2013 Unsatisfied with Turnerís preparedness for a playoff run, the Tigers sent their top pitching prospect to Miami, and the 21-year-old fared well down the stretch. One cause for concern, however, is Turnerís middling strikeout rate, an Achilles heel that would be forgivable based on his youth if it weren't one that has followed him throughout his professional career. Turner has an array of quality pitches, but no single offering that consistently grades out above 60 on the 20-80 scouting scale, so heíll always be somewhat reliant on deception and guile. That still makes Turner a solid mid-rotation starter, but scouts who previously thought he might grow into an ace are unlikely to see those lofty hopes fulfilled.
2012 The future is now for Turner, Detroitís top pitching prospect. Never shy about challenging their young arms, the Tigers watched Turner more than hold his own last year as a 20-year-old in Double-A, and tapped him for three starts in the big leagues. He has smooth mechanics and a prototypical power pitcherís body and repertoire: a fastball that touches 95, a sharp curve he can throw for strikes, and a usable changeup that could be the key to his future. Turnerís strikeout rate is a little lower than youíd expect from a young flamethrower, but so is his walk rate, which is likely a better harbinger of his future. Heíll audition for the fifth starter position this spring, and if he stays healthy he can become Rick Porcello with more punchouts. That's even better than it sounds.
2011 Teenage starters in the Florida State League generally fall into one of two categories: five-star prospect, or Tigers prospect. Turner is both, the jewel of a Detroit system never afraid to challenge their best young arms with difficult assignments. The consensus top high-school pitcher in the 2009 draft, Turner is a classic power starter with a heavy mid-90s fastball, solid curveball, and improving changeup. Unlike most debuting young flamethrowers, he avoided walks with aplomb and commanded his fastball exceptionally well, while scouts think his curve could eventually rival anyoneís. In short, he could be a behemoth, and if heís successful in the upper minors as a 20-year-old, itís not crazy to think he could help the Tigers bullpen down the stretch.
2010 Turner was perhaps the top high school arm in the 2009 draft; the Tigers took him with the ninth pick overall and signed him at the deadline with a major-league deal and a $4.7 million bonus. He is the very model of a modern major-league pick: big, mechanically sound, and in possession of excellent stuff led by a fastball that goes as high as 98 mph, a good curve, and a change. He gets favorably compared to Justin Verlander, and you may recall Verlander reached the majors in his pro debut season.
