to be said for players who make the most of their surroundings. His 4.85 road ERA serves as a warning of what lies in store if the lefty ever takes his plus changeup and command away from Safeco on a full-time basis.
2010 Despite missing all of 2008 with a torn hip labrum, Vargas was included in the mammoth December, '08 three-team trade among the Mets, Indians, and Mariners. He failed to make the club out of spring training and spent the rest of the season memorizing the countryside along I-5 between Seattle and Tacoma from the window of his car as he was summoned (and returned) on three occasions. Vargas wasn't very successful as a starter (just three quality starts), but did pitch decently in a smattering of relief appearances. He'll head into spring training as one of several not terribly appealing choices for the back end of the Mariners' rotation.
2009 Jason Vargas missed all of last season with a hip injury, but came back to pitch in the Arizona Fall League, enough to earn him a ticket to Seattle as part of the Putz swap; he'll likely be tried as a reliever.
2008 Vargas was a big surprise for the Marlins in 2005, not only because he reached the majors, but because he pitched pretty well once he got there. Since then, he's done very little. Scouts never trusted his stuff much in the first place. He's one of those lefty battlers who throws strikes and changes speeds and keeps guys off balance, but, in the end, he's just not fooling enough hitters.
2007 Even though the Marlins had a really nice date with him in 2005, Vargas found himself buried in the pitching staff`s Little Black Book last year. So, whatever, he totally didn`t need them, and if Florida did decide to call, he`d let it ring a few times before picking so as not to seem desperate. So what if he had a little walk trouble this year? Do you break up with someone over a few extra walks? Do you? And don`t give him the whole `it`s not you, it`s us; we just need more time to think` thing. He totally tried to be himself last year, and if he came off as something other than what he was, then so what? That`s not his fault, right? The Mets called and asked for him by name, so he`s with them now. Only when the Marlins finally come to town, it`s going to be, like, so awkward.
2006 The Marlins drafted Vargas in the 2nd round of the 2004 draft--with Randy Velarde hanging on his family tree, they just knew he had to be good. In Florida`s book, Triple-A is for wimps, so like Kensing and Olsen, Vargas skipped right from Carolina to the bigs. For a naif, Vargas did well, showing no obvious weaknesses with his fastball-slider-change combo. Vargas is among the reasons that Marlins fans--be they in Miami, Portland, or Vegas--can still be excited to go to the park.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think the rotation will be opening day next year for the Royals?
(Alex from Madison, WI)
Jason Vargas, Danny Duffy, Yordano Ventura, Jeremy Guthrie and Johnny Free Agent. (Andy McCullough)
2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who's the best hitting pitcher on this team?
(Why Touki from Arizona)
It may well be Jason Vargas. I am sure James Shields thinks it is James Shields. (Andy McCullough)
2014-08-29 12:00:00 (link to chat)So Jason Vargas is not the human garbage monster that some KC faithful painted him to be afterall. Weird, huh?
(IAMCHRISTOPHER from philly)
Correct. Upside and velocity are sexy and Vargas doesn't have either. He does know how to pitch and he's fairly reliable. Those are good qualities to have from a guy who needn't be your best or second-best starter. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-04-03 19:30:00 (link to chat)I am glad that we have touched your musical side Mr. Goldstein. So now I would like to ask how you feel about Varg as an artist and as a person. He is very polarizing and I want to know how he makes you feel.
(Trevor Bauer from New York)
I am a big fan of Jason Vargas and think both he and GMDM were unfairly maligned following the announcement of that deal. Agree with the sentiment that his changeup borders on art. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-03-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm not a fan of either team, but who wins an Angels/Dodgers World Series?
(Alex from Anaheim)
Do the Angels have the pitching to get to the Series? Weaver, Wilson, Blanton, Jason Vargas and Tommy Hunter? I guess if they're in the Series they had enough pitching to get there though. So I'll take the Angels! (Matthew Kory)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)I offered Starlin Castro, Ian Kennedy, Glen Perkins and Gary Brown for Adam Jones, Billy Hamilton, and Michael Pineda in 20-team dynasty. The leagues uses LF/CF/RF over OF, and has deep pitching requirements. The manager I proposed this to has McCutchen in CF, Jones is his DH. He has nobody at SS currently (my backup is Segura). He proposes back Robinson Cano, Starlin Castro, and Ian Kennedy for Adam Jones, Neil Walker, Jason Vargas, and Michael Pineda. I'm not off my game when I say this guy is one suit short of a full deck, am I?
(Louis from Glendale)
I'd trade one of my kids before I traded away Billy Hamilton in a league. For him to take Hamilton out of the deal and ask you to throw in Cano is rather entertaining. Who does he think you are, Jeff Loria? (Jason Collette)
2012-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)What in God's name is wrong with Jason Vargas?
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
Doesn't have great size or stuff, so if he misses up in the zone he will get punished. (Jason Parks)
2012-06-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Player most likely to be traded at the deadline?
(Flotsam from Grimwood )
Jason Vargas. He isn’t glamorous, but he can give a team 30-plus starts a season with close to 20 of those being deemed quality. Add in the M’s pitching depth and that Vargas qualifies for free agency after next season, and I cannot envision him being on Seattle’s roster on August 1. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Many of the Daily Hit List teams given a 0.0% chance of making the playoffs have not yet accepted their fate. If all of the July trades need to come from the Cubs, Twins, Padres and Royals, it seems like there will be slim pickings for your transactions page. In chronological order, please list the next 5 teams you expect to awake from their silly dreams of greatness.
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
Tough question. I'll offer my list in order of trade likelihood, with the top of the list consisting of teams that I wouldn't be shocked if they made a "sell" move today:

1. Cubs - Trading whatever veterans they can is a no brainer.
2. Padres - I don't still don't believe Carlos Quentin is there for the long haul.
3. Astros - I think they're going to ride this run of decency out jut a bit longer.
4. Athletics - What they'll trade is a more interesting question that if they'll trade.
5. Mariners - I wouldn't be shocked if Jason Vargas gets dealt before the deadline. (R.J. Anderson)

PITCHf/x Pitcher Profile

Although he has not thrown an MLB pitch in 2016, Jason Vargas threw 18,259 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2009 and 2015, including pitches thrown in the MLB Regular Season, the MLB Postseason and Spring Training.
