BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Sanchez can sometimes make hitters look silly with his mid-90s fastball and slow curve, but he continues to be plagued by awful control. Last year he walked as many batters as he whiffed in his midsummer big-league stint, and was nearly as wild down in Memphis. Sanchez has stuff that can play in high-leverage innings, but if he doesnít learn to harness it soon, heíll never have a career.
2012 After battling unsuccessfully for a spot in the Cardinals bullpen until the last day of spring training, Sanchez got the call to the majors in mid-April when Bryan Augenstein and Brian Tallet were injured. The Venezuelan native impressed, striking out 33 in 28 2/3 innings and recording five saves while closer Ryan Franklin struggled. Shut down with a right-shoulder strain in mid-June, Sanchez did not return until late September, when he struck out two in a key comeback victory in Houston. His mid- to upper-90s fastball and nasty slider should have a place in the bullpen for the foreseeable future.
2011 A rail-thin Venezuelan reliever, Sanchez took another giant step toward his future in the Cardinals' bullpen by continuing to impress during a full year in the high minors. Sanchez lives by his fastball, a heavy mid-90s load that generates plenty of ground balls, and a slider that misses bats. He continues to strike out more than a batter per inning, and while his walk rate climbed during his late-season trip to Triple-A, itís hardly high in a power-reliever-prospect kind of way. Only 22, Sanchez is almost ready to lend another power arm to the Cardinals' pen.
2010 Slight Venezuelan Eduardo Sanchez has thrived by backing people off the plate and generating scads of ground balls.

2012-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who are some prospects at RP that you like (are there any)?
(McPaine from St. Paul)
There's rarely such a thing as a RP "prospect." The good pitching prospects generally start out in the rotation, and if they can't hack it, they move into the bullpen. That said, there are certainly some relievers in Triple-A that could prove valuable to an AL or NL-only team. Don't count on them for saves anytime soon, but they could provide good ratios. A few off the top of my head: Eduardo Sanchez was just recalled by St. Louis and has good stuff. Juan Abreu is interesting in Houston if he can improve his control. I like Zach Putnam for Colorado. Nick Hagadone's been up and down for Cleveland this year. Jose Ceda is out for 2012 (Tommy John) but is interesting next year, perhaps even getting in the saves mix at some point. (Derek Carty)
2011-04-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you see for Eduardo Sanchez in 2012? Closer gig?
(Bill from Canada)
Yes, but only IF he keeps throwing strikes. (Kevin Goldstein)
