2013 Rzepczynski’s job in St. Louis last year was to be a LOOGY. But you can’t be a Lefty One-Out Guy if you don’t get that one guy out, as was true of "Scrabble" more often than expected last year. When that occurs, you become more of a LOBBY—a Lefty One-Batter Boy—and your organization feels it necessary to bring in Choate on a multi-year deal to get that one guy out. None of which is necessarily bad for Rzepczynski, as his sinker-slider combination can get righties out too, and by lobbying (intentionally or not) to face more and more varied hitters, he could increase his value.
2012 Part of John Mozeliak’s trade-deadline bullpen makeover, Rzepczynski wields a heavy sinker and still harbors thoughts of working in the starting rotation. Given the crowd in the St. Louis rotation and Scrabble’s success against left-handed hitters—they managed to hit just .163/.256/.221 against him in Toronto and St. Louis in 2011—he’ll probably have to be satisfied with a return to a relief role and the honor of one of the best nicknames in baseball.
2011 Scrabble, Eyechart, Alphabet—call him what you want, but Rzepcynski has to stop giving so many hitters free passes. It’s great that his name is unusual (“Just like it’s spelled,” he must have told countless teachers), and the strikeouts and ground balls are what got him to where he is. The next step, however, is harnessing his control, and it’s as likely to happen next year as never. Rzepczynski enjoyed success in the Arizona Fall League and should get a chance to battle Jesse Litsch and Kyle Drabek for the fifth rotation spot in the spring.
2010 In just his second full professional season after being drafted in the fifth round after four years at the University of California at Riverside, Rzepczynski (pronounced zep-CHIN-ski) skipped over High-A completely and joined the big-league rotation in early July, and didn’t come out until September (after a run of four quality starts) because he had hit his limit of 150 innings for the year. A lefty with a heavy sinker who doesn’t give up much against righties, Rzepczynski has a bit of BABIP correction coming his way, but as PECOTA suggests, he should be a mid-rotation stalwart in 2010 and beyond.
2009 Marc Rzepczynski (pronounced rez-PIN-ski) is a lefty starter with a bowling-ball sinker, a good curve, and a decent change that also sinks, making it nearly impossible for hitters to get the ball in the air off of him.
