2003 For Parque’s sake, I hope he came back too early from a torn labrum. He was combustible everywhere he pitched in 2002, though if you ask Parque—an avowed fan of his own work—you’ll hear about mistreatment, mismanagement, and how the Sox should have plugged him in the front of their rotation and left him alone. Expect him to be elsewhere in 2003.
2002 Bachelor #2 is a smallish left-hander who was trying to figure out where his fastball had gone when he was diagnosed with his own torn labrum. Parque wasn't overpowering when he was healthy, so it may take some time before he’s effective again. He'll be good for a while beginning in 2004. Until then, pass.
2001 Is Jim Parque lucky? The Sox were 51-14 when they got quality starts, including a combined 20-0 for Baldwin and Eldred and 15-5 for Mike Sirotka. When Parque tossed a quality start, they went 9-6. But he got the best run support on the team, which helped the Sox win a MLB-leading 13 games in which they did not have quality starts. One bout of control problems in August and it seemed like everyone was ready to toss him into Lake Michigan. He’s cocky and outspoken, which is kind of fun coming from a finesse left-hander. He’s good and getting better.
2000 Parque was enjoying a great first half and credited ex-pitching coach Mike Pazik's absence for some of it. Once Pazik was canned, Parque resurrected a change-up that Pazik thought was too slow, and it helped Parque become that much more effective changing speeds. After suffering a bruised left thumb thanks to a line drive at the end of July, he gave up 51 runs in 52 innings over his last ten starts, while failing to log a single quality start. This being the Sox, they blamed the bad finish on a selfish drive for the 10th win he never got, but who decided he could pitch through it? Parque is better than these numbers indicate, and capable of breaking through in 2000.
1998 Parque was drafted by the Sox out of UCLA, where he was the staff ace for three years and got some Team USA experience). He throws a heavy, sinking fastball with good velocity. He’s a longshot to show up in Chicago in ’98, but it’s not impossible.
