2002 Rekar was awarded a $1.4-million salary in arbitration last winter, after which everything that could go wrong, did. He pitched halfway decently over the first three months of the season, but nevertheless dropped ten of his first 11 decisions. Every time he took the mound, it seemed that the D-Rays’ hitters turned into Ray Oylers, and their fielders turned into Dave Kingmans. Then Rekar hurt his shoulder, missed a month, and pitched poorly upon his return. Speculation that the club will non-tender him turned into a spring training invitation with the Royals.
2001 While the Devil Rays have shown no signs of developing hitters or an offense, they've done a pretty good job of building pitching staffs using free talent. Take Bryan Rekar. They diddled around with him at the start of the season, but once they dropped him into the rotation in May, he pitched well. Like Lopez, his peripherals are less-than-outstanding, but the price is right. Let's just say that these two guys won't be outpitched by the Mets' $18-million duo of Kevin Appier and Rick Reed.
2000 Rekar appears to be one of the first identified casualties of an assignment to Planet Coors. First he lost his confidence, then his control. He can still get Triple-A batters out, but when promoted, he's taterrific.
1999 Good news, Bryan, you don't have to pitch in Coors Field anymore. Even if Tropicana Field is a "joke," to use TB pitchers' favorite adjective, it has to beat trying to throwing a curve in thin air. It's tough to judge this season; he strained his back in the spring, then his shoulder while on rehab, and didn't make it to the club until the All-Star break. A good bet to improve next season, if healthy. Experienced shoulder stiffness in winter ball.
1998 Could be at the end of the line already. Looked good only two years ago, but his decline continued in ’97. As in the previous year, he pitched OK if not spectacularly at Triple-A, then bombed in the majors, this time getting only two starts before he was sent back down. Picked in the Expansion Draft by Arizona.
1997 Had a promising future at one point, but appears to have lost the strike zone in 1996. Probably just a one-year aberration, but you never know with that particular affliction.
