BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Carlos Monasterios spent all of 2010 on the big-league roster as a Rule 5 pick, finding some success out of the bullpen, but he made just one Triple-A appearance in 2011 before being shut down, and underwent Tommy John surgery on July 15.
2011 A Rule 5 pick plucked away from the Phillies via the Mets, Monasterios had all of 7 1/3 innings above High-A ball under his belt when the Dodgers stashed him in their bullpen. While they nursed him through the season without losing his rights, his presence was a mixed blessing, particularly given the marginalization of homegrown prospects such as Scott Elbert and James McDonald. Monasterios pitched well out of the bullpen (2.06 ERA in 35 innings, 0.8 homers per nine, 23/8 strikeout-unintentional walk ratio) but was torched as rotation filler (5.91 ERA in 53.1 innings, 2.0 home runs per nine innings, 29/18 strikeouts to unintentional walks). Despite Monasterios's reliance on a 90-ish sinker/slider combo, he proved quite homer-prone and unable to generate a healthy ground-ball percentage, suggesting the need for a deeper toolbox to survive in the majors.
2010 Carlos Monasterios was busy having an excellent season in winter ball when he got snagged in the Rule 5 draft; he'll try to break camp with the Dodgers with a decent fastaball/curve mix.
