2007 The Sox deserve credit for working around some terrible declines in the bullpen. Cliff Politte, Dustin Hermanson, and Neal Cotts combined for 53.3 Adjusted Runs Prevented (ARP) in 2005, but slumped to -21.0 in 2006, a decline which amounts to seven or eight fewer wins. Politte was the largest part of the problem, going from the fourth-best reliever in baseball in 2005 (25.1 ARP), to the second worst in 2006 (-16.1 ARP). Rather than sit on their hands, the Sox almost completely turned the bullpen over by midseason, bringing in Mike MacDougal and David Riske to complement the offseason acquisition of Matt Thornton. For his part, Politte was released in July, and had rotator cuff surgery in August. He`ll get a look somewhere if his arm heals up, but having never been a favorite of baseball people, he might need to settle for a minor league deal.
2006 It`s hard to remember three guys in the same bullpen who got more out of average peripherals than Politte, Neal Cotts, and Dustin Hermanson. Opponents hit just .154/.244/.292 against Politte with men on base last season, which explains the low ERA. Those three pitchers made a collective $3.3 million last season, so we should give Don Cooper and Kenny Williams their due. The lesson that any number of viable middle relievers meet the test for `freely-available talent` is something the GM on the other side of town would do well to understand.
2005 Politte has been an above-average reliever in three of his four full major league seasons, but had the misfortune to pick the bad one to coincide with his trial as a closer in Toronto in 2003. The Blue Jays' decision to non-tender him was not a case of cold feet so much as a well-reasoned fear that the 12 saves he'd racked up might have inflated his price in arbitration. In any event, he's back in his customary role now, which is exactly halfway along the spectrum between chief fireman and mop-up gimp. Politte is 5'11" in the same sense that Charles Barkley is 6'8".
2003 Baseball men have been using Politte’s height (5˘9=) against him his whole career. The Blue Jays used it to their advantage, stealing him from the Phillies when they unloaded Dan Plesac. Politte quickly emerged as the team’s best reliever, mixing blazing mid-90s heat with a hard slider and nifty changeup. He’ll probably be the closer this year, though Tosca should use him as game situations dictate rather than exclusively in the ninth inning, something Escobar complained about vehemently when they tried it with him.
2002 Politte shares the same tortured history of many Phillies, with a long record of freak injuries interrupting periods of effectiveness. He throws hard, has good control, and his arm is in good shape. Nelson Figueroa’s spot can be had in 2002, so Politte probably won’t spend the whole season in the bullpen if he can stay off of the DL.
2001 Cliff Politte is now out of options, which is unfortunate since he just started adding a change-up to his mix of pitches, and he needs more time to polish it. He did well in eight major-league starts last year, but batters may begin to figure him out soon; without that extra pitch, he could be in trouble.
2000 If his career is to be salvaged, the Phillies need to figure out what his role will be, send him to Triple-A to work on it and leave him there. He’s been jerked back and forth between the minors and the majors, as well as between starting and short relief. This is not the ideal plan for developing a pitcher.
1999 Clearly wasn’t ready, but you can see why people make the comparisons to Scott Bankhead: a short righty who can throw 90 and who only drops to 85 on his slider. Still, it was impressive that he got to beat out Steve Ontiveros; LaRussa doesn’t give up on an ex-A unless compelled. Traded to the Phillies in the Bottalico deal.
1998 Politte is one of those draft-day surprises: he was a 54th-round pick who showed up with a better fastball than anyone saw him throw in high school, to complement a good slider. He was named the top pitcher in the Carolina League in ’97, and the organization’s Pitcher of the Year.
