BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-03-06 20:00:00 (link to chat)Anthony Rendon is killing it right now. Davey Johnson has stated "no matter what he's bound for the minors". Thoughts on his chances of making an impact this year.
(MerleDixon from PA)
It's important not to put much stock into a 20 PA sample, especially in ST. Rendon should be called up sometime in 2013, but not until the second-half. I wouldn't pay much attention in fantasy leagues. (Paul Singman)
2012-06-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)What quantity and quality of work as the Nationals Manager would be enough to get Davey Johnson into the HOF?
(Paul from DC)
I think a good rule of thumb (that I'm just coming up with now) is that a manager needs two World Series champions with two different nuclei to get serious consideration, and three makes him a lock. Johnson has one, so another one puts him in the discussion. He could use some more longevity, I suppose, but of the three managers above him in wins and the three below him, four are in the Hall. Thirteen of the 19 managers with better winning percentages are in the Hall, and another is Girardi who scarcely counts.

So, somewhat arbitrarily, I'll say: Three playoff appearances, one more ring. (Sam Miller)
2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Danny Espinosa isn't this bad, is he? Should the Nats send him down to AAA until he figures it out, or just stick with him? Or is he not much of a hitter .180/.280/.230 is what we should expect
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Probably not this bad (when someone asks if a player is "this bad" or "this good," the answer is almost always, "no, not this bad/good"), but I don't know if I see rainbows on the horizon, either, and Steve Lombardozzi is lurking. Espinosa has been swinging and missing too much, which he also did in the second half of last season. The problem might be partly one of approach: according to the WaPo's Adam Kilgore, Davey Johnson told Espinosa to "swing easy" this spring, and now he's telling him to be more aggressive. Maybe he's just confused, in which case he'll probably figure it out at some point. Espinosa is a good defender, so if he keeps his average comfortably over the Mendoza Line and hits homers at a good clip for a second-sacker, he'll be worth playing. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-03-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Wither goest the Orioles? Do they appear to at least have a plan?
(rrydelek from Maryland)
As someone who grew up an Orioles fan, it's really hard to watch what's happened to that franchise since Davey Johnson won the Manager of the Year in absentia. I've heard a few times that Angelos is keeping himself further away from the day-to-day operations, which would be nice if true. And they have some talent, but I'm not very optimistic about their chances. Going after Tony LaCava in the off-season showed willingness to get better - but he turned them down! That says a lot right there. And now Dan Duquette is in the role.

Like I said, not feeling too optimistic for Baltimore. (Larry Granillo)
2012-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Davey Johnson told Rendon he will be used at "2b, 3b, and SS" this spring. Any chance he can handle 2B or SS??
(BD from DC)
No idea, ask Kevin. (Jay Jaffe)
2012-02-02 15:00:00 (link to chat)We've heard of the possibilities of Harper breaking camp with the Nats? If so, how long a leash does he have? Projections if he does break camp opening day?
(Chip from LA)
Davey Johnson is on record repeatedly as wanting Harper to go north with the club, but Mike Rizzo is more circumspect, so we'll have to see who wins there. Personally my guess is he'll go back to Triple-A to start the season, but if he does break camp with the club, I expect he'll have a very long leash. Otherwise, why have him there in the first place? Don't forget, he had some initial struggles at both the AA-Eastern League and the AFL, but came on strong, so if he's in the opening day lineup I think the club will be patient with him. (Cory Schwartz)
2011-09-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)With Strasburg back and Zimmerman in the fold am I crazy for thinking that a good lefty bat would make the Nationals contenders next year?
(Steve N from Delaware)
How was the hurricane for you in Delaware? I hear a lot about SC, NY, NJ, VT, but not so much about Delaware... Does your lefty bat mean that Davey Johnson won't be leading off Ian Desmond and his .290 OBP? What's up with that? He used to be such a brilliant manager. Except for that whole letting Dwight Gooden pitch to Mike Scioscia in '88 thing... (Steven Goldman)
2009-08-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)What happened to the young(er) Fred Wilpon that was creative enough to go with a Frank Cashen/Davey Johnson combo to reverse course in Flushing 30 years ago? It seems now all he does is hire whomever happens to be the assistant GM (or some other in-house option) when change is need and a manager with name recognition (Howe/Randolph/Manuel.) I'm never gonna get my Young New School Thinking GM/Manny Acta wish, am I?
(Frank from NJ)
I don't know Wilpon, but my feeling is that he was new to ownership then and more willing to defer to an experienced baseball hand like Cashen, whereas now he's been in the game forever and feels more knowledgeable, plus he's got a kid who grew up in the game and feels he can run the franchise. (Steven Goldman)
2008-12-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Matt Garza had surgery to fix a broken bone in his foot that bothered him for the second half of the year. He is now ineligible for the WBC. What are the odd's Jim Hickey goes around and breaks a foot on of all his pitchers to ensure the same?
(Tommy from Clearwater)
Given how he pitched in the playoffs, I think Garza will be fine, though normal caveats about workload. Interesting point -- will Davey Johnson call Kazmir or Shields? Price? (Will Carroll)
2008-10-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)SG, I thought that Davey Johnson's name being brought up for the Brewers job was interesting, as he was the guy I told Brewers fans they should have had last year. The Brewers are do for a bit of a fall back, likely losing CC and Sheets though, right? (understanding not operating in a vacuum, etc)
(strupp from Madison)
I don't know how well these comebacks work out after such long layoffs -- Johnson hasn't managed in the bigs since 2000 and he'll turn 66 in January. I guess my main touchstone is Earl Weaver in 1985/86, though that team just wasn't going to be turned around, even by Earl is his prime. The Brewers are definitely going to take a hit for being CC and Sheets-free, though they should still be viable. But yeah, Davey would have been a better fit this year. Melvin did a really poor job there, just noticing he had a poor manager with two minutes left on the season clock. (Steven Goldman)
2008-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Joe, why did the Mets just pull a Jays and hire Manuel without a real search? Where was he going to go? Nowhere. They should have tried to poach Acta from the Nats or brought back Davey Johnson.
(Jon from SF)
That's my main criticism of the decision. I just don't get why teams wouldn't go through a full search process for such an important decision. You can search the site--use "Gibbons" as a keyword--for my stuff on this, but basically, keeping the interim manager is a disaster in virtually every case, and the hallmark of bad franchises. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Joe. What should the Yankees do with Derek Jeter? At this point, I'm not sure where his bat plays.
(Joe from Washington, DC)
The window for making Derek Jeter anything but a shortstop closed when Alex Rodriguez was forced to play third base. He'll be a shortstop until he injures himself, his career ends, or he decides it's time to move. Shades of Cal Ripken, but without a guy like Davey Johnson to force the issue. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-05-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)I see no point in the Mets firing Willie if they're just going to hire another "paint by numbers" manager. Any chance Davey Johnson ever manages again? He could probably still get away with employing unconventional (smart) strategies because the Mets fanbase/media would cut him more slack than most cities since he's won here before, no?
(Glenn from NJ)
I see no point in the Mets firing Willie because John McGraw himself couldn't fix what ails the Mets. Wait until the offseason, then evaluate. (Steven Goldman)
2008-03-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why do we live in a world where Dusty Baker and Ed Wade keep getting recycled and Davey Johnson and Paul DePodesta don't?
(George from Texas)
Because your manager and GM are your primary media relations guys and Baker is good at that and DePo maybe isn't (not that the LA media gave him much of a chance - at least that's how it seemed from out here, or maybe I'm just paying too much attention to Plaschke, who seemed to have his little knife out from day one. Interestingly, Wade was not regarded as the most media-savvy guy in Philly, but I think he got the job because he told the Astros what they wanted to hear, that he could turn the franchise around instantly... Davey, I think, decided he wanted to get off the merry-go-round. (Steven Goldman)

2008-10-10 13:30:00Friday LCSGreen ask: " Is it any wonder the USA lost the World Baseball Classic with Buck at the helm? Question -- do we have a manager for the 2009 team?"

Good question. I haven't heard. Davey Johnson? Willie Randolph?

Smart play -- I can't remember seeing a steal with the shift on and it's always made sense to me. (Will Carroll)
