2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Craig, in my 20 team dynasty league I recently traded Jon Lester for Devin Mesoraco plus the 9th overall pick in next years draft? How do you think I made out? Thanks.
(Charles from Hotlanta)
If I were your friend I'd say "that's an interesting choice you've made there, Chaz" but we don't really know each other so I'll tell you straight up I think you made a mistake. I don't think Lester is losing his skills anytime soon, and while I like Mesoraco, I don't think he's the next Lucroy. I might be wrong though -- and part of it rests on the value of the 9th overall pick. So I'm working with limited info here. Let's be friends though! (Craig Goldstein)
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Mauricio, thanks for taking our questions. Dynasty league question for you. In a vacuum what do you think of a trade of Jon Lester for Devin Mesoraco? Is it fair value? If not which side has to add and by how much?
(Charles Manx from Shorter Way Bridge)
1v1 in a vacuum it's about equal with me giving the slight nod to Mesoraco. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)How do you feel about Devin Mesoraco this upcoming season? He never received consistent playing time with Dusty at the helm, think the departure of the skipper and Hanigan will make him a top 10 fantasy catcher this season?
(Hank from Springfield)
He has to figure out RHP before I feel comfortable giving him top ten potential. He's going to play, so that part is solved. He has to learn and adjust now. (Mauricio Rubio)
2013-01-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. How about the Reds this season? Will Votto's power be back and can the young 3 - Zack Cozart, Todd Frazier, and Devin Mesoraco be counted on for much?
(Rockford from Flowmont)
I like the Reds a lot. I'm guessing Votto will be fully healthy and not the guy who went 170 or so plate appearances without a home run after late June last season. As for the three young players, Mesoraco is the only one who hasn't already had a pretty productive season in the majors, and he could still get there. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat today. After a poor showing last year is there hope for some value in Devin Mesoraco this season? Also do the Rockies still plan on that horrible idea of limiting starters to 75 pitches?
(Tommy from Flowmont)
You're welcome, thank you for joining! Catching prospects are poor fantasy investments. Even the can't-missiest of can't misses Matt Wieters has been underwhelming from a fantasy perspective. There is so much to their development that isn't related to hitting that they often take a while to fully develop. There are exceptions like Wilin Rosario but that's because he plays in Coors and doesn't actually know how to catch. The rule is that prospect catchers aren't worth it *cough* D'Arnaud *cough*. Re: the Rockies, I'm not sure. Walt Weiss is a complete unknown at this point. If so, it really limits any upside guys like Chacin, de la Rosa or Nicasio might have. (Paul Sporer)
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Devin Mesoraco still have a future as every-day C for the Reds? If so, when might that future be?
(sitdancer from DC)
Hi sitdancer, thanks for the question. Someone is blasting Men at Work's "Who Can It Be Now?" so forgive me if I'm distracted. I think Mesoraco can be an everyday catcher, but as numerous youngsters before him have shown, that is a very difficult position to master at the big-league level. The presence of Ryan Hanigan complicates matters. He is almost the ideal backup catcher, but at the same time, he's too good to be a backup. (Geoff Young)
2012-12-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat Russell! What do the Reds have in store for Devin Mesoraco this year? Do you expect him to have a significant spike in playing time?
(Corey from Cincinnati)
Since Hanigan, who is nice and steady, is there, I don't see Mesoraco outright displacing him. (Russell Carleton)
2012-08-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Devin Mesoraco is having a bad season at the plate because: a) he's not getting enough PAs, b) his BABIP is .228, c) he's still young, d) Dusty Baker, e) some combination of A-D
(dianagram from VORGville)
Consistent playing time is always going to be a factor, but given his age and the fact that developing a player at the major league level in the middle of a pennant chase is complicated, I'm not sure how much blame can fall on the manager. His job to win now, not develop a player for the future by playing him in the present. I'd like to see him play more, and yes he has been a bit unlucky, but the factors are what the factors are. I'd say its mostly A and C. (Jason Parks)
2012-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of Devin Mesoraco, I haven't decide who is calling the game yet. I actually think Ryan Hanigan deserves the time split, am I wrong?
(Dusty Baker from Cinncy)
We probably don't know enough about what his pitchers are telling him, and how much those things matter. Hanigan's not a zero and a split wouldn't be Dusty's worst move. (Sam Miller)
2012-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks Derek. How much higher, if at all, is Carlos Santana's ceiling compared with Devin Mesoraco, considering offense and defense?
(Keith from Manchester, CT)
It's definitely higher. Neither is Ivan Rodriguez behind the plate (neither is Mike Piazza either) and Santana’s ceiling with the bat is much higher (not to say Mesoraco won’t be good, though). Santana has the kind of elite catcher bat potential that would still play very well at another position. (Derek Carty)
2012-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Rapid Fire: Ten fantasy rookies who will make impacts in 2012 (5 pitchers, 5 batters): _______? Go!
(Francois from Toronto)
Okay, rapid fire…
P: Yu Darvish, Matt Moore, Addison Reed, Julio Teheran, Brad Peacock
H: Jesus Montero, Yoennis Cespedes, Mike Trout, Devin Mesoraco, Tyler Pastornicky
There are certainly others that will have impacts too. I actually have an article about fantasy-worthy rookies in the Fantasy Baseball Index magazine that will hit newsstands this preseason, if you’re interested in my take on other guys. (Derek Carty)
2011-08-16 17:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat, Jason. Do you think the Reds call up Devin Mesoraco in September, and since Ramon Hernandez is a free agent, how likely is it Mesoraco gets the starting catcher job next spring?
(Keith from Manchester, CT)
I would be stunned if the job is not Mesoraco's next April and frankly, it should be his already. The Reds are not going anywhere so unless Hernandez is being blocked in claims, no reason to keep him around at this point. With Pierzynski going down, the White Sox need a catcher.... (Jason Collette)
2011-08-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Derek, gotta admit I was worried when Marc left, but you've continued to make fantasy coverage a bright spot for the site. Wondering about which call-ups over the next few weeks you think will have the biggest fantasy impact. Specifically, players like Montero who haven't been called up yet and may still be available. Thanks.
(DanDaMan from The Vineyard)
Thanks, Dan. I really appreciate the kind words.

We've seen most of the big names called up over the past couple weeks with guys like Goldschmidt, Lawrie, Trayon Robinson, and others getting the call. A few others still left in the minors that could prove valuable are Montero, Leonys Martin, Brett Jackson (if he continues hitting), Brad Peacock, Devin Mesoraco (if someone gets injured in Cincy), and maybe Matt Moore, especially with Alex Cobb done for the year. (Derek Carty)
2011-06-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Devin Mesoraco is destroying AAA (.330/.409/.558), but the Reds already have two starter-worthy catchers. Should they make a move mid-season to give him a shot or hang tight until after the season and let Hernandez walk?
(RMR from Chicago)
Free Ryan Hanigan! As far as I'm concerned, Hanigan should have not only his own starting job, but his own reality show about having a starting job. The Reds are stacked at catcher from the majors on down, and a number of other teams around the league might pay through the nose for some help behind the plate, so if they're confident that Mesoraco is psychologically ready for the majors and that his development wouldn't be hurt by a time-sharing arrangement, making a move might not be a bad way of maximizing the value of their assets. (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Devin Mesoraco ahead of him in the depth chart, do you see Yasmani Grandal changing positions within the Red org or do you see him on another team in the future. Does he have the bat to play at a corner OF or 1b?
(Hutch from Ottawa)
He might, but moving him from C to 1B would destroy his market value, and do nothing for his future with the Reds because of Votto. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-09-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Were you exaggerating for effect in a previous answer or have you really never heard of Wil Myers, Devin Mesoraco and Brandon Belt? I realize you're not the in-house prospect guru, but you're leaving us with the impression that you don't even read the content. 2 of those 3 were in KG's ten pack today.
(Rob from Alaska)
Have I heard of them? Yes, in passing, but I don't have particularly strong fixes on them at this point in their careers. Having never seen them play nor collected multiple opinions about them, anything I say is going to be regurgitation, and you're better off getting an opinion straight from the horse's mouth.

Furthermore, it can take me days to catch up to all the content on this site. Particularly when I've got articles AND chats up in the air, I don't get to some of the good stuff until later in the week. And I'd guarantee you every single writer on this site has the same problem - we're all more concerned with where our next ideas are coming from than we are with admiring each other's handiwork, not that we don't think highly of it. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-08-20 15:30:00 (link to chat)Any chance the Reds' AAA affiliate could beat the Pirates in a 7 game series? They're trotting out a lineup of Dave Sappelt, Chris Valaika, Yonder Alonso, Todd Frazier, Juan Francisco, Danny Dorn, and Devin Mesoraco, with Sam LeCure, Matt Maloney, Aaron Harang, and Aroldis Chapman among their pitchers.
(Joe from Cincy)
I was going to rip you and talk about how massive the different is between Triple-A and the big leagues is, but they might have a chance. I'll still favor the Pirates though. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-11-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)"fall-down range".....stop it, your killing me....I can't be laughing that loud at work....man
(Chris from Virginia)
I've thought of compiling a bathroom-reading book of my favorite scout quotes. It would be awesome, but definitely not safe for work. Here's a nice exchange with a scout about Devin Mesoraco that I had for the Reds list:

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes. (Kevin Goldstein)
