DateQuestionAnswer
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)Are there any NL-only 4th OF'ers or equivalent that you really like? I'm thinking of someone along the lines of Allen Craig a few yearsa ago that flashed some promise but was in line to back up at the start of the season.
(mj1453 from chicago)
I like Drew Stubbs for the Colorado factor and because Corey Dickerson is no sure thing, Jon Jay as a sneaky value proposition behind the oft-injured Peter Bourjos, and Nate McLouth as a sneaky source of speed even as a backup. (Mike Gianella)
2011-06-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)With all the hitting coaches being fired, when will Larry Parrish be shown the door by the Braves? He's taken one of the best offenses from last season, had Melky Cabrera withdrawn and Dan Uggla added, and has turned them into one of the worst this season.
(Nick Carter from London)
It's never clear how much impact a hitting or pitching coach can have on a team, so it's very tough to lay their problems at the feet of one, not that they don't as a means of scapegoating somebody when things get rough. Did Parrish tell Uggla to start swinging with his eyes closed? Did he trade Yunel Escobar for the hacktastic Alex Gonzalez? Did he drive Nate McLouth's career off a cliff? Cause Jason Heyward's injury woes? Force anyone to play Jordan Schafer?

The bottom line is that I'm very skeptical the Braves' offensive woes owe much to Parrish, though I suspect they'll make an example of him anyway if their fortunes don't turn. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-06-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Ben What do you think will happen to Jordan Schafer once Nate McLouth returns from the DL? Also, what do you think of Brad Hand going forward? Thanks.
(Ed from Cranford, NJ)
Once McLouth returns, Schafer will either be cast into the fires of Mount Doom or relegated to glorified fourth-outfielder status. The latter is more likely.

I'm not particularly excited about Hand this season (he may have been promoted prematurely) but at least now that he's arrived, Marlins fans can stop complaining about having no hand--no hand at all!

Yes, I answered this question so I could link to a Seinfeld clip. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Best chance for a bounceback in 2011? Kung Fu Panda? McLouth? Melky?
(dianagramr from NYC)
From that group, I'd pick Nate McLouth. PCS issues aside, there's a question over how he got his swing screwed up in the first place, and whether or not he'll be fine if he goes back to what worked for him in Pittsburgh. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-07-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Nate McLouth will get things together as the season goes on, or did the Pirates basically just nail his evaluation all along?
(OTSgamer from Dallas, TX)
Concussions are very difficult to recover from, so I'd be somewhat worried. I would understand if Frank Wren were looking for OF help at the moment. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-06-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)12 team 5x5 single season, I have two DL slots, currently occupied by Derek Holland and Michael Gonzalez. Should I replace either with Orlando Hudson, cut Hudson, or cut Nate McLouth or Chipper Jones from my bench. Also, have you played God of War III, and if so were you put off at all by how violent some of the game was?
(Bill N from Buffalo)
God of War's combat bores me. I don't mind the violence, but that's really the selling point for it IMO. I'm also someone whose favorite part of Gears of War is sneaking up on a baddie with a chainsaw bayonet, so I might not be the best person to ask about that.

It might be time to cut Nate McLouth--it's not like anyone is going to snag him off of waivers if he starts to hit, because his current line is so awful that he won't show up on anyone's radar unless they are beyond desperate. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-11 16:30:00 (link to chat)During my fantasy draft I felt like a Billy Beane prodigy when I grabbed both Grady Sizemore and Nate McLouth with mid-round picks. Since then, of course, their terrible starts in the first five weeks has gotten me to channel my inner Jim Bowden. What's the thought on these two moving forward? More Sample Size Theater with an inevitable rebound, or did everyone else just wisely stay away from these two in the first place?
(OTSgamer from Dallas, TX)
Grady Sizemore is a great young baseball player. I can't figure out why, but he just doesn't seem to be showing the amazing eye he's shown for several years. He's also swinging and missing a lot more than he used to. I'm guessing he should bounce back, but he must be doing something wrong in his approach to be getting these results, maybe not seeing the ball well or something. Nate McLouth's line drive rate is pretty low this year, but not low enough to explain his atrocious BABIP. I have to imagine that bounces back, because nothing else seems crazily out of line. I wouldn't give up on either player at all. (Matt Swartz)
2010-05-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Nate McLouth ever escape his funk? And can the Braves make the playoffs if not?
(xyz3g from Minneapolis, MN)
I think he will, but if he doesn't, the Braves have no chance. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have Travis Snider, Adam Jones, Colby Rasmus, Nate McLouth and Hunter Pence in a 10-team mixed league - how good/worthless do you expect that outfield to be by the end of the season?
(ravenight from Boston)
I think Pence, McLouth and Jones are definite candidates to improve on their poor starts. Colby Rasmus has been doing a better job with the strike zone this year and seems to have a better understanding of pitches he can do something with, so I think he's finally going to have that breakout year we've been waiting for. Snider I'm hopeful for, but if you make me pick one he's probably the one I think the development will be slowest for. (Marc Normandin)
2010-03-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)There are a handful of players who've discovered vision problems this offseason or spring and are getting glasses (Nate McLouth, Corey Hart, Randy Wells, probably others). How do medical staffs miss this for so long, and how much effect is getting their vision corrected likely to have on their performance this year?
(wilykat from San Francisco)
This one is fascinating to me. There's usually more to it than you see, but there's also changes. We're all aging, even McLouth, and our bodies change. I've certainly paid a lot more attention to my eyes lately! Suffice it to say that this is almost always on the player, not the med staff. (Will Carroll)
2009-10-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)What moves should the Braves make this offseason, if any? If you assume that they re-sign LaRoche for a year or two and that Heyward gets called up next year, it would seem that they're pretty set to compete again. Should they re-sign Hudson?
(Cox813 from NJ)
Hudson's deal involves an option, which I would pick up because it's money they have and he'd allow them to trade a starter. I'd advocated moving Jurrjens, but I'm less certain of that now, because while I think there's risk with him, there's clearly upside. But he could bring back the kind of hitter the Braves could really use, a talent-under-control like Jurrjens. I don't know that Vazquez or Lowe brings that kind of player back. Well, I know Lowe doesn't.

In any case, they need at least two outfielders, even granting Heyward gets there in the summer. Nate McLouth is still a fourth OF masquerading as a starting CF. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Marc, I haven't been impressed much with Nate McLouth since the trade. What kind of final line do you think he puts up?
(Richard from Athens, GA)
Probably the line he is at. I like McLouth, but last year was probably his best effort. (Marc Normandin)
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hiya Joe. Better numbers the rest of this season: Nate McLouth or Justin Upton?
(YD from Philly)
Ditka.

(Upton.) (Joe Sheehan)
2009-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Elijah Dukes, Lastings Milledge, Ryan Zimmerman, Adam Dunn et al. Some of those Nats are worth drafting this season. What about my Pirates.....
(mhixpgh from Pittsburgh)
Well uh, you've got...um...that guy...you know...Oh! It's Nate McLouth, Ryan Doumit, and maybe Adam LaRoche. I wouldn't touch your rotation with someone else's roster though. (Marc Normandin)
2009-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Too bad Primanti's Sandwiches don't count for anything. They are the best thing at PNC Park. They're really something...
(mhixpgh from Pittsburgh)
You're going to make Nate McLouth very sad by saying that, you know! (Marc Normandin)
2009-03-10 14:30:00 (link to chat)What are the chances of Nate McLouth not being a Pirate by August?
(Connor from Chicago, IL)
Slim to none. That contract was about locking down a popular player, or, if you prefer, repeating the mistakes of the previous administration. I'm bearish on McLouth. This is the Jack Wilson contract, basically. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-02-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)John-thanks for the chat. When do you see A. McCutchen in Pitt? when does the power come?
(raygu1 from burlington, nj)
I'd say he's up at the All-Star break and I wouldn't completely surprised to see Nate McLouth dealt if the arbitration hearing gets contentious. They would be selling high on McLouth if they trade him this year. (John Perrotto)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Nate Mclouth putting up comparable numbers this year to last year? I think he is an above average player, but his value will never be higher coming off an all star and gold glove season. Would now be a good time to test the trade market for him?
(Matt from Pittsburgh)
I love McLouth as a person and his attitude but I'd consider selling high on him, as well. It's pretty clear he'll have to move to a corner once Andrew McCutchen is ready to play center (sometime during the 2009 season) and McLouth's value will be lower in left or right. (John Perrotto)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)According to an MLB.com story: "(John Russell) suggested that the Pirates will start the season with Nyjer Morgan, Nate McLouth and Brandon Moss manning the outfield." Are you surprised that McCutcheon isn't in that equation, and whether he is or not, should the Pirates be looking to add a more legitimate home run threat to that mix?
(Cambridge from BP New England)
McCutchen didn't have a good second half at Indianapolis and they feel he needs a little more time there. Yes, the Pirates need a power hitter in the worst way, but they don't seem too intent on getting one. (John Perrotto)
2008-11-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Joe, your opinion on the Gold Glove awards, specifically wrt Nate McLouth. Stat sites rate his defense relatively low, but mgrs and coaches (who should know if a player is good defensively by sheer live-baseball knowledge) vote him a gold glove. Who is correct?
(Frank from Vegas)
If managers and coaches were *solely* focused, throughout the year, on evaluating the defensive ability (or performance, pick one) of the players they're watching, I might sign on to the idea that they "should know if a player is good defensively by sheer live-baseball knowledge." As it is, managers and coaches are a hell of a lot more concerned with their own charges, and the dozens of things they're doing to win baseball games, to pay much attention. The GG awards end up being about who you saw make edge-of-range plays against you, or who you voted for last year, or who Bob's voting for. Poor execution of a decent idea.

I might cut McLouth a little bit of slack in the metrics for the idea that he played behind a staff that may have given up more rockets than others, but there's no way he's an above-average center fielder, much less a great one. He won the GG with his bat, his ASG plays and some memorable dives. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-05-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Joe, how real is Nate McLouth's start? I'm not crazy to think he should be an All-Star starter, am I? (I know he won't be one, but he deserves it).
(hisjazziness from Pittsburgh)
I didn't vote for him (those columns next week), but he was in the mix, and I never vote for guys having three good months. The NL outfield has gone from ten deep to nothing in two years. (Joe Sheehan)
