2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Paul, please list a few pitchers that could have that Kris Medlen like run in the 2nd half. And maybe some bullpen arms that if they move into a starting role, could have real value in mixed leagues. Oh and hello Curtis!
(andtinez from Houston)
Franklin Morales (Rubby or Webster, too, but neither is currently in their pen) and Tony Cingrani (obv, but he fits the model now) are currently in pens. Guys who could just make a big run who aren't currently in a rotation: Erasmo Ramirez, Trevor Rosenthal (prob more 2014 if he's gonna be an SP again), Alex Colome, and Tim Stauffer. http://pauls.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/hiandrew.jpg (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)How long does Josh Byrnes wait before he takes steps to fix his rotation?
(Gregorio from Londres)
Hi Gregorio, thanks for the question. The biggest problem Byrnes faces is that there isn't any real way to fix the rotation. Edwin Jackson, Shaun Marcum, and the rest all signed elsewhere, leaving the Padres with Jason Marquis. At some point maybe Cory Luebke, Tim Stauffer, and Robbie Erlin can help, but not now. (Geoff Young)
2012-09-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)In your eyes, which teams took the best strides towards future success in 2012? Can any make a surprise run at a division or wild card spot in 2013?
(Steve from New York, NY)
The Orioles are the obvious answer in the AL, and even if they don't make it this year, they should hang around in 2013, with Manny Machado benefitting from the experience and Dylan Bundy topping the rotation. Zach Britton's health and effectiveness will be a big factor.

In the NL, I'm probably a year too soon with this, but don't sleep on the Padres. They've shown flashes over the past few weeks, and there's a lot of talent both on the major-league team and coming up through the pipeline, not to mention Cory Luebke and Tim Stauffer, who should help the rotation. It's an increasingly competitive division, but a couple of breakout seasons could pave the way for a second-place finish and a shot at one of the wild-card spots. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-02-23 11:00:00 (link to chat)What do you see for Tim Stauffer in 2012? I play in a deep mixed league and am on the fence on whether to keep him. Any reason to think his strikeout rate will improve?
(Matt from Madison, WI)
I expect more of the same from Stauffer. Petco Park will help his ERA. Hopefully now that he's gotten a full year of starting under his belt, he won't hit the wall again like he did at the end of 2011. Anything is possible, but I can't think of a reason why his strikeout rate might jump. (Geoff Young)
2011-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any real way to try to improve in the wins category?
(Andrew from Las Vegas)
Well, analysts often preach “don’t chase wins,” which may seem to make sense when you consider how volatile the category is. Still, as long as you understand that there is a lot of variance in the wins category and are ok with that, you’re going to be more successful in the long-run by accounting for them in your analysis of a pitcher as opposed to ignoring them completely, as some suggest. If you read my article from a couple weeks ago where I talk about Tim Stauffer (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=14190), you’ll see a good way of figuring out a pitcher’s expected win total. This is actually a pretty good topic, and I think I’ll form an article around it for Thursday. (Derek Carty)
2011-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any chance of Tim Stauffer earning a spot in the Padres rotation and what are your expectations if he does make it ?
(Spirou from Montreal)
Outside shot, but it's hard to see a ceiling beyond that back of the rotation role. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-06-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)In my very deep, 14 team mixed league I'm in need of some pop, and have a day to put in a claim on Stanton (thankfully I have $ to do so). The question is, my pitching staff is very young & volatile, which of these 4 guys would you recommend dropping: W. Davis, Ely, C. Richard, W. LeBlanc? I'm leaning Wade Davis fwiw...
(Andy from Chicago)
I can see Davis getting pushed out by Hellickson. Wade LeBlanc had a few iffy starts, but he's in the NL with Petco, and probably won't get bumped by Tim Stauffer if he can keep it up. (Marc Normandin)
2010-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why did I spend 5% of my tiny budget on Jerry Hairston when my starting rotation could use another full pitcher's worth of not-sucky innings?
(Jed Hoyer from Beautiful Downtown San Diego)
Because replacing Wade LeBlanc or Tim Stauffer is not going to win the NL West, and a guy like Hairston has his uses. Plus, with Jerry and Scott on the same club, I hope to see some kind of super Hairston, like a Voltron Hairston that's capable of playing defense and hitting well but counts as two roster spots. (Marc Normandin)
