YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Selected by the Rockies in the 20th round of the 2007 draft, Reynolds has done more than the other 29 players taken that round combined. He is a LOOGY whose slow curve is tough on lefties but who gives up too many hits and homers. Last year he struggled against right-handed batters, who hit him like the 1994 version of Andres Galarraga. Reynolds hadn't shown such vulnerability to righties in the past, but for the second straight season his performance plummeted in the second half. There are six or seven guys in most modern bullpens. Reynolds is one of them.
2012 After his June 6 appearance against San Diego, Reynolds had a 2.20 ERA in 27 appearances and was holding opponents to a .143/.200/.232 line. From that point forward, his ERA ballooned to 4.98, and opponents hit him to the tune of .303/.360/.621 in 46 games. Deployed as a LOOGY, Reynolds struggled against left-handed hitters in 2011. They batted .292/.324/.552 against him and hit six of the 10 homers he allowed. The league also caught up to him two months into the season. Beyond the four-month slump, if Reynolds can't get lefties out, it's hard to envision him having much of a career.
2011 Lefty reliever Matt Reynolds, a late-round pick out of Tennesseeís Austin Peay State in 2007, didnít get out of A-Ball until age 24, but came on strong in his Triple-A debut last year, dominating the strike zone and earning an August call-up to The Show. A big fella with a three-quarter delivery, excellent control, and an effective slider/splitter combo, Reynolds dominates lefties, hangs in against righties, and gives the Rockies a solid, full-inning option from the left side for 2011.
