BP Annual Player Comments

2011 Randy Ruiz hit two home runs in his hometown of the Bronx in 2009, but in 2010 he was released and caught on in Japan. Playing for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, he hit 12 home runs in 312 plate appearances.
2010 An 11-year minor-league veteran with a career .304/.378/.531 line in the bush leagues and a positive performance-enhancing drug test on his record, Ruiz finally got a long major-league look with his ninth organization, doing some late-season crushing for the Jays while briefly pushing Lind into the field. Unfortunately, when you already have a core player who canít play defense like Lind, adding a second one means that someone has to play the field. Baseball doesn't allow you two designated hitters, even in Canada, where they otherwise do some pretty strange things, like putting gravy and cheese curds on their french fries. Lind won that particularly battle, natch, as Ruiz's playing time decreased in September, due not to a drop in production, but to the Jaysí need to get Lind out of the outfield. Ruiz has little plate judgment and was a huge double-play threat last year, yet he has the pop to benefit a team in a platoon or pinch-hitting role. But as someone both slow and positionless, he's the equivalent of human roster coagulant.
2009 Bronx native Randy Ruiz was born October 19, 1977, the day after Reggie Jackson hit three home runs to close out that season's World Series. Yes, it was a long time ago, but then Ruiz has been in baseball for a long time, joining the professional ranks when the Reds signed him as a non-drafted free agent in 1999. Despite career minor league rates of .302/.369/.524, it took him almost nine years to reach Triple-A. The reason why is simple: if you want to make it to the majors as a clanky first baseman or DH, you'd better hit like Babe freakin' Ruth, and Ruiz falls well short of that standard, principally due to deficiencies in making contact and strike-zone judgment. After releasing Craig Monroe, the Twins gave Ruiz a shot at the right-handed half of the DH platoon. Ruiz was better than Monroe, but still less than might have been hoped. Cut loose after the season, Ruiz made his tenth change of organization, signing a minor league deal with the Blue Jays.
