2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Really M's? What does a brother have to do to get a pink slip these days?
(Chone from Seattle(maybe))
If Figgins is around tomorrow, we have to believe one of two things is true; 1) they have a trade in the works to dump him and at least a fraction of his salary or, 2) He's to Eric Wedge as Bobby Ayala was to Lou Piniella. (Jason A. Churchill)
2010-10-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)As the Cubs took 3 of 4 from the Padres, I couldn't help but wonder if it made Lou Piniella happy to give Bobby Cox a little help getting to the postseason one last time.
(The Flying Bernard from Acton, MA)
I doubt he cares - Lou Piniella was a very competitive person. He's probably happy the Cubs are winning more (I don't know how much attention he's paying - he left the team to attend to some more important things, after all). (Colin Wyers)
2010-07-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Buck Showalter be: a) A key to an O's turnaround b) Lou Piniella in Tampa c) Employed by another team after the O's fiddle while Rome burns.
(Drungo from SoMd)
You know, I don't spend a lot of time worrying about manager hirings because it's so hard to predict the impact that a manager will have on a team. I am not saying I don't think managers can have a big influence on a team, I'm just saying it has to be the right combination of factors between the personalities, and that's not something you can really know in advance without very detailed knowledge about the situation. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say the Orioles will slowly continue to improve over at least the next two years. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-07-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)When Lou Piniella leaves the managing ranks, how will history treat him? Didn't he kind of "quit" on the Devil Rays?
(dianagramr from NYC)
But he dyed his hair, too! C'mon! That's gotta count for something!

Managers aren't remembered for their mediocre years (Joe Torre in St. Louis, anyone?), so I think Sweet Lou will be remembered fondly. (Tommy Bennett)
2009-04-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any sense that if Derrek Lee's neck / health problems persist we may see Jake Fox in Chicago soon?
(go-dills! from Chicago)
Possibly but Lou Piniella like Hoffpauir's bat and I think he would get first crack at first. (John Perrotto)
2008-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Let's talk about the Cubs... not books or these dead, old-time players.
(Quentin from Chicago)
Best team in baseball, I think, though I worry about Kerry Wood biting them in the butt in some tight postseason situation. I give a lot of credit to Lou Piniella for following through on his threat to deemphasize Fukudome a bit if he continued to struggle. Maybe I'm too used to years of Joe Torre's "It will all work out" approach to slumps, but I get impressed when a manager actually does something even vaguely assertive/proactive. (Steven Goldman)
2008-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Lou Piniella: Man of destiny or medieval griffin?
(Gordon from Dallas)
Can't he be like Jack McKeon, and both at the same time? (Christina Kahrl)
2008-06-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Hi John, have you heard if any other teams are interested in Rich Hill? I am curious if his trade value is higher or lower than Sean Marshall's. Thanks.
(Guancous from Silver Spring, MD)
I think a small-market club would be perfect for Hill. He's got an awful lot of talent but it's clear that he has lost the faith of Lou Piniella. Put him in a low-pressure environment and he could easily put his career back together. Yes, I think Hill has more value than Marshall simply because he has a higher ceiling, though I also think Marshall has a chance to be a good major-league starter. (John Perrotto)
2008-06-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)How strange is the saga of Rich Hill this season? While perhaps not unprecedented, this whole situation just seems like one of the more bizarre collapses I can ever recall a successful starting pitcher experiencing.
(Brent from Raleigh)
It's very strange. Again, Lou Piniella is a demanding manager and some guys get psyched out by him. I think Rich Hill is still a very good bet to have a good career. He just needs to get in a differet environment. (John Perrotto)
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)Let's go worst-case scenario and say Big Z is out for the year. Should the Cubs trade for A.J. Burnett (or whoever) or give Hill and/or Marshall another shot?
(Stephen from Louisville)
Rich Hill is something like the 25th-best starter in the National League. I have no idea what he did to Lou Piniella, but he can take Zambrano's place with minimal loss in value. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-06-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Lou Piniella has expressed a plan to rotate rest for his regulars. Has he said the same for Marmol and Wood who have eached pitched a lot in the last month?
(Tom from Arkadelphia)
Hi Tom, Lou would like to give Marmol more rest in particular. He's a guy who has been used a lot lately with all the close games the Cubs have played. Ideally, Carlos could pitch in about 130 games, but we all know that won't work! (Len Kasper)
2008-05-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Center field for the Cubs has been a big blank all season. Who should fill it?
(Stephen from Louisville)
Felix Pie, whose handling is a black mark on the stellar career of Lou Piniella. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-03-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is going to end up closing for the Cubs? The BP depth charts seem as clueless as I am...Wood? Marmol? Howry? Dempster?
(mikeduin from Seattle)
I go to the depth charts for advice at this time of year, so the real answer is only in Lou Piniella's head. At least that's not as scary of a thought as what's going on inside Dusty's noggin. You might want to get your closer elsewhere if there is no clear-cut choice, and then use the Cubs situation as your midseason closer acquisition. (Marc Normandin)
2008-02-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Lou Piniella's lineup(as reported on cubs.com), soriano, theriot, lee, ramirez, fukudome, derosa, soto, pie. PECOTA's two lowest obps in the group= soriano and theriot. Why sign a left handed hitting guy to play RF and get on base if you are going to waste it this way?
(Mike from Chicago)
See earlier answer about "the engine of baseball" and whether managers really understand it.

Lineups supposedly don't matter than much, but I just can't see how the above doesn't just kill. If that's what Piniella is doing, it increases the Cubs' need for Roberts. (Joe Sheehan)
