2003 From top prospect to baffled gaijin in two years. Ortiz is yet another hitter expected to bloom at Coors who didnít. His career in the U.S. is probably over. He had one good year. Let him go.
2002 As roller coasters go, this was a seven-screamer. Ortiz went from Rookie of the Year favorite to Triple-A, then to a tremendous opportunity with the Rockies. He's didn't hit that well after the deal, which shouldn't affect his standing going into 2002. He's a very valuable property and a big part of any success the Rockies are going to have. Wilton's off on both the average (it'll be lower) and the power (it'll be much higher).
2001 The MVP of the Pacific Coast League, Jose Ortiz is the odds-on favorite to win the second-base job. He has a strong arm for a second baseman, and itís thought that heíll improve there now that heís playing the position full-time. He's being compared to Tony Batista, but heís more of a spark plug like Menechino or Miguel Tejada. Offensively, he wonít be the answer to the teamís leadoff-hitter question. Normally, Iíd tout him for a Rookie of the Year Award, but Ichiro Suzuki should have that locked up. Letís put it this way: Ortiz will still be playing ten years from now.
2000 Nagging injuries keep holding him back; in 1998, he missed time with a broken hand. While he has the great arm at shortstop that can turn a single through the hole into an out, some feel he's going to have to move to second base. Similar things were said about Tony Batista coming up, and like Batista, Ortiz has good power. The question is whether the A's have room for him.
1998 Right now, Iím not sure heís any worse a prospect than Tejada. Slick glove, quick bat, decent eye. In most organizations, heíd be 300 good at-bats away from being a premier prospect. In this system, heíll have to work hard and Tejada will have to post a sub-.300 OBP. Both could happen. Ortizí arm is questionable at SS in my opinion.
