2013 May 10 was a microcosm of Nunezís 2012 season: He started at third base against southpaw David Price and went 2-for-2 with a walk and two steals, but he also committed two errors. As soon as the Yankees got a lead, he was removed from the game and replaced by Nix. The next day, he was demoted to Triple-A despite a .294 average and a .356 OBP, which tells you most of what you need to know about his defense. Nunez lacks the glove of a true super-sub, so heís trying to pioneer the position of bat-first utility guy. The problem is that he has neither the patience nor the power to pull that off at any position, and thereís a reason why the part he wants to play wasnít pioneered earlier.
2012 The Yankees like to tout Nunez as a potential starter or multi-position sub. Nunez's talent is flattered but declines the honor on account of the Yankees having confused it with someone else. Nunez can run a bit, but is spectacularly prone to errors for a player whose main job is to play solid defense when called off the bench (Jeter made 12 errors in 1047.1 innings at short; Nunez made 14 in 386.1). As for his bat, barring some BABIP-related swelling, this is it. Starting potential: nil. Reserve potential: still TBD pending softer hands. The Yankees' position on both: disproportionately enthusiastic bordering on delusional.
2011 Nunez inserted himself into the Jeter-successor picture, at least transiently, with a solid-if-unexciting season at Scranton. A contact hitter, Nunezís fundamentals at the plate impress scouts, but his approach doesnít produce extra-base hits or walks, which he will need to keep his production up given that he's not likely to hit .300 regularly. That said, the average major-league shortstop hit .262/.319/.374 last year, and if thatís the new standard then Nunez might actually be, well, not more potent than the the new kids on the block, but at least as potent. Add to his single-icious hitting style an improved defensive approach that saw him dramatically cut his errors, and one has to admit that Nunez may be the face of an impoverished future. Wake the children: the days of the Holy Trinity are at an end.
2010 Nunez first drew attention in 2005, when he hit .318 as an 18-year-old Low-A-baller playing against strapping college types. Three years went by during which Nunez hit .243/.286/.329. What seemed like a social promotion to Trenton turned into a shot at redemption, when Nunez rediscovered how to hit. He picked the right place: Waterfront Park is a tough place to hit .322. He isn't out of the woods yet, because he won't walk and 33 errors in 120 games means he's probably not a shortstop. If he keeps hitting .300, someone will find a place for him, but if (or when) his BABIP regresses, he has nothing to fall back on.
