2013 The story of Hendriks's career so far: He started 18 games before picking up his first win, last September 19. It's been an exceptionally tough big-league road for Hendriks, who has given up about a homer and two-thirds per nine MLB innings. But he's only 23 and has a long, solid record in the minor leagues, where home runs have never been a problem, so he'll get plenty of chances to earn a rotation spot in 2013. Hendriks is already fifth all-time among Australian-born pitchers in games started, and could move up to second with a full year's worth this season.
2012 Renowned for his outstanding command, this Perth, Australia native has put up impressive strikeout-to-walk ratios at virtually every stop since signing with the Twins in 2007, but he's a pitcher whose stats are ahead of his scouting reports. He's got an array of pitches—a fastball he throws anywhere from 88 to 93 miles per hour, curve, slider, changeup—but none of his pitches are to be feared. The combination plays up thanks to his ability to mix pitches and locate. In other words, he's a prototypical Twins pitching prospect. After climbing through Double-A and Triple-A—with a stop at the Futures Game—he got a look with the Twins at the end of the season, but was knocked around. A bit of misfortune on the balls in play and flyball fronts fluffed up his ERA.
2011 No team is busier in Australia than the Twins, and Hendriks is their big prize. He has an array of pitches, a two-seam fastball, a four-seamer, a slider, and a change. The fastball is just average, the slider and the change very good, but what makes him special is his supernatural command. He just missed leading the minor leagues in ERA last season; his 1.74 mark was a shade worse than the 1.73 mustered by Braves prospect Brandon Beachy. Given organizational taste, Hendriks is the perfect Twins pitching prospect and could come quickly.
