DateQuestionAnswer
2013-07-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Apologize upfront for the long question, but I was watching the Reds lose to the Brewers the other day, when Votto appeared to hit a homer with two outs in the 9th that would have plated the go ahead run. Carlos Gomez robbed him of the homer. I started thinking of WAR and what credit Votto would pick up or lose for the out. This was a great at bat for Votto, but I don't think he gets any credit for it in his WAR tabulation. I'm for WAR, but I think Votto should get rewarded with a positive at bat. Does WAR credit the offensive player for a homer that gets robbed and do you think this may be a weakness of WAR if it doesn't?
(bcat31 from RedBengalland)
WAR/WARP don't, but I don't think we're that far away from having hitting stats that are entirely process based and don't look at "results" at all, sort of FIP for hitters. So in this case, we would know that a ball hit that hard/that location/that trajectory would be an out X percent of the time, a double X percent, a homer X percent, and overall would typically be worth X runs. So Votto would get credit for X runs, regardless of which event actually happened. One issue with this is that Votto isn't defended the same way as, say, Maicer Izturis, so he's more likely to have that ball caught than Izturis would be. But the basic premise -- hitting the ball hard is the hitter's no. 1 responsibility, and what he is most in control of -- seems to have real statistical value, at least in support of the other stats. It's been hinted to me that there is at least one team that already views its hitters through this lens. (Sam Miller)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)For rest of season bench spot (2b/3b/ss) in AL Only, Maicer Izturis or Mike Aviles?
(Brian from Boston)
I'll take Aviles. Nothing special, but offers a bit of everything. (Paul Sporer)
2012-11-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Toronto claims that Maicer Izturis is their starting secondbaseman. Boston has Jonny Gomes and David Nava penciled in their starting outfield. Is there a trend now from sabermetric oriented teams away from young high ceiling players to overachievers?
(John Carter of Hootstown from Toronto by way of Connecticut)
Outstanding question, John Carter of Hootstown! I will focus on Izturis, who I really like because of his intangibles. Has a knack for doing a lot of little things right on a daily basis, extremely good instincts, and he is a terrific hitter in clutch situations with quality at bats. Great selection by the Jays in my opinion, as he is a winning player. Makeup so important, and he, Gomes, and Nava are those types. Their contribution to a club is big picture. Scouting always adds dimensions that cannot be achieved strictly by stats, and that's why smart organizations rely on both to minimize risk and maximize their return. (Dan Evans)
2012-05-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Was there every going to be a place as a utility infielder for Amarista with the Angels? Any opinions on Frieri as well?
(Glenn from Pennsylvania)
Fixed it!

No, no place for Amarista. If everything broke right, he would have ended up being Maicer Izturis, which is actually really useful but things all had to break right for that. Amarista is no loss. I like Roach just fine. The Padres got a good return. The Angels did what they needed to do. Assuming Scioscia likes Frieri, which is always a question. Miss you, Rich Thompson. (Sam Miller)
2011-06-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Some interesting juggling of Howie Kendrick and Maicer Izturis this year by Scioscia. Kendrick, so far, is having his best offensive season. But Izturis, who's been pretty decent himself with the bat this year (119 OPS+), has almost as many starts at second as Kendrick. Is Kendrick that worse a defender than Izturis, or is Scoscia simply playing the lesser defender in LF and 1B to cover up other weaknesses in the Angels lineup?
(Paul from DC)
It's a bit of both. Kendrick isn't Eddie Collins around the bag and Izturis has been an above-average contributor for a middle infielder, so Scioscia has tried to squeeze both into the lineup.

Can't tell you how burned I am by losing all those edits. I may set fire to my own head. (Steven Goldman)
2011-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Steven, With all the buzz about the Mets trading/not trading Reyes, what are the chances that they trade him mid-season and then make a bonafide attempt to sign him in winter? Couldn't that be the best plan to contend from 2012 on? Could you see the Angels parting with Trout for Reyes?
(mattstupp from NYC)
That's the million-dollar question, mattstupp. Given the team's financial problems, that kind of circular deal seems unlikely, plus it would possibly cost them a draft choice if they're not protected. With the Angels having Maicer Izturis and Erick Aybar, I don't see them prioritizing Reyes, nor trading the best or second-best prospect in baseball for a free agent to be. (Steven Goldman)
2009-12-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of the idea of the Angels signing Blalock as a platoon/backup for Wood? He'd come cheap, both have platoon splits, and it gives you two chances to get lucky instead of one, right?
(eneff1 from Berkeley, CA)
Why not just use Maicer Izturis that way? (Joe Sheehan)
2009-10-23 16:00:00 (link to chat)How would you compare these three middle infielders, Maicer Izturis, Erick Aybar and Yunel Escobar? They all had similar years offensively, but I don't know much about their defense or the chance of stardom.
(Wendy from Madrid)
Yunel has the potential to hit 27-32 home runs in a season whereas the other two seem more likely to fall in that .355/.435 range, which is nothing to scoff at, but Yunel certainly has a better chance at becoming an all-star and big bopper than the other two. Defensively, Aybar does a lot right with the glove but makes some mental mistakes that one would hope will gradually cease to occur. I'd order them Escobar, Aybar, Izturis. (Eric Seidman)
2009-10-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Scioscia has now pinch-hit for Mike Napoli twice, once with Sarge Jr. and last night with Maicer Izturis. Sure, Izturis got a sac-fly and eventually Mathis had the walk-off hit, but that still doesn't justify taking the bat out of Napoli's hands in either situation, especially for those two hitters. Why does Scioscia keep doing this?
(ashitaka from long beach, ca)
The Izturis move actually *was* sensible. With one out and a runner on third, contact matters a lot, and with Chamberlain pitching and Izturis available, there was a good matchup to be had.

The repeated use of Matthews for Napoli is just wrong and should be stopped immediately. I can probably come up with degenerate cases where it makes sense, but most of those involve pitchers not in this series. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-10-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)When will Mike Scioscia commit to Howie Kendrick? He is the Dusty Baker of the AL, in love with middling infielders. Good thing Neifi Perez is gone.
(Tom from Chicago)
Problem is that while Kendrick was failing to grab hold of the job, Maicer Izturis became quite a little player, especially from the left side of the plate. I'm not sure I can go after Scioscia for playing Izturis. (Joe Sheehan)
