2003 Frank Thomasís re-signing should signal the end of Lieferís White Sox career. Heís got cement hands and feet, so heíll be hard-pressed to hold down a defensive job, but heíd make a fair bat off the bench or DH for someone. Now that heís an Expo as a throw-in on the Colon deal, he could win the everyday job at first. Heíll be easily mistaken for Lee Stevens.
2002 Leifer is in the wrong place at the wrong time. With Frank Thomas returning and neither Carlos Lee nor Paul Konerko in need of being platooned, there aren't going to be any at-bats for him in Chicago. He's ready to play John Lowenstein to someone's Gary Roenicke; he just needs to find a manager with Earl Weaver's sensibilities.
2001 Jeff Lieferís future isnít in his hands. If the White Sox trade Konerko, Liefer has a shot at sharing playing time with Frank Thomas at DH and getting some spot duty at first base and left field. Because the Sox lineup is so heavily right-handed, Liefer might be a useful bench player. Still, his usefulness doesnít make a Konerko trade a good idea. In Liefer's favor, he isnít a platoon hitter.
2000 He made the team out of spring training when everyone belatedly noticed that the Sox didn't have any left-handed power. Between injuries and his defensive limitations--there will be no return to third base or left field in anything other than an emergency--he can go only as far as his bat takes him. Dumping Mario Valdez makes it pretty clear who the organization prefers, so Liefer has an opportunity to win playing time at first base if Konerko is moved to third. If you havenít figured it out yet, the Sox have a lot of options for the infield corners.
1998 Lieferís failure at third and his lack of lack of plate discipline have kept him being the player the Sox had hoped heíd be. If he repeats Double-A, I expect heíll have a big year, although it would be nice to see what Triple-A hitting instructor Von Joshua could do for him.
1997 The Soxí í95 first-round pick, this was Lieferís first year in uniform. He committed a quick 23 errors in the Midwest League before his promotion to the Carolina League. Despite the defense, he was named to the leagueís All-Star team, and was named its best hitting prospect. Heís usually compared to Robin Ventura because heís a left-handed hitter; itís too early to say whether the comparison will stick.
