2009 Hirsh seemed to be hitting his stride in 2007 before breaking his leg, but 2008 proved to be a major step backwards, as a strained shoulder in spring training turned into an endless bout of soreness that kept him on the shelf almost until June, and in Colorado Springs until rosters expanded. Despite early problems with his command, his velocity was nearly all the way back, so at least there's that bit of good news. The rotation's a bit of a blur, but he's in the edges of the picture.
2008 Hirsh is built a bit like Jason Jennings, for whom he was acquired from the Astros. The key difference between the two isn't physical, but aerial; Hirsh is a fly-ball pitcher (career 0.60 G/F), whereas Jennings is a groundball pitcher (career 1.42 G/F). That makes a big difference in a place like Coors Field. Hirsh missed six weeks of 2007 with a broken right fibula suffered when J.J. Hardy lined a ball off his shin. He's expected to be healthy and back in the rotation by spring training.
2007 If the Astros had a young hurler who established himself as something more than back-of-the-rotation filler, it was Hirsh. He dominated the PCL and acquitted himself reasonably well when forced up to the big club to aid their late-season surge, running off four straight quality starts at one point. Although he also took his lumps in the Show, his lower home run rate in Triple-A is something you like to see from somebody who will have to pitch in a bandbox. Likely because of that, the Rockies coveted him and got him in the Jennings deal. With his height, you might think he`s an intimidator on the mound, but he`s more of a polished sinker-slider type than an imposing figure. The takeaway from his projection is that he can win enough battles at home plate to minimize the damage; if he gives up fewer cookies than he did in Houston, he`ll be a solid replacement for Jennings.
2006 A 2nd-round pick in 2003, Hirsh`s weak strikeout and walk rates in 2004 were good enough to knock him way down on most prospect lists. Then he dominated the Texas League, which in this system makes him one of the few living, breathing prospects. A tall righty who works the angles, Hirsh doesn`t have overwhelming velocity. His command is solid for his size and experience, and scouts like his makeup. In a system this bereft of minor league talent, Hirsh is worth watching.
