2008 Ortmeier is roughly analogous to Todd Linden, if only Linden had never really hit at Triple-A and had come up at a time when the Giants didn't really have to worry about a player's production in order to play him, but could just run anyone out there. From August 10 through September 22, Ortmeier started 20 times (delivering three walks and 20 strikeouts in 90 plate appearances) while Fred Lewis bided his time in Triple-A, a state of affairs that defies description. Can we use "Sabean" as a verb yet?
2007 Hard-nosed and oft-injured, Ortmeier excited the Giants when he hit .274/.360/.463 with 20 home runs and 35 stolen bases at Norwich in 2005. He started 2006 in Fresno but played himself down back to Norwich. His timing couldn`t have been worse. Going on 26, he`s near the end of the line.
2006 Ortmeier went 20-20, which is pretty rare in the Eastern League, though not necessarily telling--the last two guys to do it, Marlon Byrd and Todd Dunwoody, haven`t exactly set the world on fire since. You could also be concerned about whether or not he`ll hit right-handers at higher levels, since he only batted .255/.337/.445 against them in Double-A. Still, Ortmeier had a good year, especially when he spent half his season hitting in the expansive pasturage of Norwich`s Dodd Stadium. (No truth to the rumor that the club added a submarine to its logo because the park torpedoes offense.) Like the vast majority of players in the organization, Ortmeier could stand to gain some walks, but the Giants love his work ethic, and he was having a good AFL before being shut down with a sore wrist.
2005 A disappointing season on the surface, Ortmeier actually improved his walk rate and isolated power slightly on the jump to Double-A, in a tougher hitter's league to boot. Batting average is the most variable of the major offensive stats, and Ortmeier's '04 mark of .252 looks like the outlier in his career-to-date, so we're forecasting a nice rebound for '05. At 6'4", 225 lbs, he often looks lost in the outfield, but he runs the bases well. Needs a consolidation year and an added power spike to take the next step, but he's on the right track.
