2016 Michael Martinez is the rusty Swiss Army Knife you've had since Cub Scouts: He does everything and nothing, and the tweezers are missing.
2015 Michael Martinez isn't baseball good or baseball young, but he's totally qualified to guide tourists around the state of Pennsylvania.
2014 When the Phillies took Martinez from the Nationals in the Rule 5 draft, they committed to keeping him on the big-league roster throughout the 2011 season. So that's the excuse for the first year; the years since are all on the front office and manager. Martinez has hit .187/.234/.261 as a Phillie, and never finished above the Mendoza line in any single season. He's utile, capable of playing any position behind the pitcher, but he's subpar at each, according to most metrics. Yet the Phillies have always found a way to get him playing time. They finally threw the hand away in October.
2013 The pint-sized former Rule 5 pick is technically a success in that he remained with the team for the year he was drafted, and he even stuck around for part of the following year. But he hit .188 in 356 at-bats during those two years, the lowest of any NL player with at least 350 at-bats. That suggests that success is a relative term. The glove-only Martinez was retained on a minor-league deal and may get a chance to launch another assault on the Mendoza line as a utility player.
2012 Selected as a Rule 5 pick from the Nationals before the season, Martinez had to remain on the major-league roster or be offered back to Washington. So remain he did, despite being on the wrong side of every line Mario Mendoza could draw in the sand. His benefit was his versatility: he filled in in center while Shane Victorino was out, at third base while Placido Polanco was out, at second base while Chase Utley was out, and at shortstop while Jimmy Rollins was out. But considering how bad his bat is, Martinez is like the converse of the Woody Allen joke from Annie Hall. One old lady eating at a restaurant says, “My, what terrible food.” And the other one replies, “Yes, but such big portions!”
