2013 Since the save became an official statistic in 1969, only four pitchers have notched at least 40 saves while posting a lower strikeout rate than Johnson. He easily posted the lowest SO9 among pitchers with at least 20 saves last season, nearly a full strikeout per nine fewer than the next lowest: the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man-sized mess that was Jose Valverde. Saying Johnson is not a prototypical closer would be like saying a hammer is not a prototypical power tool—it’ll get the job done; it just won’t be as flashy. Give Buck Showalter credit for giving Johnson the opportunity, because he dominated thanks to plus control and lots of groundballs. He generates grounders using a 95-mph sinker—yet another reason why he’s an anomaly of a closer; pitchers rarely generate that kind of velocity on sinkers.
2012 The Orioles will be faced with an interesting decision to make about Johnson this offseason. Initially, there was talk that they wanted to move him into the rotation, but given Kevin Gregg's demise and Johnson's own excellence in the pen, making him their full-time closer is now a legitimate option. While he's had two very good seasons in a row and despite throwing 95 mph, Johnson has never had a penchant for the strikeout, and it seems unlikely that would change as a starter. Despite his high velocity, he'd probably end up as a Nick Blackburn, a fourth-starter type with a below-average K rate, getting by on serviceable control and a lot of groundballs.
2011 Johnson, who had finished out 2009 closing (badly), pitched poorly in April and then was found to be suffering from a small tear in his pitching elbow. Though he was able to avoid surgery, he still lost nearly four months to rest and rehabilitation. He pitched well upon his return, allowing just four runs in 16.2 innings, striking out 13 and walking one while pitching the eighth inning for Koji Uehara. He should occupy the same set-up slot this year, and though he’s not the traditional flame-throwing late-inning man, it’s a role for which the ground-baller is well suited.
2010 Johnson's 2008 season ended in August due to shoulder trouble, and he might have been better off had he missed September 2009 as well; he entered with a 3.12 ERA and left with it at 4.11. He set up Sherrill for the first two-thirds of the season, then took over as closer when Big George was traded away, picking up eight saves while blowing four. That's a poor ratio, but the explanation looks more like simple fatigue than closer stress. Johnson doesn't have overpowering closer stuff, and the team would prefer to get a more "typical" free-agent closer and let Johnson go back to setting up.
2009 Called up from Norfolk, Johnson established himself by running off 16 scoreless innings over ten games. His performance earned him a move through the bullpen roles, settling in as the primary set-up man and, briefly, as closer when Sherrill was injured. There were occasional noises about having him start a game, but Trembley preferred to keep him in a role where he was thriving, and intends to keep him there in '09. His season was cut short by a shoulder injury—a distressingly common phrase in this chapter—but he should recover by spring.
2008 Jim Johnson is the same pitcher he was three years ago; that made him one of the better pitchers in A-ball in 2005, but he was supposed to build on that, not stall.
2007 Johnson`s fastball-curve mix didn`t work quite so well in his jump up to Double-A, and he further failed to build on his breakthrough 2005 season by getting crushed in his one major league start. He generates nearly twice as many ground-ball outs as fly balls and could benefit from better glovework as he moves up, but for now his focus should be regrouping from his rough 2006.
