YearComment
2010 With his 300th win in the books, the Big Unit is pondering whether or not he wants to pitch at least one more year in the majors before calling it quits. Achieving 5,000 strikeouts isn't impossible, just 125 third strikes away, a landmark that only Nolan Ryan has ever surpassed. There's no begrudging the man his choice; if he's still enjoying the game, he won't have a problem finding an employer. The question is whether or not there's much left in the tank, even after he answered that question before with his '03 and '08 campaigns. He provided just six quality starts in the 17 turns when he was able to pitch, and coming back to contribute in relief in September, he was scored on in four of five appearances. And however willing the spirit, the body's contributed its own thought on the subject, as Johnson suffered his first real shoulder injury, a partially torn rotator cuff. He will be the first Diamondback put in the Hall of Fame, or at least he should be, because it was that 81-win stretch from 1999-2002 that eliminated ever having to ask if he was headed for Cooperstown. If this is it, this is ground control to say you've really made the grade.
2009 Sure, he's well into his 40s and has a bad back and a bad haircut and needs some extra rest here and there, but every once in a while, especially towards the end of the year when the back bothered him less, he still kind of looked like the Randy Johnson of old. He's clearly a fraction of his former self, but he wants to get to 300 wins (he's just five away), and he still puts people away. The team that gives him to opportunity to do so won't be doing it for charity's sake, they'll be signing someone who can help them win ballgames.
2008 Johnson is the fulcrum around which the Diamondbacks' fortunes revolve, but he could turn their fearsome one-two punch in the rotation into a great front three if he can stay healthy. Johnson's back surgery in August went well, and he was rehabbing in September, but it was his second such surgery in less than a year. The challenge for the D'backs is avoiding a third, which would likely be career-ending. A reduced workload seems like the best answer; if Roger Clemens could be a six-inning ace for four months in Houston, Johnson could be the best five-inning starter in the game's history. That might seem like an odd modern artifact, but if it reduces the strain on Johnson's back, it could allow him to work deeper into games in September and October, and could get him to 300 wins in the process (he needs 16 more). There's still the chance that he'll simply break down for good no matter what Arizona does; the standard assertions about what sort of workload should be assigned to a pitcher Johnson's age are sort of hard to apply to such a physical anomaly as the Big Unit, especially when he's still overpowering this many people at the plate.
2007 Johnson underwent surgery for a herniated disc after the season. He`s expected to be pitching during spring training, but the exact timing of his return isn`t set in stone. The disc surgery raises a number of interesting questions about Johnson`s 2006. Johnson often had good velocity on his fastball, but his signature slider had disappeared, and he was unable to finish off hitters. Was Johnson ever truly healthy? Will the surgery help restore him to his old form, make no difference, or further diminish him? Or is it just that this is what a 43-year-old future Hall of Famer pitches like? Johnson is a unique specimen, but past experience with the entire lineage of pitchers suggests that, whether the pitcher be a knuckleballer or flame-thrower, 43 is the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns. Having reacquired Johnson in a five-player trade and extended his contract through 2008, the Diamoandbacks are about to go there with him.
2005 Eventually, you run out of superlatives. Despite pitching for a team that was worse than a 12-episode binge of a Latvian-dubbed "Sex and the City," Johnson was his usual dominant self, showing virtually no negative signs of age or injury. There's nothing in his performance record to suggest that any sort of collapse is imminent, and he'll be a Cy Young candidate in '05, in New York, Phoenix or anywhere else. Enjoy watching him as long as you can—take the day off when he starts if necessary, because it's going to be a long time before we see another pitcher this exciting.
2003 Johnson’s one of the best few pitchers of all time, and arguably the most dominant ever. There’s no reason to believe that 2003 is going to be any different than 2002 for him. Overlooked with Johnson because of his incredible stuff is that the guy works as hard as anyone in the game, physically and mentally. Yes, he’ll play this season at age 39, but if he wants to keep pitching, he could end up making Nolan Ryan look like a premature retiree. If Jesse Orosco can be a situational lefty out of the pen at age 44 or 45, who’s to say Johnson couldn’t do that job until he was 50? The scary back problems of a few years ago are a distant memory.
2002 The best pitcher in baseball. What Johnson has done at his age is remarkable, given that most pitchers in their late 30s answer to “Coach.” He was more than two wins better than every pitcher in baseball except teammate Curt Schilling and the Twins’ Joe Mays. He has an excellent chance to become the fourth pitcher in history with 4,000 strikeouts, assuming Roger Clemens gets there first. Johnson has made the four-year deal the Snakes gave him three years ago look like a brilliant move. He will be the most coveted 39-year-old in history after this season.
2001 Because he tossed 95 2/3 innings in the first two months of the season, it wasn’t a surprise when Randy Johnson started complaining that he wasn’t bouncing back physically between starts. The Big Unit was downright mortal over the last three months, giving up 61 runs in 117 innings, but don’t expect him to mail his Cy Young Award to Kevin Brown. Towards season’s end, rumors were circulating that Johnson was tipping his pitches. Because he wasn’t himself in the second half, we might be able to write off that talk as just another bit of Bobby Valentine bluster.
2000 The Big Unit had another Cy Young season, showing no ill effects from carrying the Mariners on his back all those years. That back appears to be cranky but basically sound. As we predicted last year, he ended up with more than 350 strikeouts. His well-publicized postseason woes still appear to be more bad luck than anything else, but he didn’t do much for the Diamondbacks in the Division Series.
1999 If Johnson had re-signed with the Astros, with the bad hitting background and no DH, and stayed healthy, he could have made a serious run at Nolan Ryan’s single-season K record (383). Now that he’s with Arizona, he might still become only the third man (after Ryan and Koufax) to reach 350 K’s in a season. He proved that his arm wasn’t the problem once he left Seattle. He’s 35, but unless his back gives out I see no evidence that he won’t last into his 40s.
1998 When healthy, the best pitcher in baseball. I don’t think he’ll make another 70 career starts. Age isn’t known for making chronic back problems go away. Woodward has an interesting dilemma with Johnson. What if he makes his first 22 starts, posts a 1.91 ERA and wants a contract extension of say, four years at $13 million per year? Do you give it to him? If not, do people know where you live?
1997 Commenting on Johnson is like commenting on Sandy Koufax in the mid-60s: you know he’s the best left-handed pitcher of his generation, you know if he’s healthy he could win 25 games in any given year and you know there isn’t a pitcher in baseball that batters would rather face less. How important has his improved control been? Over the last five years, batters have spanked Johnson for a .139 average when he gets ahead in the count. His back may continue to give him trouble, but when he can take the mound he should be as unhittable as ever.
1996  Can pitch a little. Will be hard-pressed to continue his ERA trend, but don't rule it out. Hopefully for Mariners fans, he didn't hurt himself pitching every 20-25 minutes last October, when the Mariners' staff was shown to be a bit shallow. If Nolan Ryan can do this for anyone else, he should charge about $30 million or so. Johnson will play this year at age 32, but there's no indication in his previous performances that a dropoff is anywhere in sight. The Mariners are a very interesting team, and one very vulnerable to injuries. The loss of Johnson would be far worse for the team than the potential loss of Griffey. Be honest: doesn't watching Johnson pitch to most batters remind you of the Little League World Series, where 12-year-old Taiwanese pitchers gun down 13-year-old kids from the U.S., and then get mobbed on the mound by their wives and children?
