2003 He may have never chased Jerry Rice down the field after a crossing pattern, but Kinkade could probably do a decent Brian Jordan impression if ever needed for an extended stretch. As is, he’ll settle for an understudy role. A scrap heap pickup from Baltimore last off-season, the Dodgers waited until July to call him up. Handy at the outfield and infield corners, Kinkade should have a bench job waiting for him in 2003.
2002 Kinkade is a pure hitter who isn't quite good enough with the bat to be a regular big-league DH. He's been tried all over the field without much success, but if you ask, he’ll catch or play the infield and outfield corners. If this team didn’t already have a small army of right-handed hitters lodged in the infield and outfield corners, he’d be a useful spare part. On the Orioles, he rots.
2001 Mike Kinkade is a fair hitter, just not nearly as good as his lifetime .335 batting average in the minors suggests. He’s always been old for his league (like last year; 27-year-olds shouldn’t be playing in Double-A, even if they're winning batting titles), and his secondary skills are below average. His defensive reputation is hideous, but the numbers, surprisingly, don’t look bad at all. He was in Double-A trying to relearn catching, a position he played in college, and threw out a respectable 43% of runners.
2000 He plays third base only in the sense that he stands where the other third basemen do. The Tides also tried him at first base, in the outfield and behind the plate. Face it: he has no real position. One-dimensional players have to really, extraordinarily excel at that one dimension to be useful, and Kinkade is an average hitter at best.
1999 His defense is awful but he looks like he'll hit in the majors, but if he isn’t playing third he only hits well enough to be a good pinch-hitter. Why the Mets acquired him is anyone's guess, unless they wanted someone on the roster to make Bonilla's glovework look good.
1998 A converted catcher, Kinkade was the Texas League MVP after hitting .385/.455/.588. You might compare him to Tim Unroe, except that he was a year older in his big year at El Paso than Unroe was in ’94, and his year was better. There are still strong concerns about his glovework at the hot corner, but he’ll certainly move up to Louisville in ’98.
