BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-04-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat! I had high hopes for Brandon Belt and Mike Moustakas at the beginning of the season. Should I finally give up on these two?
(Derek from St. Louis)
Of the two, I had a stronger pull toward the Belt fan club and I'm trying to find an escape route where nobody will notice me slip out the back door of the meeting.

But these things shouldn't be binary yes-no type of things. Every bit of additional information should adjust your expectations, and there's no question that this start lowers mine even if only a bit.

By the way, Giants first base has been a black hole for a decade with the exception of Aubrey Huff's quickly-corrected 2010. (Zachary Levine)
2012-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)How exactly can the Giants legitimately say that Melky Cabrera isn't worthy of a spot on the team when they keep corpses like Aubrey Huff and Guillermo Mota on the roster? Don't you want to put the best roster possible on a World Series roster? While Melky hasn't hit MLB-level pitching in months, Huff hasn't hit it in years.
(jlarsen from chicago)
I thought the Melky decision was staggeringly wrong when it was originally made. Then I saw Mike Ferrin's piece on players coming back from long layoffs.

http://bit.ly/RralCb

I was shocked by the results, to be honest. Add in the inability to play high-level rehab games and you could argue Melky would be even worse off (though perhaps the lack of an injury would lead you to argue he'd be better off). Regardless, I think it's fair for the Giants to conclude that he's probably not better than Blanco. As for being better than Huff: Yeah, definitely. No doubt better than Huff. But if those are the stakes we're talking about (25th man, last guy on the bench) then it's harder to get too excised about it and it's easier to appreciate that they wouldn't want all the disruption just for a 25th man. Basically: Cabrera would have made them a bit better and that's what I'd have done; but probably barely, and I'm willing to defer to the guys in the room on this one. (Sam Miller)
2012-03-08 15:00:00 (link to chat)What has to happen for me to see some significant time in San Francisco this year? What about my good pal Domonic in Philly?
(Brandon Belt from Fresno)
There are few things I'd love to see more as a Giants fan, but the way the offseason went, the deck seems to be stacked against Belt again. He certainly needs a strong spring, and ideally a poor one from Aubrey Huff or Nate Schierholtz, but an injury might be the only route to an everyday job unless Bochy's preference for veterans changes. I'm anxious to see what adjustments Belt has made to his two-strike approach, as well.

For Brown, I think a trade is his only sure route to significant playing time this year. (Daniel Rathman)
2011-08-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)As a Giants fan how much should I be panicking right now? Not that the Giants will lose, but that lightning will strike every player other than Aubrey Huff.
(Beau from San Francisco)
World Champions. How can you panic after winning a World Series? They could lose every game for the next eleven years and your life would still be better than it was this time a year ago.

That said: Yeah. The best thing you can say about the Giants right now is that they only have to worry about the Diamondbacks. And I think Mark DeRosa is healthy. Is Mark DeRosa healthy? Can we confirm Mark DeRosa's health? (Sam Miller)
2011-05-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)I am trippin out right now about the Buster Posey situation. Are the Giants in serious trouble? Should Buster be converted to another position? He was a shortstop as a freshman at FSU I believe. Why limit him to first base where Aubrey Huff is holding it down. I think because Buster is more athletic than the prototypical cathcer he just goes to hard behind the plate.
(Aceball from Reno)
Posey is more athletic than a lot of catchers and yes he did play some shortstop for the Seminoles--he also appeared at every other position during one game. Should they move him away from catching? That's hard for me to say. They knew the risks associated with catching--not just the play at the plate aspect either--and figured he was best served there, so should an incident like this change their outlook? I don't know. Maybe. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-03-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Brandon Belt staying at 1B or going to the outfield?
(Bryan from Illinois)
Belt's position might ultimately be determined this year by where there's an immediate opening. So I guess it depends on whether you feel Aubrey Huff or Pat Burrell has a better chance of collapsing. (Jeremy Greenhouse)
2011-03-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Will Pat Burrell keep the everyday OF position with San Fran or does he get bumped by Aubrey Huff when Brandon Belt gets called up?
(bfitzge3 from Upstate NY)
The Giants have a ton of OF options, few of them great, so it depends who hits... Burrell, Ross, Rowand, Torres, maybe Huff... they'll all have to battle for playing time. And don't forget that Mark DeRosa is trying to come back, too. It's a crowded picture. (Cory Schwartz)
2011-02-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which Aubrey Huff do we get this year?
(Rob from Alaska)
The one who falls somewhere in between the 2009 Orioles model and the 2010 World Champion edition. (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances Aubrey Huff repeats last years numbers?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Maybe not an exact repeat, but if he keeps his more patient approach and waits for pitches he can demolish, there really is no reason he can't come close. (Marc Normandin)
2010-11-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why do so many people complain about the WS winner because they weren't built to last? Why should that matter? They have a shiny new flag and you don't. Too many screeds are written with the downside of the Giants as the main points, instead of a great late-season and post-season run. The fact that we shouldn't expect a repeat next year should be a postscript at most, no? In other words, don't forget to celebrate the baseball before you skewer the managerial approach. Am I wrong?
(R.A.Wagman from @RAWagman)
I completely agree. If there was such a thing as Marlins fans I would pose the question of whether they cried over the fact that the team couldn't compete in 1998 after winning it all in 1997, or if they basked in the warm glowing warming glow of a world series title. I think a lot of this stems from the fact that people don't like certain teams to have the upper hand on theirs, or because certain people don't agree with the style of the Giants club. I know a lot of people like to make fun of Brian Sabean and so the initial reaction is to detract from him instead of giving the Giants credit. I also think people just have a hard time believing how a team with Aubrey Huff, Cody Ross, Freddy Sanchez, et al, managed to win a world series, so the kneejerk reaction is to say "But you won't do it again!"

As I said earlier, the story here should be how dominant that entire pitching staff looked. The Giants will not score a lot of runs over the next couple of years, but that is the best 5-man starting rotation in baseball. (Eric Seidman)
2010-10-12 12:00:00 (link to chat)Aubrey Huff - Will he repeat this years production or be reclaimed by last years abyss?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
I love these questions, because the answer is almost always "somewhere in the middle." A weighted average of his 2008-10 performance suggests .280/.350/.480. Take away some points for aging and he's still a useful offensive player. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Fascinating piece by Seidman today. How do you think the Big Puma would look at Wrigley next year? I don't think they'll shell out the money for Dunn.
(Matt from Chicago)
Aye, it was indeed. I'd certainly rather see the Cubs potentially buy low on Berkman (or Carlos Pena) than chase Aubrey Huff or Adam LaRoche, or settle for the likes of Lyle Overbay. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-08-02 13:30:00 (link to chat)Hi Christina, thanks for the chat. Aubrey Huff has been pretty ridiculous this year (.309/.397/.550) putting up numbers even better than his stellar 2008 (.304/.360/.552). However, it's hard to forget his putrid 2009 (.241/.310/.384). How do you think he will perform over the next couple of years? Do you think he re-signs with the Giants or go back to the AL this off-season?
(DS from LA)
He might well welcome an invitation to come back, and certainly if he'd settle for an expensive one-year deal it wouldn't be so terrible for the Giants, because of his past history that would certainly be better than handing him a multi-year deal of anything but the lowest terms, say a one-and-option deal with compensation not much above what he's making now.

OK, a few quick-fire questions, and then I have to ditch... (Christina Kahrl)
2010-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Christina, with the A's sweep of the Giants, where does this leave both teams? Certainly, the Giants pitched well enough to win two of the three, but obviously, when you can only muster a single run over three games, it makes their laughable offense seem all the more hilarious.
(TLivingston from Tampa Bay)
The problem with the Giants is Brian Sabean's ongoing disconnect between the quality of the performances and the reputation of the performers. He's signed all these former All-Stars! Runs will ensue! Surely they must! That's a lot of money, so surely they surely must, surely! Ooops. I wonder if there isn't something in the water. Aubrey Huff offering to play left so that Buster Posey can play... first base? It's like having how an offense scores runs explained by creationists. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Johnny Damon's continued non-employment surprise you?
(ekanenh from capitol city)
Not too much. Every market has losers, and he's one of them in that there were only so many people who were going to get in on Holliday and Bay and decide to see Damon as a viable fall-back option. It would have been neat if he'd been a one-year addition for the Giants instead of their signing Freddy Sanchez and Aubrey Huff, but one of the problems with being a historical actor is that you sometimes lose out because of historical actions. Damon seemed to keep waiting for a deal that wasn't there, and other teams, players, and agents weren't waiting on him. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-14 16:00:00 (link to chat)Nothing lasts forever? Look no further than my career. Thoughts on the Giants off-season moves?
(Axel Rose from Cold November Rain)
(Tries to think of clever linkage between GNR's "comeback" and the Giants. Not working.) Pablo Sandoval, Travis Ishikawa, Aubrey Huff, Mark DeRosa. They will all play where? I'm scratching my head. (Russell A. Carleton)
2009-10-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Are we any closer to getting your picks for surprise stars from each of the playoff teams?
(Frank Costanza from Queens)
It's like asking me eight questions at once. Not easy. Brett Gardner. Billy Wagner. Aubrey Huff. Erick Aybar. Chan Ho Park. Colby Rasmus. Hong-Chih Kuo. Dexter Fowler. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-08-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jason Beck reporting that the Tigers just acquired Aubrey Huff from the Os for a minor leaguer. What say you?
(don from lansing)
I say I'm really digging the brinksmanship going on in the AL Central. And also, you can never have too many quality bats. (Ken Funck)
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Fernando Martinez for Aubrey Huff and George Sherrill? The Mets seem to be built to win-now, and adding a legit bopper to a struggling lineup AND a solid lefty to bolster a suddenly-struggling Putz would make sense.
(Silv from NY, NY)
The Mets wouldn't trade Martinez for Johan Santana, so I'm going to say that they probably won't for a patch at first base and a mediocre lefthanded reliever. Andy, you have to disguise these better than that. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-12-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)Season's Greetings Christina! How many games do you think Matt Wieters will catch this year over/under 120 and what kind of numbers should we expect?
(Shane from Miami)
I'm bet on 100 or so, with a good number of starts at DH to let Aubrey Huff do some damage in the field and continue to be something beyond just a DH. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-09-23 13:30:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. What do you think of Aubrey Huff going forward? And is Nick Markakis already the best RF in the American League?
(Brendan from Bainbridge)
I wouldn't want to make a long-term commitment to Huff, and while he has had a great season, the Orioles really should look to leverage that in the trade market. He'll never have more value than this, and he's not a part of their future.

Markakis is a total stud, the best RF in the league. He's underappreciated, kind of the AL East version of Grady Sizemore. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Orioles are hitting .311/.372/.511 in the 30 games since the All-Star break and are now 3rd in the AL in runs behind Texas and Boston. Should they sign a few big pitchers next season and make a push, or is this season's offense just a collection of career years?
(Steve from Baltimore)
The latter. There's some good players here--Nick Markakis, Brian Roberts, Adam Jones (now hurt)--but the recent push is about guys like Aubrey Huff and Melvin Mora, who have no future here. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-08-15 15:00:00 (link to chat)Am I the only person that is surprised that Aubrey Huff was not claimed on waivers? He is a solid hitter and it seems like some team in need of a bat down the stretch would at least make a play for him. Any thoughts?
(mymrbig from New Orleans)
I'm not that surprised, because nobody's probably all that excited about taking on Huff's $9 million salary for next season. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Will, realistically, who gets traded from the orioles in the next couple of days?
(Jerry from Annapolis)
I'm surprised there's been no mention of Aubrey Huff. Maybe one of their relievers. I dont see much action there since this looks like a 500 team and there's some value in 500 for the O's. (Will Carroll)
2008-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)A lot of people in my office tell me that I should get some guy named Beltre for some of my young pitching.... should I listen to them?
(Bill Smith from Minneapolis, MI)
Some, but I wouldn't go nuts. Maybe the Orioles would give you Aubrey Huff for a lot less. Maybe you get Kevin Kouzmanoff for less, and still get the righty slugger you need for less. (Christina Kahrl)
