2013 The window of opportunity may be closing for Justin Sellers, who missed the rest of 2012 with a back injury after a mid-May tumble into the stands to catch a foul ball.
2012 A sixth-round 2005 pick by the A's, Sellers didn't look like more than organizational fodder by the time he wound up with the Dodgers by way of the Cubs in the spring of 2009. Augmenting strong defense and good on-base skills with an altitude-induced breakout at Albuquerque in 2010, he wound up on the big club's radar. Upon repeating the feat in 2011, he was called up in mid-August once Dee Gordon went on the disabled list. After filling in at shortstop for three weeks, he shared second base duties in September, but the more exposure he got, the worse he hit, particularly against righties (.172/.250/.269 in 105 PA). He could still carve out a career as a utilityman.
2011 A 2005 sixth-round pick by the A's, Justin Sellers is an undersized (5-foot-10) shortstop with a strong defensive reputation and good on-base skills. He showed unprecedented pop at Albuquerque—unprecedented for him, but hardly for that hitter-friendly environment—and could have a future as a utilityman.
2008 Justin Sellers is a nifty little shortstop with no single overwhelming skill, but he can defend the position well and sometimes that's enough.
2007 Scouts like everything about Sellers but his size; though five-foot-ten isn`t terribly small for a shortstop, Sellers` frame isn`t expected to carry much more weight as he matures than his listed 160 pounds. He`s regarded as an excellent defender and will have to continue to earn that reputation on the field while improving his hitting in order to move through the system.
