2013 The Giants picked up Scutaro in a small deal with the Rockies a few days before the non-waiver trade deadline, and his outstanding play earned him the half-joking nickname "Blockbuster" from his teammates. Scutaro initially filled in for an injured Sandoval at third base before settling in as the team's everyday second baseman. He provided a spark to the lineup by using a high contact rateóthe highest among players who saw more than 1,000 pitchesóto rope line drives. He carried his sizzling regular-season finish into the playoffs, where he earned NLCS MVP honors, and closed the show by driving in the game-winning run of Game Four of the World Series.
2012 Scutaro just wrapped up the most productive two-year stretch at short for the Red Sox since the days of Nomar Garciaparra: the nearly six wins Scutaro produced from 2010-2011 outnumber the total value of Sox shortstops from post-Nomar 2004 through 2009. Orlando Cabrera, Edgar Renteria, Julio Lugo, Alex Gonzalez, and Nick Green (yes, that Nick Green) combined for 5.5 WARP over 2,897 plate appearances before Scutaro came to town on a two-year, $12.5 million deal. With his 2012 option picked up, he has one more chance to add to that total.
2011 Scutaro (or Scooter Rowe, if one believes NESN's closed captioning) dropped to his previous offensive levels, but there was more to his season than the stat line. Scutaro played with a pinched nerve and subsequently a rotator-cuff injury for most of the second half. He shifted to second base once an MRI revealed the tears, which allowed him to use his wrist for throws rather than his arm. Maladies aside, Scutaro was right there with the AL's premier shortstops and plugged a half-decade-long hole for Boston, nearly matching the combined WARP output of the starters in those years in a single season. The Venezuelan product had an isolated power of .131 with the use of one arm, as opposed to his .105 ISO with two working appendages, but despite his shorthanded success, Boston's front office is not convinced that missing limbs are the new market inefficiency.
2010 Scutaro is an easy player to root for. An undersized late-bloomer, he doesnít excel at any particular facet of the game, but he does almost everything well. Heís a solid defensive shortstop with a bit of speed, a ton of hustle, and a good plate approach that makes him more valuable than your typical hacktastic scrappy infielder. Though he has started the majority of his teamsí games every year for the last six years, 2009 was the first season that he entered with a job as a major-league starter, and he ran with it, setting career highs in nearly every offensive category, and not just because of the added playing time. Scutaro also set career highs in all three slash stats and drew more walks than strikeouts for the first time. Those walks will be the key to his continued success in Boston, where heís a nice fit as a budget solution to the Red Soxís perennial shortstop problem.
2009 Scutaro passed through three organizations before getting his first real shot in the majors at the age of 28, but heís made a nice little career for himself since. A splendid fielder, he has enough patience at the plate to make himself an acceptable middle-infield option despite a lack of power. Last year, he set career highs in games and PAs while bouncing between filling in for Rolen at third, platooning with Inglett at second, and ultimately taking over the bulk of the shortstop duties. As we go to press, heís penciled in as the starter at that last position. The Jays could do worse.
2008 Every year it's the same: Scutaro enters the year as a backup infielder, somebody, usually Bobby Crosby, suffers some kind of big injury that makes Scutaro an everyday player, and Scutaro performs well enough that nobody notices the change (Crosby 2005-7: .243/.307/.377; Scutaro 2005-7: .257/.331/.384). This year he'll do it for the Blue Jays, as Oakland dealt him to Toronto in the offseason for a pair of fringy minor league arms on the assumption that Donnie Murphy can turn the same trick at a cheaper price.
2007 At 30, Scutaro finally gave the A`s the .350 on-base percentage they`d been expecting when they signed him out of the Mets organization as a six-year free agent three years ago. Just in time, too--with Ellis and Crosby limping through the season, the A`s wouldn`t have won the West without Scooter. With some big hits in the A`s Division Series win against the Twins, he got into the running for the Scrappiest Player Alive award, if only temporarily; with the A`s getting swept by the Tigers, and the Cardinals making their improbable run, David Eckstein retained his title with a World Series knockout.
2006 A what-you-see-is-what-you-get guy, Scooter has some pretty clear edges over a waiver-bait middle infielder, but just as clearly was put on Earth to be a reserve.
2005 Scooter finally got his break, and he did do good stuff, mostly in the field, lacing 30-plus doubles. But on this team, his problems with working counts or getting on base stand out, and he has nothing like the hold over the organization that Ellis seems to command. He'll fight for a utility role, but if he loses, he'll be waiver bait, and given his price tag, experience, and performance, he won't make it through to Sacramento when he's outrighted.
2003 The Brewers and Indians didnít appreciate him, but it looks like the Mets do. They flat out know heís a ballplayer. Maybe it was the success with Joe McEwing, but a guy who never says die at the plate and proves willing to move around the diamond is a far better option as a utility infielder than somebody like Jorge Velandia. Scutaro would be an improvement over at least a half dozen teamsí starters at second.
2002 If thereís a guy primed to be the next Frankie Menechino, itís Scutaro. He already has more than three years of experience in the International League, he has solid on-base skills, and heís picking up power as he matures. He should have been starting at second base and hitting at the top of the order after Belliard broke down. He was finally added to the 40-man roster after the season, about three months too late to do the 2001 Brewers any good.
2001 Marcos Scutaro was acquired from Cleveland in the Sexson deal for reasons that arenít readily apparent. Itís not that he isnít a good player--heís a decent all-around second baseman and is young enough to get a little better. But he doesnít project as the type of player who has a reasonable chance of playing regularly for the Brewers in the future. Perhaps the club was just hedging its bets in case Belliardís back goes haywire again.
2000 There are about a dozen major-league teams that wish they could boast a middle infield as good as Scutaro and Enrique Wilson. Both have been All-Stars at their positions in the minors, and Scutaro has some sock, good speed and a good glove. He also desperately needs to be traded before he has to start worrying about whether heíll have his Buffalo number retired during the same ceremony as Alex Ramirez and Tom Prince.
1998 Nothing special so far, but young enough to get better and showing improvement over time. Has OK power for a second baseman and can steal a base. His defense is not so hot yet and he doesnít walk enough. At the least, has a better future than Duane Kuiper.

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you make of Josh Rutledge at this point? Is his being sent down an indication that he's never going be a starter again, or an opportunity for him to get playing time and return in a significant role?
(gerrybraun from San Diego)
He's had a bizarre career arc. When he first came up, the expectation was he'd be a Marco Scutaro type. Then he went on that power surge and he hasn't been good since. He's a second baseman more than a shortstop, so he's gotta hit to stick. I'm not optimistic he'll regain his former luster. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-12-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any chance San Francisco looks to Jeff Keppinger to fill the hole at 2B if they are unable to re-sign Marco Scutaro?
(CoachFish35 from SoCal)
A lot of Marco Scutaro- and Jeff Keppinger-related questions in the queue, so I'll kill all of those birds with CoachFish35's stone. As I said earlier in the chat, I think the Giants will end up re-signing Scutaro, but I'm not sure about Keppinger as a fallback. Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reported earlier this morning that the Yankees are in hot pursuit of Keppinger, and I think he fits better in a platoon/utility role than as an everyday second baseman.

One name to keep an eye on as an alternative for the Giants is Hiroyuki Nakajima. The SF Chronicle' John Shea tweeted yesterday that the Giants are in contact with his representatives in case Scutaro heads elsewhere: https://twitter.com/JohnSheaHey/status/275761688098271232. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-12-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Marco Scutaro ends up resigning with the Giants?
(fish filet from SF)
I'll use this to provide an update from Scutaro, courtesy of Buster Olney: https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/276054769880145920. He reiterated that the Giants are still the favorites, and if the bidding has in fact reached three years, $24 million, I'd expect a decision to come soon. (Daniel Rathman)
2009-12-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)It seems that even in the worst non injury scenario as oar as performance is concerned Scutaro is destined to be the Red Sox's best, or at least most steady all around SS since Nomar, how much of a premium will the Sox be paying for him since their leverage seems limited, and how much does this reflect on the Yankees luck with a steady and durable Jeter in comparison?
(Keith C from Naugatuck, CT)
I don't think the Sox will be paying a premium. Even if he's going to be good, he's still Marco Scutaro.

As for part two, the Red Sox have won more World Series since Nomar was traded than the Yanks have with Jeter during the same time period. That doesn't really mean anything, I just wanted to say it, so please no Jeter Defense Force reactions, thanks. (Marc Normandin)
2009-12-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why shouldn't the Yanks overpay Scutaro to be their utility just to do harm to the Sox? Scutaro gets to play all over the field, get overpaid (say $4-5 a year), and the chance at a ring. If you noticed a team without a 2B going into the end of your draft next year, you'd surely take Kendrick and Weeks before he could. I know I would.
(Wade from Mass)
Because it's Marco Scutaro, and they have their own needs they need to fill. I'm not saying the Sox/Yanks never purposely pluck players from the others clutches just to be that way, but I think the Yanks have their own things to consider before they start messing with Boston's plans. (Marc Normandin)
2009-09-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)If you were in charge of the Blue Jays, what would be the 3 best moves you could make this winter?
(dtwhite from Toronto)
1) Trade Halladay for a Teixeira package, built around the best shortstop I can get.

2) Convince the Mets to take Vernon Wells for no talent back.

3) Avoid the temptation to sign Marco Scutaro to a three-year deal. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-30 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi John. Thanks for answering my question. Do you think Toronto is going to move Marco Scutaro?
(Kent from MN)
Only if they get something for him because there is a school of thought in the organization that they would like to re-sign him to a multi-year deal. (John Perrotto)
2009-05-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)One subject that nearly everone has been silent about, sort of like the unspoken rule about not mentioning a no-hitter in progress, is AARON HILL. And yes the capitals are warranted by now no?
(WilliamWilde from Boston, MA)
Hill's the guy off to a hot start in the Jays' lineup worth getting excited about, not simply because of the back story of coming back from his concussion, but because he looked good before the injury, and we can get excited about what he might grow up to be. (Insert standard observations that Lyle Overbay and Marco Scutaro will go back to being Lyle Overbay and Marco Scutaro here.) (Christina Kahrl)
