Are you aware of any analysis of catchers and third strike foul tips? Does anyone even keep track of them? Are such plays included in ratings of catchers' defense? (Christopher from Nashville) | As long as the years past have been a crawl towards an indefinite horizon, beyond which some unquantified respectability is supposed to be, I could see Buck Showalter getting this team into the range of 78-82 wins next year. I don't expect that's going to lead to a ticker-tape parade, and I don't know if there's a way to leverage this group into a real contender, but I'd take their late-season finish seriously. The culture in Pittsburgh is, understandably, not one of winning, and I think they need a manager who can remind them that they need to play for their jobs every single day. (Joe Torre from The Unemployment Line) | I think it does increase buzz but what it really does is increase credibility. The Orioles are a great case in point. When they hired Buck Showalter, the franchise was suddenly relevant again and the Orioles players I talked to a few weeks after the hiring all said the clubhouse atmosphere changed immediately and became much more professional. There's just not that many catchers his size, and Baltimore hasn't shown much ability to actually grow and develop hitters. Without knowing the tasty (or not so) they could have had in return, please comment on the logic of holding in this situation. (Jay from Madison) | Perhaps in part to leave Buck Showalter with all of the club's better pieces still on the board, especially if there weren't any suitors making offers Andy MacPhail couldn't refuse. Change is inevitable, but giving time and direct experience with the players to a new skipper with as much experience as Showalter does in recasting a franchise doesn't seem like such a bad idea to me. If nobody was handing out primo goodies--and let's face it, if the best prospects moved at the deadline were Dan Hudson and Tim Collins, not many people were--standing pat with a pair of under-control veterans was defensible. (Drungo from SoMd) | You know, I don't spend a lot of time worrying about manager hirings because it's so hard to predict the impact that a manager will have on a team. I am not saying I don't think managers can have a big influence on a team, I'm just saying it has to be the right combination of factors between the personalities, and that's not something you can really know in advance without very detailed knowledge about the situation. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say the Orioles will slowly continue to improve over at least the next two years. (Tommy Bennett) |

I know they won't always be this bad, but realistically, when is the earliest they could contend? Last year pundits thought it was 2011/2012, but now that seems ridiculous. Will I have to wait until a salary cap is implemented or Angelos sells the team? (Dan from Maryland) | This has been pretty much a lost year, as just about all of the key youngsters on whom the Orioles' future hinges has taken a step backwards - Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman... In retrospect, I think the team waited too long to pull the plug on Dave Trembley, because the situation has just festered, but keep in mind the Orioles' poor standing also has to do with the fact that the other four teams in the division are especially strong; the O's are 8-25 (.242) against them, which is worse than the 1962 Mets' pace.
In terms of contention, I think a lot depends upon whom they hire as a manager. Buck Showalter might be able to get them playing respectable baseball by sometime next year, but contention will take some front office smarts, and I'm not sure the guy who signed Garrett Atkins need apply.
