2013 Signed by Cincinnati in July after the Nationals released him from their Triple-A club, Paul is a prototypical reserve outfielder. He is best on the corners but can play center in a pinch. He has poor plate discipline and is useless against left-handers. He runs well but is not an efficient basestealer. Paul wasn't the worst outfielder named Xavier to be released by the Nats last July, so there's that.
2012 Walk around PNC Park for more than an hour and you are bound to run into a former Dodgers prospect, an outfield tweener, or a combination thereof—like Paul. Besides a proficiency for making outs against lefties (he reached base four times in 29 plate appearances), Paul did not show much in 2011 after the Pirates grabbed him off waivers. He'll try to catch on as outfield depth for the Nationals.
2011 The Dodgers' most advanced outfield prospect coming into the year, Paul is nonetheless a classic tweener with neither the bat nor glove to hold down a regular job. After missing most of 2009 due to a staph infection in his knee and a broken ankle, he spent 2010 yo-yoing between Albuquerque, where he raked, and Los Angeles, where he did little more but fill space during Manny Ramirez's absences. His late season was painful in more ways than one: he didn't hit enough to be considered a viable alternative once Scott Podsednik arrived (ouch), and he lost out on a September call up after being shut down in mid-August due to a cervical spine inflammation (double-ouch). Out of options, he'll be part of the cattle call to fill the void in left field.
2010 Paul was the Dodgers' most advanced outfield prospect at the start of the year, and was off to a strong start at Triple-A when he was recalled to fill Manny Ramirez's spot. Alas, Paul's stay in the majors lasted just two weeks, as he was sidelined by a staph infection in his knee which required surgery, then was lost for the year when he crashed into a wall and sustained microfractures in his ankle. When healthy, Paul is a classic tweener, an outfielder who doesn't play strong enough defense to hold down center on a regular basis, and doesn't hit for enough power to play a corner. He'll likely need an injury or a trade elsewhere to make it in 2010.
2009 Paul cut down his strikeouts and, like a silicone showgirl, put up superficially attractive numbers for Las Vegas. The 2003 fourth-rounder is a good athlete whose game doesn’t have major strengths or glaring holes aside from problems hitting lefties. He makes solid contact with a line-drive swing but has yet to translate that into real power, though for what it’s worth he showed more pop away from hitter-friendly Cashman Field (.306/.371/.472) than at home (.326/.385/.454). Paul's arm is considered the system’s best, and he’s got decent speed, but center is a stretch for him, and he’ll have to be more productive to hold down a corner job on a first-division club. Right now, he looks like a Future Fourth Outfielder of America.
2008 Once thought to be among the team's top ten prospects, this toolsy 2003 fourth-rounder is only now rebounding from his stock's slippage. Relentless tinkering with his swing caused him to struggle at Vero Beach, but he made solid gains upon repeating the level, and barely missed a beat when adapting from that hitter-friendly environment to pitcher-friendly Jacksonville. Though his power remains a work in progress, Paul's plate discipline improved dramatically, from one unintentional walk every 15.3 plate appearances in 2006 to one every 10.3 in 2007. Defensively, he combines above-average speed with the strongest arm in the system, tools he'll need so long as his bat isn't up to carrying a corner spot.
2007 Xavier Paul offers athleticism, speed, some power, and the best outfield arm in the system, but his approach at the plate remains fairly raw. He fared well in a repeat at Vero Beach, but that kind of success isn`t without its caveats.

2010-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)What are people telling you about Dodgers speedster Trayvon Robinson? Will he be a quality hitter (.275/.345/.450) or more of a Xavier Paul? Over/under on him on 2011's Top 101?
(Sanchez101 from Santa Barbara, CA)
If he can prove that last year was real and not a product of the Cal League, he'll be in the Top 101. He has far better overall tools than Paul, but the amount of swing-and-miss in his game is a definite issue. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-12-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Barlett for Xavier Paul, or Kyle Russell. Probably closer in talent.
(Tripon from L.A.)
Much more reasonable, yes.

In an IM last night, Kevin called Russell "The Texas Wind Machine" which had me falling out of my chair laughing. (Jay Jaffe)
