2015 After losing most of 2013 to Tommy John surgery, Oliveros cut a wide swath through the upper minors last year and may have pitched his way into a big-league job. Short but powerfully built, Oliveras can rush it up in the mid-90s, and his slider generated a lot of awkward swings and a strikeout per inning last year. For all his fastball sizzle, Oliveros needs to hack a few chunks out of his oversized walk rate and improve his fastball command. If he can do so, he'll be the first in a new wave of hard-throwing relief prospects to earn a role in the comparatively soft-tossing Minnesota bullpen.
2013 Acquired for Delmon Young in 2011, Oliveros only pitched one and two-thirds innings last year but was still more valuable than the Twins’ former outfielder in that at least his performance wasn’t tinged with anti-Semitism. Oliveros had finally shown signs of harnessing his big fastball, but a torn UCL and Tommy John surgery in late August mean that he probably won’t pitch at all in 2013. He was non-tendered, and the Twins will almost certainly bring him back as a minor-league free agent.
2012 A fireplug from Venezuela, Oliveros was one of two relievers acquired from the Tigers in the Delmon Young trade last August. His 93 to 95-mph heater gets high grades for its movement, but he is yet another reminder that man cannot live by fastball alone. Above Double-A, he hasn't been able to get batters to chase either his slider or his changeup, so he has been roughed up. If he can improve his secondary stuff and trim his walk rate, he has a chance to turn into a solid middle reliever.
2011 Lester Oliveros is your standard-issue minor-league relief suspect with a live arm, swing-and-miss stuff, and too many walks; if he can fix that last bit, his fastball/slider combination may be coming to a bullpen near you.
